Erica REALLY did do a great job.
I never expected something like that to come from Lois -- which made it even better.
She really delivered.
She was good throughout the entire episode. She's rapidly catching on as an actress.

She was incredible! When she was crying with Clark, and when she ended it with Ollie. Erica isnt given many scenes like these, and they are her strong point obviously! I was very impressed.

SHE IS TOO GOOD.
Espcially in another: Prototype.
When she says, "Remember me!"
I somehow feel at the same time, embarasment and chills.

This was without a doubt Erica's finest moment in this series in terms of acting. Just incredible. I'm glad they finally gave her a scene that allowed her to show off her talent. She was great. Plus, I loved seeing that side of Lois for a change. Did anyone else think she was gonna make a move on Clark?

Lois was wonderful in this episode (although I always think she's great :D). It was so nice to finally see Lois completely break down for once. The fact that she felt comfortable enough to do it in front of Clark made it all the more beautiful. Erica was really good at that emotional scene and I really felt like it was real.

I Agree with everyone! Erica was great in this episode, especially in the sceen with her and Clark in the Talon together. We hardly ever get to see that side of Lois, and it was great to see that side of her. Her acting was amazing in that sceen, and it almost made me tear up, which I hardly ever do!

Erica was absolutely incredible tonight. I was in tears by the time she finished giving her speech at the Talon. I think it was definitely the best emotional scene she had ever done on the show. And her chemistry with Tom was really apparent.

