This begins with Clark's last sentence to Lana at the end of SIREN and extends their time through the night. This is a one shot.
SIREN: Extended Ending - one-shot 2/7/08
“I don’t want this to be over,” Clark said as he looked deeply into Lana‘s eyes.
Lana smiled slightly as she stared back into Clark’s eyes. She reached out and took his hand in hers, drawing him over to the sofa. Clark sat down, and Lana sat beside him, turning toward him with one leg tucked beneath her.
“So,” she began with a small grin, “when’d you steal a Lamborghini?”
If Clark was finally at a place where he could open up and be honest, Lana was going to make the most of it.
Clark smiled back at her, with a chuckle. “That summer when I ran off to Metropolis. I broke all the rules, did whatever I wanted, took whatever I wanted.”
“Why’d you go, Clark - when we had just gotten together? Why’d you leave me?” Lana asked.
“Lana, I caused my Mom to lose her baby. I caused my parents so much pain - I couldn’t deal with that. I just had to get away. And, my biological father had insisted that I leave, branding a Kryptonian symbol onto my chest, and telling me it was time to fulfill my destiny. He said if I didn’t obey him, I would hurt everyone that I love. I saw it happening - & I didn’t want to hurt you too - so I left. I tried to escape from it all, and just indulge myself. But I was so lonely. It was an empty life.”
Lana nodded, then looked up at Clark. She figured that if they were going to be open and honest with each other, then it ought to go both ways. “Your turn. Ask me something you want to know about me.”
“Okay,” Clark replied, then thought for a moment. “During the second meteor shower, you brought me one of the stones of power, stained in blood. What happened?”
Lana took a long deep breath and released it slowly. “Wow, you went straight for the jugular, Clark.”
“Oh. I didn’t mean…I mean if you…” Clark began, but Lana cut him off.
“No, no. It’s okay, Clark. You deserve to know. I want you to know everything. That’s the only way we’re going to be able to move forward at all. That was the blood of Genevieve Teague. She came after me in my apartment, demanding that I give her a stone she thought Lionel had given to me. The only stone I had was given to me by Jason, not Lionel, but I pulled it out. We struggled. Next thing I knew, I was sitting over her dead body, with the bloody stone in my hands.” Lana lowered her eyes. “I’d stabbed her with it, Clark,” she whispered.
Lana’s hands began to shake as she relived the experience. Clark scooted closer to her and wrapped her in his arms, pulling her head to his chest.
“It’s okay, Lana. It was self defense,” Clark said, trying to reassure her.
Lana lifted her head to look at Clark. She saw no condemnation in his eyes, only compassion and love. “Clark, the strange thing was that I didn’t remember it happening. It’s like I blanked out. Also, after that day, the tattoo on my back was gone - you know the one I showed you, that I got in Paris...wait! It was a Kryptonian symbol, wasn’t it, Clark?” She looked at him with large eyes.
Clark nodded as he loosened his hold on her, sliding his hands down her arms and clasping her hands in his own. “Yes. It was. It’s the symbol for water, the element of transference. Somehow, it allowed Isobel to possess you.” A thought occurred to him. “Lana, whenever Isobel possessed you, you came out of it with no memory of what had happened, right?”
Lana nodded.
“Well, then, I believe it was Isobel who stabbed Genevieve Teague - not you. She vowed to kill the descendants of Gertrude - and she did. She just made use of you.”
“Well, that helps a bit - but at the time, I was so afraid and confused. And Lex came in and found me. He wanted to cover it up for me, and get his lawyers to help and all. But I didn’t trust him, Clark. Somehow, I knew he only wanted the stone. So I decided to give it to you instead.” Lana shifted her position and looked up at Clark. “What’d you ever do with it anyway?”
“Well, Lana, I put it in the table, in the cave, with the first one I had found previously. And they sent out a beacon, leading me to the final stone. Lionel had it. Somehow, because he was in possession of it when the stones were united, Lionel became Jor-El’s emissary.”
Lana’s eyes widened in surprise.
“I know, Lana, it’s screwed up. There’s so much more to tell. Let’s see. Where to begin?”
Clark began to tell Lana everything that had happened since he first encountered Jor-El. He told about the summer when she was in Paris and how Jor-El had stripped him of his identity and forced him to go find the first stone - and that it was Lex who had it. He told her how he united the stones to created the Fortress of Solitude. He told her about Martian Manhunter. He told her about what happened when he died and came back, and about what Jor-El said about someone he loves dying in his place. Everything he could think of, he told her, not wanting her to be in the dark about anything any more.
When he paused, Lana squeezed his hand and said, “Clark, I wish you would have told me all of this a long time ago. I mean, so much of what has happened to me - from Isobel, to Zod, to Lex and Lionel and Brainiac - is connected to this apparently Kryptonian battle going on. We could have worked together to sort it all out. Why could you never tell me the truth, Clark? Why?”
Lana looked into his eyes with a pained expression. He decided he had to tell her one last thing. “I did tell you, Lana.”
Lana furrowed her eyebrows as Clark continued. He told her about the day he took her to the Fortress, and told her the truth, and proposed to her. He told her about the accident and her death. Speaking of it was quite difficult for him. Lana could see the anguish he had experienced.
“So, I used a crystal from the Fortress, and turned back time, to save you, Lana. Yes, I threw out the moral boundaries, when it came to saving you.” Clark went on to tell her about Jonathan’s death, and how he blamed himself for it.
