Based on what I had heard beforehand from the spoilers, I really thought the episode would turn out differently.
When I heard that Pete was not going to be too pleased about Lionel, Lana and Chloe knowing about Clark's secret, I thought this episode would be a wake-up call for Clark. We've had people tell Clark to be more proactive this season. Lana said something about his importance to the world in Action. Then Oliver sort of drove the point home in Siren when he pointed out Clark's inaction.
I thought, despite Pete's meteor powers in this episode, the title "Hero" would refer to Clark Kent. What better way to change Clark's mind about things than by bringing one of his old best friends back onto the show to give him that wake up call? It could have went down much differently, but instead we dealt with an impetuous Pete Ross. Clark is living through these changes, so maybe he doesn't realize how much he's "lost his way" in a sense. For someone who knew him well to come in from the outside and point these changes out to him, I thought that would be a great way for CK to reflect on his own life since Pete left, or at least since Jonathan died.
When Clark and Pete were playing basketball and Pete mentioned how his dad wouldn't be too happy to see a Luthor in his kitchen, they touched upon what I'm getting at, but Clark shrugged it off by saying a lot has happened.
Granted, a lot HAS happened, but not all of those changes are good changes. Clark has chosen domestic bliss over his more important destiny as a potential savior of humankind. I thought to myself, what a great OPPORTUNITY for Pete to come along and set Clark back on track. I'm not saying Clark has to go and dump Lana (for all you Clana fans out there), but he should have a broader outlook, like he did in Season 6. And then, the only reason he had a broader outlook was because the Zoners were his responsibility. When will Clark realize that his responsibilities extend far beyond his own messes and managing the Kent farm? Even Martha Kent took on considerable responsibilities to help people out on a national scale - it's too bad her example flew right over Clark's head. I really wanted Pete to remind Clark how important he is to the world.
If anything, this episode focused too much on PETE learning a valuable lesson. Not Clark! And that was a real tragedy, IMO. They could have both learned something.
What do you guys think? What hopes did you have for Hero?
