Wasn't Veritas supposed to focus more on the mythology and not the relationships so much?
Guess they had to get rid of Lana somehow for the next 5 episodes.

he didnt want to see her messed up eyes because they were so shocking and disturbing, and since lana knows whats going on he didn't want her to see him crying.

I think it was symbolic of the end.
OTH, Clark could have mistaken the cataracts for extremely dry eyes. After all, he is the BDA.
AndiGirl
03-27-2008, 10:04 PM
Either it was symbolic that it's the end....like Jack said, or it's Clark trying to maintain some of his dignity. He knows Lana can see him and hear him, she just cant vocalize that. So he probably doesnt want her to sit there and watch him break down...so he closes her eyes?
MrZeppo
03-27-2008, 10:05 PM
I think he was just so disturbed, and looking into her cloudy eyes reminded him of his failure to protect her.

Most all people die with their mouths and eyes open and people usually close the latter. In this sense, he didn't like the idea of her being unable to control her body and could not stand the blank stare. Better that her eyes be protected by closed lids.

I'd like to think it's symbolic too, but I don;t know. Anyway, I thought it was just funny.........she looked like gollum!!

If I had a friend who was in a trance like coma and his/her eyes were involuntarily plastered open, it would be my natural response to close them too. Keeping human eyes open for a long time will do serious damage to them.
I think that there was symbolism too cause we all know how tptb love that stuff.
AndiGirl
03-27-2008, 10:18 PM
I agree with all of it really. I think Clark wanted to protect her eyes, they were disturbing him, and he didnt want her to have to watch him break down. It all sounds about right. i dont think her being creepy was the reason...

I'm sure it was hard for Clark to see her like that, but I also think Braniac could see thru her eyes and that's why he addressed Kal-EL. I'm glad to know Braniac can reverse it. Glad Chloe is there for Clark.

Just incase her eyes started showing the kryptonian letters like Lionel's eyes did in "Commencement". Clark wouldn't want Lex to see that...On the off chance Lex would ever see how she's doing

The eyes were creepy, but I commend KK for great acting. Especially when she whispered, "'Kal El, you're too late".
Do you think Lex will find out and takes her into some secret lab to experiment on?

With her eyes being messed up, he closesd them, out of respect to her. In the same way, people close the eyes of the deceased, to show them in a peaceful state.
MidgardDragon
03-27-2008, 10:56 PM
None of the above. Because Clark didn't want to see someone he loved with their eyes all glazed over like that. I also agree with the respect angle. I think he did it both for himself and for her.

I thought more of how a blind person wears dark glasses to cover their eyes because they look so different. But I like some of the ideas here so much better. Maybe tptb will let us know. Nahhhhhhhh....

:rotfl:I wanted to vote symbolic...but I don't know how it can be symbolic if Clana are going to go have a pancake breakfast with benefits when this coma in offscreenville arc is done. Which I guess we don't know yet how it'll fare for Clark but I want to be cautiously optimistic.

Wow. I cannot believe some of you found that funny.
IMO it was a very painfully sad scene. Of course Clark closed Lana's eyes because he couldn't bear to see Brainiac's oracle (invisibly but deeply suffering) staring through Lana's eyes.
Yes, maybe symbolism for Clana's end. Clark, understandably, took her suffering very hard. More symbolic to me was seeing that angel statue in the distance --> bringing us full circle from Clana's beginning, among the marble angels, in the SV cemetery. Man, that relationship was doomed from the start. *sad smile* Who starts romance in a cemetary? *chuckles* Ah, foolish youth...
Btw, I really hope that TPTB resolve Clana further before its official end. I know we've all been waiting for Clana to end already for like 5 seasons but as a result I actually really expect a lot out of the eventual breakup. I need there to be full closure. Yes Clark has realized that maybe they're too different. yes Clark has realized that all he does is hurt Lana, indirectly and directly (vice versa as well). But they still need to be friends and at peace. Let the angsty relationship die but Clana friendship prosper. That's my motto, anyway.

Yes, IMO, that was Brainiac speaking to him, not Lana.
Respect, symbolic of endings, and also possibility of BrainIAC being able to see thru her eyes, and not wanting Lana to see him breakdown, but she can still hear him, though.
I think, maybe he didn't want Brainiac to see him like that, as Brainiac told him, that he has control of her body. So closing her eyes, IMO, also closed Brainiac's "eyes" as well as Lana's.
Clark surely didn't want her to see him so sad and hopeless either. Normally you try to behave in a optimistic way when you're around someone, who's sick and in hospital, in order to give him strength and hope for a soon recovery.
But in this case and in that moment, Clark wasn't able to give her that hope, because he hadn't any either.
So better let both of them , Lana AND Brainiac, not see him like that.

Well I must have seen that part wrong because I thought she was dead when she said, " Kal -El....It's too late." And then Clark closed her eyes and him and Chloe started crying so that's what I thought.

Yes, rewatch it. She's not dead. Brainiay told Clark, that he has the control over Lana's body and mind and that only he can totally reverse it.
Clark was so sad, because he obviously felt sorry for her and as usual guilty and because he doesn't know yet how to help her and Chloe cried, because she felt sorry for both of them.

Why's everyone saying symbolic. He closed her eyes out of respect. The same reason people close the eyes of the deceased.

03-28-2008, 06:21 AM
I think there are a number of reasons for doing it.
One; respect, as said by others on here, its what you do to those who have recently passed away.
Two; Brainiac is channeling through Lanas mind, yet Lana can still see Clark. I don't think he wanted her to see him break down like he did. He obviously felt guilty, and couldn't bear for her to see him.
Three; Her eyes were, freaky. Lets just admit that. I think if anything, Clark had to close them, they made her look evil, not at all like Lana. Yes, go on, everyone say Lanas already evil :\ But i mean, she didn't look like Lana to Clark.

i think he closed her eyes just because you can't leave someone with eyes opened for a long period of time. closing the eyes allows the eyes to not dry out.
i mean you can't stare forever with out blinking.
but the other reason, he could stand looking at her and his defeat.
brainiac hit clark where he lived .....lana... and clark can't beat brainiac alone.
its like looking at your worst nightmare, closing her eyes somehow, allows less pain when clark looks at her.
plus those white eyes are creepy.

But Lana didn't pass away, so that's not the reason, I think.
Brainiac can control her motor skills, her breathing and he can speak through her - what he did already, when she said "it's too late, Kal-El" - but I was wrong when I said, he might be able to see through her eyes as well, sorry.
So, when Clark closed her eyes, then he most obviously didn't want Lana seeing him like that, sad and hopeless, without any clue, what to do next and with the fear in his mind, that Brainiac can make her stop breathing any time he wants to.
In that case it's better that she can only feel his hands holding hers than to see his sad face.

I think it was a way for Clark to make Lana look at peace. From what Brainiac said to him, Lana was in extreme pain from what he did to her, she just could convey the emtion becuase of what he did to her. He was in so much pain seeing her that way, it made her look more at peace almost as if she were sleeping.

It is true that Lana has not died, which is when and why most people close the eyes of the deceased, but an unblinking stare is harmful to the eyes since the eyelids protects the eye. In that sense, ClarkMan is yet again doing a good deed to protect Lana's eyes whether he thought about it that way or not.