Lana was overwhelmed by this last set of revelations. She threw herself into Clark’s arms and sobbed uncontrollably, clinging to him tightly. Clark just held her close, and stopped talking.
After a time, Lana calmed a bit, and lifted her head so as to look into Clark’s eyes. “I’m so sorry, Clark,” she said through her sniffles. She thought for a few moments, then added, “That’s why you pushed me away, after that, isn’t it? When you lied and told me you didn’t love me anymore.”
Clark lowered his eyes. “Yes,” he said quietly. “I thought I was protecting you. But that was the stupidest thing I’ve ever done, Lana. I hurt you so much, & pushed you straight into Lex’s arms.”
“It wasn’t all your fault, Clark,” Lana told him. “Lex orchestrated it - he sent Simone to hypnotize you, to try to break us up. It was a planned, calculated move on his part, Clark. And so was everything else he used me for.”
Clark looked at her with questioning eyes, and Lana began to tell him everything - everything Lex had done to mess with her head. All the ways he lied, pretending to be open with her, when he was actually deceiving her. How he drugged her, and faked the pregnancy and miscarriage.
This time, it was Clark who was overwhelmed by what he was hearing. “Lana,” he managed to say, “I had no idea you were going through all of that. I’m so sorry - sorry I wasn’t there for you, sorry I couldn’t save you, sorry I judged you wrongly.” Tears slid down Clark’s face and he again pulled Lana into his arms. He needed to hold her. He needed her to hold him.
Clark and Lana continued on, all the way through the night, revealing everything to each other. By morning, there wasn’t a secret left to be told.
They sat there, gazing into each other’s eyes, Clark stroking Lana’s face gently. The bond they felt was like none they’d ever experienced before. Clark lowered his lips to hers. He kissed her softly, tenderly, once, twice, three times… and more. Lana slid her hand behind his neck, and pulled him closer, deeper. They clung to each other, the kissing intensifying. Finally, Lana broke it, in need of air.
“I love you, Clark - all of you. For so long, I’ve been in love with only a part of you - I’ve been in love with the farm boy. But I never really knew a whole other side of you - the hero. Clark, you are so much more than I ever realized. You try so hard to help people, to protect them. You make life or death decisions every day. And I never understood. But I do, now, Clark. And I feel so honored to be a part of your life, in a way I never could before. I want to be here for you, Clark. No matter what.”
Clark smiled and stroked Lana’s face as he gazed into her eyes. “Thank you, Lana. Thank you for believing in me, for waiting for me, and never giving up on us. I love you, Lana - the real you. Not just the image of you I created in my mind. I see you now. And I love you, more than I ever thought possible. Love is so much more than warm-fuzzy feelings. This…this is love - openness, honesty, baring our souls to one another, desiring what is truly best for each other - no matter what. Lana, I still don’t know what the future holds - for me, for you, for us. I feel a duty to use my gifts, for good. I’ve tried giving them up, Lana, and it ended badly, like I already told you.”
“I wouldn’t want you to give them up, Clark. They’re a large part of who you are,” Lana said.
“But, Lana, with my abilities, I keep my Kryptonian physiology. I won’t age like humans do. My life span could be longer than I care to imagine. It’s terrifies me. But it also has implications for us. I can’t “grow old” with you, Lana - not unless I use blue Kryptonite, and give up my abilities. I don’t have any more anyway, but even if I did, I just don’t think I could do it - at least, not until I’d spent a good long time using my abilities for good in this world.”
Lana nodded her understanding. “And by then, I’ll be long gone, and you’ll find someone new to be with. I get it, Clark. But, for now, while I’m here, and we’re both young, can’t we just be together - for a while?”
“Lana, I can’t give you the life you’ve dreamed of, settled down together to have a family, devoting my entire self to you. I can’t do that now.”
“It’s okay, Clark. I can share you with the world. I’d rather have some of you, than none at all,” Lana told him as she caressed his face. “Go on. Be a superhero. Save people. Save the world. I want you to do that, Clark. But I want you to remember that I’m here for you, any time you need me. I want you to come and draw strength from me, when you need it. I want to support you as much as I can.”
“But, Lana, you want a family. I can’t give that to you. Children deserve to have a father who can be there,” Clark said. “And that’s why I feel so torn. Because I love you so much, Lana, that I want you to have everything you’ve ever dreamed of in this life - but I can’t give it to you and still remain true to myself.”
“Clark,” Lana said, “let’s just agree to take it one day at a time, okay? Maybe, somehow, things will work themselves out for us.”
“Yeah,” Clark said with a soft smile.
“Right now, Clark, I just want to be with you, in this present moment. Kiss me, Clark,” she said as she tipped her head back invitingly.
Clark gazed into her eyes, getting lost in them. He then leaned in to capture her lips with his own. A hot and heavy make out session began right there, at six a.m. “Make love to me, Clark,” Lana whispered to him.
“Lana…” he said, as he hesitated.
“Please, Clark. I need you. Whatever the consequences, we’ll deal with them. But right here, and right now, it’s our time - maybe the only time we’ll ever get. Let’s not waste it, Clark.”
Clark gazed into her eyes and knew he couldn’t refuse her. “I love you, Lana. Let me show you how much.”
And he lifted her into his arms and carried her upstairs.
