There’s no doubt about it, once Lex kills his father his journey to the dark side will reach a point of no return. Lionel’s a changed man, to a degree but the consequences of his youthful rebellion will inevitably overtake him in the end. Lionel deserves his fate for the man he was and still hasn’t completely atoned for. He reminds me of the character played by Christopher Plummer in the Spike Lee film, Inside Man who profited off the Nazis during WW 2 (so did Bush’s grandfather in addition to a great many wealthy people in America and Europe, but I digress) and used the money to build a financial empire. Clive Owen’s voice over at the film’s end was chilling, “if you spend a lifetime running away from your sins, it’ll only guarantee that you’ll be out of breath by the time they catch up with you.” There's no earthly redemption for Lionel, no matter what he does he'll never blot away the stain of his past and it’ll be a form of ironic, poetic justice when he dies at the hands of his son whose evil nature he helped mold—and after his own image at that! Lionel is like an Ebenezer Scrooge who wakes up after his dark night of the soul anxious to celebrate the holiday armed with his newfound epiphany of humanitarian goodwill only to discover that it’s the day after Christmas and he’s missed his chance. Goodbye Lionel, RIP.

Brilliantly put! You understand the Lionel character well! :)

(and that's a big compliment from me, since he is my favorite character on the show, aside from Lex).
