Definitely putting on the lbs (pounds) if you ask me. I would say age & wealth are against him. He's obviously eating better and the older you get the less exercise you do and, besides, the older you get the more your metabolism slows down. Just look at how your folks aged. Unless you've got those kind of parents that have to eat junk or they lose weight, you're going to get larger the older you get. Plus, after you're married a few years, you tend not to worry about looks so much.

TW looked the most jacked/ripped in Exile during S3. As others have said, I think age is becoming a factor. What I find funny is the fact that Sam Jones III still looks exactly the same, and TW seems to look older with each passing season. TW is a good looking guy and everything, but his age is definately showing. If he was doing a regular drama that had a 30 something cast, he would fit in. But the guy is coming up on his 31st birthday and Christopher Reeve was 26 when the first Superman film came out. The fact is that the show was never supposed to last this long, and the longer they stretch it out, the more out of place TW seems to be age wise. I mean, does anyone think that TW sucessfully passes for a 21/22 year old?

Here's my thoughts. He's definitely bigger than he was in past seasons although he DOES have more muscle mass but isn't as toned or ripped as he use to be and that's understandable for age. Seasons 1-3 he was very ripped but pretty lean. Season 4 he was still pretty toned but not as much but did packed on some additional muscle. Season 5 he was a lot bigger but some chubbiness came with it. Season 6 he was big but shed some of that fat. Season 7 he's BIG and starting to get toned again. Yes he is getting to be Superman-like and that's good.
FYI I'm straight not gay (not that there's a problem with that :)), I'm just enthusiastic when it comes to healthy bodies for men and women. Ex: Erica Durance & Laura Vandervoort=WOW! :D

Brad pitt was at least 5 or 6 years older when he filmed Fight Club (heck for argument`s sake lets say they were the same age) so I think age has nothing to do at least not untill 15 more years or so, also if my memory serves me right, stallone was about 39 when he filmed Rocky IV and he was fit as can be.

I totally agree, Dor el :) and yes, lighting is also very important and I thought the same as you concerning that scene.

Didn't say Tom in an interview (I can't remember which it was), that he has barely time for his workouts? He shoots 12-16 hours a day, then he has a family, a wife etc. and I assume, that he wants to rest as well a little - well, not so much time left for extensive workouts.
I guess it's a really tough job to be an actor.

As each season has gone by he has gotten a man's BODY ..tones with muscles and "everything" has filled out nicely. Remember that TV does add pounds too..He is a tall man with an excellent physique. For those people that think he looks stocky or fat maybe you should look at the candid shots of him a few weeks ago in Cali...people were saying he looks too slim in those pics..and unless he ate some of that Stride gum that Pete had ..I don't think he can stretch his body to change his look from big to slim that quickly. About the age thing, around 30-35 is a big adjustment for a lot of guys as far as weight goes. After that, it seems it takes a lot more consciousness to look lean. My hubby was always long and lean until that time....but maybe it's my cooking?

TW looks just as awesome as ever! Besides he's not that old. Granted I don't really think he ever passed for a high school/college student, but really what high schooler looks like that? None that I remember. :p I don't think it has anything to do with age. I believe Dean Cain was about his age during his run on Lois & Clark and he had no problem staying buff for the part.

Putting on weight does not necessarily mean to be fatter because muscle do weigh more than fat. To me Tom looked more trimmed and gorgeous than ever. It's just that the stylist should look for fitting T-shirts for Tom because IMO that blue shirt was way too small for his muscle packed arms and chest

And as mentioned here before, there are candid pics of Tom which were taken at the beginning of March where Tom looks slimmed down. He's not too thin on these pictures but he mustn't slim down more.

I´m afraid you´re wrong. As you can read elsewhere, the short hair in S7 is Tom´s very own wish. Maybe not the exact style of the hairdo, but at least the fact that it is kept short. :o

I think Christopher Reeve looked older than 26. That is not to say that he looked bad. It is just that going by looks alone, I would have guessed him to be in his thirties.

As for Tom Welling, he looked like he was in his twenties during season 1 of Smallville. He was smaller then, but I like the way he looks now better. He looks more like Superman without his suit on. Oddly enough, I was thinking he looked thinner in this episode or at least his face looked thinner and younger. I had no trouble relating to this Clark & Pete because they looked so much like they did three years ago.

