You trusted us to protect him

I was struck by this line. We all know Superman is our protector. But that Clark is reluctant to take on this mantle of responsibility. He's still trying to wiggle his way out of it. Though things may be changing. Many want to see him take up his training. Some have speculated that maybe it will be Chloe's death that will propel him forward. And I know some object to this as a motivation for Clark. So I was wondering what would motivate Clark to finally take up his training?

And this line "You trusted us to protect him" seems to me is what TPTB may use. The protected finally becomes the protector. What do you think?

Clark protects us (or right now those he loves and those near him, at least) every day of his life on the show. It's not a matter of him not protecting and becoming the protector, he already is. His training is just something that they presented and the fans have clamored for, but I really feel like it's almost unneeded at this point, and see no reason to force it on him anymore. At this point the "training" seems to be just an end-of-series arrangement.

Perhaps it will lead him to large revelations that will allow him to fight whatever threat they have in the final episode. But it's not about him not protecting people, he already does and we see it in every episode.
