Chapter 1: Destiny
Six Years Ago…
Darkness was looming over the Kent Farm as it sits quietly in Smallville, Kansas. Within the farm a large built man with a red shirt and worn blue jeans sat looking over large amounts of cluttered papers. He quickly turned around when he heard footsteps coming up the stairs of his fortress of solitude.
The girl was a vision of beauty as she walks closer towards him. She flashed him a warm smile and his heart quickly melts away. In her hand she held a small birthday cake, homemade, with eighteen lighted candles.
“Happy 18th Birthday, Clark” she said smiling as she puts down the cake on the desk next to the papers.
“You remembered?” Clark muttered. He puts down all of the papers in is hands and quickly covers them up. “Thank you, Lana.” He said with a charming Kent smile.
“Well, what kind of girlfriend would I be if I forgot?” she asked jokingly. “Come on, it’s almost midnight. Make a wish.”
Clark purposely ignores her request and walks her over towards the window of his fortress. “Lana, ever since I met you, every birthday I only ever had one wish and now I already have what I always wanted. I don’t need anything else.” He looks straight into her beautiful hazel eyes.
Her heart was beating faster and faster with ever word he speaks to her. They were eighteen and very much in love. She leans in slowly to kiss him.
The kiss was full of passion as he pulls in closer to him. Her hand unknowingly finds its way to his curly hair. The kiss continued until she broke the kiss yearning for air. “Wow” was all that she could say.
The next morning he stepped downstairs to see his parents sitting at the table. “Did somebody die Dad?” Clarks asks jokingly with a smile.
“Son, what happened last night with you and Lana?” his father asks in a serious voice. “I know that you are eighteen now, and you have the freedom to do whatever you want, but not under my roof.”
“Dad, nothing happened between us.” Clark replied taking a bit out of his toast.
“We know that you are a very responsible young man Clark, but we also know how much you and Lana love each other. We just don’t want you guys to do something you’ll later regret.” His mother added.
“I know mom. You guys don’t have to worry; Lana and I won’t do anything until we are both fully ready. Besides, she’s going to Metropolis University and I’m going to Central Kansas. We won’t get to see each other that much once summer is over.”
“What about Jor-El’s warnings, Clark?” Jonathan asked, worried about his son’s future now more than ever. “You can’t keep ignoring them.”
“I’m going to the fortress to make sure what he wants me to do.” Clark answered them.
************************** The Fortress *****************************
“Kal-El, my son, are you prepared to begin your training?” His father’s dark voice looms over the crystal white fortress.
“No! I’m not leaving my family!” Clark yells back to him.
“I know how much you love your family, Kal-El. But your training cannot wait. You are now eighteen in human years. It is time for you to embrace your true destiny.”
“I’m not going to abandon my parents, Lana, and my friends. I love them! My destiny is to be with them! This is my choice.” Clark angrily answers back.
“You must sacrifice your love for them in order to become the savior of this world. This world, its people, they need you to become their greatest hero.” Jor-El responded.
“I can continue to save the people here. No matter what you say Jor-El, I am NOT leaving them.” Clark turns around to leave.
“THIS IS NOT YOUR CHOICE! I cannot let you throw away your destiny. Heed my warning Kal-El. The life of those you hold most dear will be in danger if you do not begin your training!” Jor-El’s voice echoed around the entire fortress.
“NO! I will ALWAYS be there to protect them!” Clark yells back before departing the fortress.
************************** Smallville High **************************
The last bell of the day rang for the last time for the graduating seniors. They rush out of the hallways throwing papers into the air without care. Some were yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs, some saying their final goodbyes, and some in tears as they desperately try to hold on the people they love most.
Clark, Lana, Chloe and Pete finished saying goodbye to all of their friends and teachers before they prance out of Smallville High’s double doors.
“Can you believe it’s finally over?” Pete Ross asked them. “No more essays, no more tests, NO MORE SCHOOL! WHOOOOOO!”
“Yeah…it’s finally hit me. This is it; we can do whatever we want now. I mean we can go sky diving, bungee jumping, anything!” Chloe replied.
“But suddenly all of those tests and projects don’t seem as scary as the big question mark out there. What are we going to do now that no one is telling us what we have to do? I mean how do we know we know we know what is the right thing to do? How do we know that we choose to do is our destiny?” Lana asks as the four continue walking.
“I think we should just do whatever we want, destiny is just another word for not having a choice.” Clark answered them. “Besides, the only thing I want to do is be with be with you.” Clark said catching Lana’s eyes, while Pete and Chloe’s roll 360 degrees.
“Come on Chloe; let’s leave these two lovebirds so they could have their own undisturbed moments.” Pete said teasing them.
“Yeah, we don’t want to be the reason they’re not kissing or anything.” Chloe emphasized seeing that Clark and Lana have already begun their long make out session.
Both Clark and Lana use their unneeded hand to wave goodbye to Pete and Chloe without bothering to look at them. But Pete and Chloe were used to it by now.
************************ Smallville Hospital ****************************
“Pick up Clark, pick up.” The worried voice was waiting for Clark to pick up his cell phone.
“Hi Chloe!” Clark’s voice answered with excitement over the phone.
“Clark! You have to get to the hospital immediately! Your Mom and Dad have just been in a car accident!” Chloe replied quickly.
Clark dropped the phone. He super speeded into the hospital entrance to see Chloe in the waiting room.
“WHAT HAPPENED?” Clark’s voice yelled full of terror. His heart was beating faster than ever.
Chloe quickly walks up to him. “Whoa? How did you get here so--? Never mind, your parents were driving down Route 43 on Loeb Bridge when this bus hit them. Your mom has a major concussion, a broken arm, and a few nasty bruises, but your dad is still in major surgery. The doctors won’t tell me anything else and they won’t let me in either.” Her voice was full of sadness and looking at his scared face didn’t make it any better.
Clark immediately runs up to the nearest doctor he could find with Chloe following close behind. “I need to see Martha and Jonathan Kent.” Clark plainly states to the old doctor.
“I’m sorry I can’t allow you to see them right now.”
“I’M THEIR SON! I’M NEED TO SEE MY PARENTS RIGHT NOW!” Clark pushes the doctor out of the way and proceeds towards the doors labeled “Doctors Only.” Before he could open the door he was stopped by four other doctors.
“Sir, I know you must be very upset right now, but I can’t allow you through those doors. The doctor is operating right now on your father. Your mom is down the hall, I think she is awake now. You can go see her.” One of the doctors walks Chloe and him to Martha’s room.
“Clark!” Martha calls out holding up her hands to hug him. He rushes over, holding her tight into his strong arms, like he would never let her go again.
The door opens again with Lana and Pete walking in. Martha immediately explained to them what happened and how it happened. Once she finished they sat quietly, nervously waiting for the doctors to come out of surgery.
Four hours later Lex Luther rushes in to see Martha badly hurt on the bed, Chloe and Pete sitting next to each other, and Lana holding Clark’s hands trying to comfort him.
“Clark, I just heard. Are your parents alright?” Lex asked inching closer towards him and Lana.
“My mom’s going to be okay, but my dad is still in surgery.” Clark answers him in a hush tone.
Everyone’s attention immediately turns towards the doctor who just walked in. “My name is Dr. Burke; I was the doctor who performed surgery on Jonathan Kent.” His face was full of regret and he avoided direct eye contact with them.
“How is he?” Martha asks afraid to hear the answer.
“There were some complication with his heart and I did everything that I could, but I couldn’t save him.” The doctor quickly spoke before he closed his eyes.