I thought it was moving and poignant.
I loved Erica Durance's acting.
I really felt for her.
And her powerless that she would love someone with a great purpose, that she did not want to be left behind again.
That is so me, that is so me standing there, afraid that I can't compete. Afraid that I can never be someone's number one. Oh my god! :( I cried so hard and so bad that my eyes are actually puffy. Her scene with Clark at the end . . . blew me away. Oh my god! I cried in Memoria, I cried in Justice but I have never cried so hard and so long as I did during that scene.
She totally sold how afraid Lois is, something she has to overcome, and I think it was important that the scene was with Clark because he will one day be the man that she CAN share with the world, that she won't doubt his importance in her life. Not to say we will see such a romance on this show, I don't think we will. However usually when they allude to the 'future' it isn't with nearly as much grace as this scene was. Lois is a hard @ss, someone who doesn't want to keep being heartbroken. I think this scene went well to show why in other Superman incarnations that Clark has a hard time convincing Lois why they can work.
Tom Welling also was wonderful here, looking like he was close to tears himself seeing Lois so upset. No anvils (excepting the 'destiny' part but even that just didn't come across as anvil), no cheese, my GOD. I keep saying that, but I really cannot believe that a Smallville Clois (not romantic Clois, just friendship Clois) scene got to me like that, but it did. I loved how Clark knew she wasn't being honest with herself about why it wouldn't work, how he knew there was something more to it, and yet comforted her in her sorrow anyway.
Any Clois fans out there that weren't getting enough Clois scenes, that definitely made up for those missing scenes in spades. It is nice to see that Clark and Lois really are friends and really do care about each other. This is the comfort I wanted to see from Chloe after Justice, but I have to admit that it was actually pretty lovely coming from Clark. He's in his own dark place with Lana and yet still there for his friends.
Like the scene with Oliver before it the music also helped to make this work, more orchestral movie score than pop music angst. Which worked quite well. Also as with the scene with Oliver, Lois understood that the world needed her loved ones more than she does, and she didn't come across as bitter about that. More just sad acceptance.
I'm speechless . . . between the hitching sobs of grief that is. That is just so me in her shoes right then. Even now, as secure as I am about myself, as much as I like myself I just don't see how I'll ever be able to be the 'moon and the stars' for anyone. It has been far too much trial with far too much error. Lois is doing what I've done so many times, doom slaying herself, selling herself short . . . and yet after upset after failure after upset it's so hard to not doom slay yourself. For me it is anyway, and for Lois too I'd say. It also gets into her issues with her father, and thinking that she was never good enough for him.
Wow, I'm just . . . wow. :( I love Erica and I love her Lois but I never expected to be affected this strongly. I just . . .my god. I'm still crying!
Anyway here it is.
-----------------
*Clark enters apartment to find Lois on the couch eating ice cream*
Lois - Enter at your own caloric risk.
Clark - How you doing?
Lois- Besides the metaphor? I was hoping rocky road would help, but nothing, nada. Not even a dent.
*puts ice cream down as Clark comes closer*
Lois - You know . . . I thought Grant would help me get over Ollie and if that didn't end badly enough . . .the moment I saw Ollie again, all those feelings just came rushing right back up.
Clark - Maybe it can still work between you two.
*Lois shakes her head and goes over to the kitchenette*
Lois - You don't know Ollie like I do. There are parts of him you've never seen.
*Clark smirks a bit*
Clark - That's a given.
*Lois is briefly amused but shakes her head*
Lois - I mean sides of him. He's got this one side that I'm not sure I can live with.
Clark - How would you know if you don't give it a chance?
Lois - We're not you and Lana, we're not the perfect couple, we are not destined for each other.
*Clark has an unreadable look before speaking*
Clark - Lois, this isn't like you. Normally, when things get challenging that's when you get interested.
Lois - This is different. My Dad was a general, and he cared about me, but I learned really early that his role in the world was a lot more important than being a father. And you know what? For good reasons. Ollie's life is . . . demanding, too.
Clark - Lois, just because someone's life is great responsibility doesn't mean your life has to take second place.
*Clark speaks sincerely, as does Lois with her dead seriousness with her next words.*
Lois - Of course it does, Clark. Can you imagine what it would be like to look into somebody's eyes and know that their destiny is so much greater than yours, that you will never compete? You will always be left behind.
*Lois starts to cry, heartbroken even as she is certain of her own words*
*Clark looks very sad as well now.*
Clark - That would be hard for anyone, but . . .
Lois - No! I can't be left behind one more time. You know, where Ollie's life is going, there's not room for me in it. I know he'd never admit that, so . . . I had to. I just, um, I can't face another heartbreak down the road.
*Clark looks as if he wants to sasy something, but instead moves forward and hugs Lois, she hugs him back, face pressed into his shoulder as he rubs her back comfortingly. Lois smiles sadly, then warmly.*
Lois - Besides, you know, why settle for hot, rich and famous when I can hang out with you?
*they both smile and keep hugging*
---------------------------------
I know I'm going to get flack for saying this, but I don't care, I feel sincerely about it so why pretend I don't? Had that scene transitioned into a later scene FAR down the road when Clark and Lois are involved it reminds of 'Walk the Line' Where Johnny Cash is asking June Carter to marry him on stage (for the last time) and he knows that she's been hurt badly, so many times that she can't open her heart for him even though she loves him, and he tells her that he isn't those other men, he won't leave her behind.
I loved this scene, it was fantastic! Even though I'm still crying. I do gotta say though, that if THIS canon connected with future canon, I'd be a little miffed if I was Oliver. She could do the whole dual identity thing with Clark, but not him. I wrote a REALLY angsty fic about future Lolliepop and the scenes in this episode would have fit perfectly with it. So sad, but such awesomeness. I loved it, even as I balled my eyes out, I loved it.
The only wink!wink anvilicious moment came from the Clark/Oliver scene after it. When Clark says maybe Lois can deal with the dual identity thing someday and Oliver says "Yeah, when? When the Earth cracks open and time ticks backwards?" Which of course happens in Superman: The Movie, where an earthquake claims Lois' life and Superman spins around the Earth to turn it backwards so he can save Lois.
Superb acting from all the cast in this episode!

I thought Chloe (A. Mack) did really good with her emotions/actions; Lana (K. Kruek) did a great job too. Although Lana's character seemed to be getting a lashing due to confrontation - she did great considering.
The entire cast did good, IMO.
But Erica.. damn, she was off the wall. I think people are giving her so much praise be cause her performance was so unexpected.
She really was the highlight of the episode performance wise.

Oh I didn't even think about that! Yeah, I wonder what he was going to say. But how unselfish of him to just listen and be there for her. It's very rare that Lois opens up like that. I wouldn't be surprised if he forgot about whatever he was going to say.
I wonder what happened after the hug. If Lois was sweet and awkward or if the walls went up and she made a joke and punched his arm.
Probably Black Canary called and THEN Lois made a joke and punched Clark's arm. :)

When has Clark, been prolific, about any thing ? :(
lol, she probably did. as females, just won't let males talk.:p
Lois for me, in that scene, was more or less saying, I'm not worthy of a Superhero's love. CK's 'probably' wanted to say, "if he loves you, you will NEVER doubt yourself.";)

Well I guess if Oliver is hot, rich and famous then that would make Clark cold, poor and obscure. LOL! Only Lois could make a couched insult so yummy. :D

I agree, Erica was really good in this episode.
I still wish they wouldn't have had Lois giving into Oliver at the beginning... I'm glad she didn't as it ended.
One thing I've noticed when doing the interviews for the books is Erica truly does seem to care about the character a lot, and she really thinks things through. Sure, some of the things Lois has done have been unpopular at times, but I don't think that can be blamed on Erica at all.