I had to look at this thread just to see what all the fuss was about. Normally I wouldn't post to something like this but decided to give my thoughts on the subject.

Just because Tom looked younger than his age in the beginning doesn't mean he has to keep looking younger than his age now. The important thing is that he is a very talented actor and is very fit physically to play the part of Clark Kent and could even play the part of Superman without having to use the fake muscle suit.

As a woman with a Cherokee heritage I think Tom's shorter hair shows off those wonderful Native American features that makes him a handsome man. It seems to me that Tom is comfortable with the way he is so he doesn't have to keep up the Clark Kent look in his private life. The only person that he really has to make happy is his wife.

So, all you people out there that are so critical of the way Tom looks on and off the screen should just accept the fact that your opinion doesn't really matter and probably what I say doesn't matter as well.

To close, I'm a big fan of Smallville and am very happy there will be an 8th season and will watch it till the very end. Wado "Thank you" to those that give us great entertainment with the wonderful series, Smallville:) SnowBird

You're rigth on the one hand, but on the other, I think, actors aren't so much free in choosing their looks, when they're signed in for a movie/show etc.

I've read e.g. somewhere about Chloe's hair in the beginning of season 3, that the producers weren't happy about her short haircut, with which she returned from the holiday break, so they used to put extensions to her hair until they were the length, they wanted Chloe to have.

So, as far as Clark's hair's concerned, I don't think, Tom is free to do with his hair whatever he wants either.
Maybe they don't mind the length though, but they surely would mind, if he would have any drastic change.
And, as I said before, I don't mind the length either, I only don't like the way it's styled.

He is gaining muscle...the reason he looks bigger is because he now has alot more muscle then he did before. In seasons 3 &4 he weighted alot less but I bet you he was also alot weaker then he is now. He is just as toned as he was back then he just has alot more muscle mass. He has bigger arms and chest....his six pack is still defined.

However, its such a minor difference, it makes very little difference overall. His body is more or less still the same.

That picture is real old. I remember seeing that about a year ago. In fact he doesn't look fat at all in that picture...it looks like he just lost alot of muscle and weight in that one..

Could also be because of the way he is standing too

He is gaining muscle...the reason he looks bigger is because he now has alot more muscle then he did before. In seasons 3 &4 he weighted alot less but I bet you he was also alot weaker then he is now. He is just as toned as he was back then he just has alot more muscle mass. He has bigger arms and chest....his six pack is still defined.

He looks buffer and you can really see the definition in his arms and chest when he just wears shirts. Some people just see someone getting buffer and assume they are getting fat....wow

I know he gained alot of weight last summer, but lost it before the season started filming. I think today's society is way too focused on who weighs what.

What's considered "the norm" has even changed quite a bit over the last 20 years, for men AND women. The ideal weight scale has been reduced.

I'd be happy to see him gain a little, AND bulk up. It would help with the perception of transition from farm boy, to Superman.

But Tom looks amazing no matter how he looks.

He always appears "bigger" in the red and blue jackets because they have such a boxey cut to them, and as the show has gone on, they have dressed him in them more and more. Whether it's season one or season seven, if Clark is wearing just a t-shirt, he looks muscular and thin.

The only exception is his face. His face was very thin in the early seasons but is fuller in the later seasons. I think that is just the way men age (women age the opposite - we lose the fat in our faces as we get into our thirties).

We have watched TW/Clark go from boy to man over the last seven years.

:p I've had this discussion, at length, somewhere before. TW's aging like the finest wine, IMO. Now, he looks like a man. I DO know of and have seen many young men who are in their early twenties and they look Older than Tom. When he was actually that age, in the pictures I've seen of him, he looks like a 'baby', or like a 12 year old with the shadow of a full beard. It's uncanny. So, my solid response to this thread is reflected in 'AG1211's comment. DITTO! :D

The picture where tom welling is acting like Lionel (i forgot the episode name) i'm pretty much impressed by his physique in that episode, as I am losing weight and want to get at least a good solid stomach like tom. Incremental progress and small changes are happening and noticeable, just takes time. So Tom is definite an inspiration to me. Can't wait for Idol!!!! And yes as a guy I'll admit i find other guys charismatic, not ashamed to say it!
