I was thinking that with all the stuff that Lex has been through throughout his childhood with how his parents were - how Lionel treated him and his mother and how his mother treated Lex....

Was Lionel's "I love you, son" too little too late? The damage had been done.

Even though it seems like he meant it, it also came out sounding odd, ill timed and unconvincing.

Of course Lionel's I love you was to late, after seeing inside of Lex's head, there's no saving him now

^very true it's never too late to tell someone you love them, as long as you mean it.

With the past that those two have unfortunately saying I love just isn't enough

But Lex has absolutely no reason to believe Lionel means it. Considering the last (and probably only) time Lionel said that, he was just trying to switch bodies with Lex to escape prison. And this came after he tried to poison Lex.

I think Lex's reaction to Lionel's 'I love you' pretty much summed up the state of their relationship.

Of course it's too late. They established this back in season 3 in the episode Memoria. I guess Lionel is a slow learner.

I do agree it's too late but Lionel finally said it. What was weird was that exhaling breath sound. It reminded me of the passover scene in "The Prince of Egypt" when the cloud killed the first born we hear that exhaling sound. Also IMO Lionel finally told Lex he loved him, and called him son. Time to kill the MB.

Definitely too late. Lionel has done far too much damage for Lex to care anymore.

Yeah, I agree. It may not repair their relationship, but if Lex does kill Lionel, he'll always know that Lionel loved him even if he didn't love him back. And that may be on his mind as he's preparing to kill him.

I don't blame Lex for walking away. Lionel has been making his life a living hell for years and now he tries to pull this card. Can Lex even believe him at this point? I'm not even sure if I believe him myself. He still plays head games with Lex half the time.

His "I love you" is too late by about 4 years, yeah.

Oh, yeah! How can you forget everything in the past and just take it at face value (especially considering how many faces Lionel has!).

I think that after he gave up on Julian (and had him murdered), Lex has given up seeking love. I think that he no longer believes in it, or wants it. He has hardened his heart now, and that actually makes him very dangerous. I dont' think he's after Kara so that he can get into a relationship with her. I think that he wants to find out her secrets, and is using her vulnerability to do so.

I think it wasn't too late, hell I wish my dad would say that to me but he never grew a heart =(

Lionel was sincerely sad and sorry for everything he ever did to he but I guess it was too late for lex

I've heard Lionel say that same line a few times now, i think Lionel can just about say one "i love you" each season... Looks like lex will be getting no love until season 8

From Lex's POV it may be too little too late. A friend and I were talking about it and said that it was tragic that Lionel became a man who could love his son just when Lex hardened his heart to love... something like that. This was one of the highlights of the episode for me. I thought immediately about the episode from Season 3, "Truth." Lex was so hungry to hear these words.

in a word, yes. This moment is significant, the power shift in their relationship just shifted to lex...

gone are the days lex would pine after his fathers affections. Lionel knew this, and knew it made lex weak. Watch out lionel

I have to agree that I don't think Lex is seeking love anymore. He only gets hurt, because he can never do what's right. He's always got to force stuff, which never works.