I think on paper it was one of her infamous back handed compliments --- but Erica's delivery brought it to such a different place. It felt like, finally, a genuine moment to see how much Lois cares about Clark and just how highly he ranks in her life.
If I had just read that line, I would have imagined it spouted off in her trademark flippancy. Maybe a shoulder punch for good measure.

but Erica's delivery brought it to such a different place. It felt like, finally, a genuine moment to see how much Lois cares about Clark and just how highly he ranks in her life.

But that's not we got at all. And it became a moment that was truly special.
She really did. She took it somewhere new. She was so vulnerable and truthful and just... delighting in that hug. Erica made it special. The whole scene really. I sort of held my breath while she was talking about her father. And then her voice broke. It was just... WOW.

It was certainly refreshing to see a vulnerable Lois for once. I'm not a huge Lois fan but Erica deserves praise for this episode

-----------------
---------------------------------
I know I'm going to get flack for saying this, but I don't care, I feel sincerely about it so why pretend I don't?
Superb acting from all the cast in this episode!
great feedback, and I'm totally in the same boat as you, I was crying and the episode was over and i just stood there with a tissue and I just kept thinking of all that Lois said and I couldnt stop crying, I kno exactly what it means to be 2nd choice, anyone that noticed me and pursued me only to be their 2nd choice, I'm never anyone priority, It's such a horrible feeling...I never much liked Lois, but her and Ollie were cute. and I did like the chemistry between her and Clark. its so awesome to relate to our characters after 7 seasons;)

I'm a huge Lois fan but really for her comedic timing and forceful presence. Her teary moments in Justice made me feel extremely awkward (not due to ED) and this ep had the potential to be the same. I ended up being very very very impressed instead.
Her breakup with Ollie was graceful and intriguing but the Clois scene was the tour de force. Lollie'd left me with some lingering questions, trying to make sense of this new more vulnerable Lois, however her speech to Clark at the end really illuminated her actions and made her so much more comprehensive, real, and suddenly beautiful in the way that flawed humanity can sometimes be.
I always enjoy it when SV gets the Silver Age comics attitude out of the way as part of the maturation process, like the "I can't share you with the world"!Lois from Superman II getting out of SV!Lois' system to pave the way for a more modern, grownup future. I like the comment by ginnyfan? or LLL? (sorry) who said that this also explains Clark's deep conviction in the difficulty of wooing Lois Lane in the future.
I think on paper it was one of her infamous back handed compliments --- but Erica's delivery brought it to such a different place. It felt like, finally, a genuine moment to see how much Lois cares about Clark and just how highly he ranks in her life.
This sounds dumb but I actually, um, didn't even realize it was an insult at the time. She delivered it so sweetly and sincerely that I was like "How can she be so openly loving???? Will DC allow this drastic SVClois step?" It was a great line and yes, it did make up for the Clois drought.

I don't think that sounds dumb at all. I'm sure most people's first reaction was very similar. Mine was.
It's just looking back on precedent that makes me think Durance really pulled a rabbit out of her hat with that one. Took it to a new place and NAILED the scene in a way that may not have even been its initial construction.
She was great tonight and that's usually hard for me to admit, especially when it concerns Lois, but Erica was fantastic.
She was great!

Absolutely spot on. Erica did a great job of expressing Lois' rarely scene vulnerable side which she oftens hides beneath the tough-chick facade. Kudos also to the writers of that scene. :D

You know? I'm not a great fan of Lois in this show. But tonight's epi got to me. Erica did a great job of conveying the conflicted personality of Lois in this mythos. If she ever comes to the place to accept a dual identity for her hero lover, it will be truly if the "the earth splits open and time turns back!"

