After watching this episode, I believe we were told that Brainiac's liquid metal took over humans to get minerals out of them up and did this so many times that he took enough human hosts to extract enough minerals to create an entire body for himself.
But this doesn't make sense. Brainiac in the past was able to shapeshift as he did in this episode. But normal minerals found in humans can change shape like that and become liquid metal under normal conditions (not without some heating/melting). I have no doubt that Brainiac was composed of a special Kryptonian metal that had properties where it could change shape and flow freely as if it were alive. There's no way terrestrial minerals could act like that. That little black ooze that we saw flowing didn't have enough matter to form those probes that he injected Dax-Ur with.
I still think that before Brainiac is shown shapeshifting again, he should be forced to re-energize the remainder of his original form, i.e. the black ship. A good plot would be for him to find the remaining pieces of the power source that Clark heatvisioned in Zod and use them to power the ship to extract Kryptonian metal to replace his actual body. This would make the most sense.
I could probably suspend reality and believe that there was enough black ooze to form those probes, but we should definitely see him using the rest of the black ship to recreate his original body & material of composition.
