I think he always had a good side to him, and I don't think he'll ever lose it.

I think Lionel is good compared to what he was before. He was downright despicable. Now he mostly tries to have a good outcome, but is still willing to use dubious means to get there. Lionel has kept things from Clark before when he thought it would hurt him physically or mentally. He never mentioned that Lana was behind his capture until he felt he had to say something to Clark. I think he was trying to make up to Lana, because of him forcing her to marry Lex.

Lionel has a "ends justify the means" mentality that Clark can not accept. Lionel has a twisted sense of justice. But I still think he has good in him, we just don't know the whole story yet, and neither does Clark. While I think there is good in Lionel, it will never be as good as the good in Clark.

Exactly! Like Clark told Kara when she told him how Lionel and Lex at different times helped them out when they were in danger and Clark said something like Lex and Lionel will only help if it benefits them.

I still think there is good in him, and it has in many ways been realized in him. There is no other way that anything makes sense

I think it more dementia than anything else. He's gone from evil to good then back to evil and then posessed by AI Jor-El it's a wonder he can think straight enough to pour a glass of wine without spilling it.

The Marian Manhunter confirmed that Lionel is on Clarks side, but I think there will always be a side to Lionel that likes to play dirty. Like the way he tried to blackmail Lana into marrying Lex. It could have been handled much better, but I think Lionel used the control to get his fix. He and Lex are like junkies and need thier fix. Lionel is trying to have his cake and eat it too. If there wasn't evil in him he wouldn't have let Pierce torture Clark, but it there wasn't good in him he wouldn't have told Pierce to return Clark to his home. Lionel is both sides of the coin.