Good point, Craig. I have read several interviews with Erica that have left me thinking that she seemed to have a better idea of how to play the relationships than the producers.
Anyway, I'll happily join in the praise for her performance in this episode, though I have to say I find it less of a surprise than some may have done. Erica has been quietly doing some excellent understated emotional scenes throughout her time on Smallville. However, because they are often small moments (sometimes no more than a couple of lines or a look), and Lois has been tagged by so many as "comic relief" (as if playing comedy is easier), they tend to get overlooked compared to Kristin and Allison's emotional scenes. Good to see her get a script that shows what she can do when she gets the right material.

Her acting kicked ass!!!
I thought she was great.
Could someone please go back and type out exactly what she said.
I thought it was moving and poignant.
I loved Erica Durance's acting.
I really felt for her.
And her powerless that she would love someone with a great purpose, that she did not want to be left behind again.
I absolutely agree.
A lot of times, I don't like how they make her say her dialogue at breakneck speed. And, in this case, it was done well because they allowed her to pause and reflect for a moment. Her final breakdown, with the tears shimmering in her eyes, was very well done.

This was her best acting since "Prototype" I dare to say, I love all, her scenes with Ollie, the way she tried to protected him, her final scene with Clark, just lovely, an excellent job of her.

I'm jumping into this thread late (thank you crappy dial-up connections), but while I thought ED was excellent, I was rooting for her to sell the emotions harder at first, I still think she's a little tough at truly selling the tearful moments, but by the end with the hug with Clark I figured she passed the class :)

I honestly think it's just a matter of giving Erica an emotional scene to play. For Lois they are few and far between. I always thought her tearful moment on Chloe's grave way back in Crusade was really genuine and well executed.
Chloe gets a lot of vulnerable moments (allowing AM to shine), and last year Lana was given scenes to play against type (which served KK well). It seems when they are allowed to stretch their characters, all three girls put up some good stuff.

She is a wonderful actor and never lacked anything in any of her previous scenes. The Clois scene was just the icing on the already awesome cake. :D;)
I actually liked her a lot this episode! For the frist time, and thanks to her succesful portrail of Lois, was I able to actually picture Clark sometime in the future being in love and having a commited relationship with this 'Smallville' Lois! Cos before, I just couldn't picture it!
I am sory Clois lovers, but all they did was grate on each others nerves', and not in a good way!
But now, ecpecially in that scene where he is comforting her and hugging her, I could really see her vurnability (now that she didn't have her protecting walls of sarcasm up) and I could picture her and Clark in a relationship!

That's cool, umm. :)
As a Cloiser, their future has always seemed so real to me and yet last night was a revelation. Not an anvil, not romantic, even lustful or anything. They just seemed very close; watching it, I could envision their long winding destinies being pulled into alignment at some distant point.
I guess as a Cloiser the weird part is that I've always been able to see Clark and Lois hook up (all too easily) but this episode made it feel less immediate and more a matter of a hard journey all its own that actually should take a very long time (off the show, no doubt, to boot). Maybe that made the Clois feel more real and less like canon shipperhood?
A big part of this difference in texture of Clois is the revelation that Lois shares Clark's deepseated resistence to destiny. Before, despite her lack of Pulitzer etc, I've always considered her to be the more finished product; as abrasive, confident, rockin' and canon as the Lois that jumps out at you in Loeb's comics. That's why I was so shocked -but ultimately impressed- when Erica and the writers made me realize in the ep that on the inside she's a much much younger and raw-er version. I guess I'll finally quit campaigning for Lois get a dark dye job; there are more qualitative differences for the future.

finally we could see the sensitive side of Lois and so Clark could saw a woman he didnīt know before, the way she opened her feelings and heart in front of Clark was touching, and how Clark was nice to her feeling sad for her and hugging her..I just loved it!:)

I liked Erica when she first appeared in Season 4 but as the seasons went on I began to truly feel she should never have come back after her first four episodes. It seemed her only purpose was T*A and to get dumped by every guy she likes. Tonight really made me love Lois and made me think ED is now one of the best actors on the show she just isnt allowed to show what she can do. I almost cried during her speech it was so sad and kinda made me hate Oliver again, then I got over it.

I agree that she had a stellar performance.
When she started crying, it felt very real, and the line that she delivered when she hugged Clark was just heart-wrenchingly sweet. It was really a milestone for her character, who usually hates to feel vulnerable-and in front of Clark, no less.:)
