The little argument between Lana and Lionel, personally i think Lionel knows Lex better, obviously he doesnt know Lex's bed habbits or stuff like that :p, but i think thats the only sort of thing Lana knows about Lex that Lionel doesn't.

I would have to say Lionel, although Lex may of shared his deepest secrets with Lana; she still doesn't know him completly as a person... Lionel out of all people knows better about his son and his master plans.

Lana - Lionel was very distant during Lex's childhood and barely knows what drives him at all. Lex opened up that side of him to Lana and she's been tracking his secret projects on the side. Think of it this way, before Static, Lionel didn't know about 33.1. Darth Lana would have known about it for ages (but Normal Lana was on one of her "I'm always right, I don't believe you, lalalalala" egotrips - even JIMMY found the huge fricking power cable!)

I was thinking along the lines of who is more aware of Lex's mental problem, faking a pregnnancy and unsuccessfully cloning your wife v.s. clonging your dead baby brother, and then killing 2 versions of him when he doesn't work out.

Of course Lionel. Lionel walked down the same path Lex did, but in reverse. Lionel started out bad and saw the error in his ways. Lex started out good and chose the wrong path mainly because of the distrust he had with the way he was raised (also due to his own refusal to change). Lex can't hide stuff from Lionel because Lionel experienced what Lex is experiencing now. For Lana to even think that she knows Lex more is ridiculous and shows how full of herself she is.

I think Lionel knows Lex better, in terms of motives. He can better anticipate Lex's actions. Plus, he knows how to psychologically hurt him.
Lana, however, has a better understanding of what it feels like to be victimized and manipulated by Lex. If Lex's "love" was at all ever real, then Lana knows how to hurt him emotionally.
Neither of these factors, however states outrightly who knows Lex better...I mean, Lionel's hurting right now from the loss of Grant, and he can't prove that Lex had anything to do with it yet... Lex is so unpredictable these days. Maybe neither of them know him best, anymore.

I would have to say Lana. Lionel knows him well, of course, but I just feel like Lana knows him better. Lex, essentially, is evil. Lana knows that.
Lionel, to me, seems like he thinks Lex is good. Or at least, he wants Lex to be good.

There is no way Lana knows him more than Lionel. Lionel just last episode said that he lost Lex (meaning he knows he's evil). Lionel also told Lex (I think in Phantom) that he thinks he can fool everyone but that he will never fool him. Lionel has called Lex on his stuff over & over again and even called Lana on her stuff after he killed Marilyn and got away from her cabin in Action.
Lionel knows that Lex is past saving. His problem is that he still loves Lex because he's his son. That's why he has protected him when Lex's life was in danger many times, including many occasions after the point where Lionel knew that Lex was past saving. If Lionel wasn't Lex's father and Lex was the way he was, he would have killed Lex (or allowed him to die) a long time ago. But if Lionel wasn't Lex's father, Lex would probably not be who he is today. Lionel knows what he created better than anyone. He told Clark about this back in Vessel after Jor-El told Clark that he must kill Zod's vessel. And for that one episode, Lionel even got out of Clark's way, allowing Clark to kill Lex if he chose to.
The 2 people who know Lex the most and know what he is capable of are Lionel & Lillian's ghost. The only portion of Lex that Lana can relate to is the part where he was victimized by Lionel since she herself was victimized by Lex, who is the product of Lionel's victimizing. But Lionel also knows about that since his parents also treated him like crap (they were criminals & alcoholics). And that's why he killed them (not only for the insurance money--because if he loved them he wouldn't have done that).
Lana's problem is that she can't tell the difference between justice and revenge. What Lana was doing earlier this season was revenge. What Lionel wants to do is get justice for Grant. He realizes that he must step up to the plate and take Lex down just as Lex did to him with Clark's & Chloe's help in season 3.

Lionel, definitely. He was there to witness Lex's tragic childhood and greatly impacted the person he is today.

Lionel. However, the problem here is that Lionel's been evil most of his life, and only seems to recognize Lex's evil doings when it goes beyond what Lionel would do. He's known all along how bad Lex is but greatly ignores because he knows he doesn't have the parenting skills to turn it around.
Lana now sees every move Lex makes as wrong, something I don't think Lionel sees yet. So in essence, I think Lana knows more of the dangers of Lex than Lionel does.

I disagree. Lionel has known for a while that what Lex is doing is wrong. That's why he keeps tabs on him. I think because he's his father, a part of him is hoping that Lex will change. But now after Grant was killed, I think that part of him is gone and he wants to spend all his energy bringing Lex to justice. It seems like Lionel had previously tried to use his underhanded techniques to force Lex to change, but it just didn't work. That's what covering for the murder of Dr. Langston in Promise was. Lionel was in it mostly to help Clark and ignored the threat of Lex. He only looked at Lex when Lex was hiding something related to Clark (as it was with Reeves Dam).

I also think that a huge reason Lionel was helping Clark was because he wanted to prepare Clark to deal with Lex in a non-violent manner. This would satisfy Lionel since he knew Clark wouldn't kill Lex (who Lionel still loves) and would deter the threat that is Lex. But the problem is that Clark isn't stepping up to the plate as he did when he was the main factor in bringing down Lionel in season 3. For this reason, I think in the future Clark will take Lionel's death pretty hard because it is something that he could have prevented. I think this will be a major factor in his turn towards becoming Superman.

I don't think either of them really know Lex. Throughout the whole show no one has ever taken the time to really get to know Lex. They've just decided he must be devious because his father is. Lionel saw him as weak when Lex was showing compassion. He was always treated as a monster and now he's become what others assumed he was but I don't think that's who he really is.
I think Lex is actually very sensative. And by that i mean his feelings get hurt quite easily. He doesn't break down and cry or feel sorry for himself, he just gets angry now and vengful. He's had a broken heart since julian died, but I think who he really is, is actually a good person. He just doesn't let that good person come to the surface anymore.
But to be specific, no one knows lex. No one knows how devious or sociopathic he can be. No one knows what he's capable of. Just when everyone thinks they've got him figured out he does something jaw droppingly shocking.
lionel pretty much made him who he is, so I'd say Lionel knows him better.

Lana knows Lex because they are actually very, very similar. Lex is just a more extreme version. If Lana had grown up as Lex did, she'd be just like him.
Lionel knows Lex on a different level--a level of careful study. He knows what Lex is capable of, but doesn't feel the same things himself.
One might say Lionel knows Lex consciously much better, but Lana knows him subconsciously much better. Lionel knows Lex better by analysis, Lana knows Lex better by identity or through "it takes one to know one" kind of knowledge.
