Why did Lionel build a facility that could hold Clark?

He said it was for other, evil Kryptonians.

he never counted on kara.

That is what he said. It may be true. It may be that, while he still has changed, he is still a Luthor and would like to have a safety net and defense against Clark if he ever needs it.

yea, but the question is why did lionel order clark to be in the holding cell?

So that he could hand her over to Patricia without him just super-speeding away. And so that he could bring him into the situation without him rushing off to try and deal with an enemy he knew nothing about (Lionel even stated this one very clearly).

Lionel built the cage because he knew of the other "Travelers". You know, the ones that came out of the space ship durring the last meteor shower.
He used Clark as a pawn to get the information from Patricia Swann that would incrimidate him in the murders of the other members of Veritas. He was just using Clark, he didn't intend to harm him.

cool, thank you to the above 2Maybe I spoke too soon. It is now understood that Lionel started to build the cage before the arrival of the other Kryptonians. So who was Lionel talking about if not the Kryptonian's we've seen? Lionel started to build the cage after he knew about Clark's secret.
Then I was thinking - Clark was kidnaped before P. Swann said she had information about Lionel - that could bring him down. So again, Lionel kidnaped Clark before there was a threat made by someone else.
It might just be bad writting. I don't know.
Maybe someone else can clear it up. Sorry.

I believe he had it built in case he ever needed it for Clark.

because he has to look out for himself, he doesnt trust anyone... i'd be surprised if he didnt keep some small peice of meteor rock wrapped in lead cloth or something on his person at all times... maybe a needle hidden in his sock LOL

I agree. I think he lied to Clark. I think he just made that claim to make it seem like it wasn't meant to hold Clark.

My thing is: how could Lionel REALLY create the facility for other Kryptonians? Despite being the emissary for Jor-El, he couldn't have known what Milton Fine was planning in imprisoning Clark in the Phantom Zone, which of course set the course for the release of the Phantoms. If he had, he would have been more prepared for Gloria, Baern, Aldar, Titan, etc. He had no clue that anybody else would come. He was just trying to make Clark believe that the cell wasn't intended for him.

Did you notice that Lionel tried to blame Kara for Clark's disappearance. I really think Lionel wasn't planning on Kara getting in his way and hasn't liked her and that is why he didn't want her to get her memory back. He clearly kidnapped Clark just after Kara moved in with Lex meaning he had to act fast, because he knew Clark would be taking Kara to get her powers and wanted him before that happened.

Ooo good point. Definitely not a coincidence that Lionel goes in for the imprisonment of Clark while Kara has moved in with Lex and lost her powers... that, and the letters that he has been getting from "V" most of all. I still want to know exactly why Lionel wants Clark all to himself though. I think it's more than Lionel wanting to use Clark's powers for is own personal gain... I think it actually has something to do with protecting Clark from others in his own twisted way.
