View Full Version : Romance in Smallville
Does anyone think that all the romance episodes lowers the quality of Smallville? don't get me wrong, I love smallville.
I've been hearing that people want clark and lana together. or clark and chloe. or pete and lana. Does anyone think that all this romance could turn smallville into another soap opera...or even worse...another lois and clark.
Remember magnetic and obession? need I say more?

i understand what you are saying, but the WB is notorious for having the teenage drama series. all i can say is that its not as bad as Dawsons Creek. *cringes* i hated that show....

I have no problem with romance ... but badly-written romance is pretty annoying to sit through.
Smallville is a good show. But the mandatory half of every episode that has to spent with Clark and Lana making stupid faces at each other just makes it a pain in the butt sometimes.
I don't think it's the romance that kills it for me. It certainly is the lack of completion in any romance Clark is involved with. Nothing even takes off. I swear the wb needs to do some more research on the issue. What worked initially isn't working now. If Clark's gonna hook up, get it over with and explore that area. It's gone from being a tease to being a big waste of time. If they would execute it with any type of integrity it would work. Somehow, I'm not blaming the writers. I don't think they're allowed to execute things properly. It's more than likely that they are advised to tease the audience. If that's the case, it's sad that the ones with power are the ones without a clue.

i agree whole hartedly. its not the romance its the writing of the romance. tptb have all the power and its up to them. i just hope that they dont recruit the burnt out writers from Dawson's Crack to help with the writing of Smallville
I think all the romance definitley lowers the quality of the show. I like it when its more X-files-esque. I want to see how all these people face adversity, not who's pining for who. :)

Smallville is about Clark Kent in his high school years (and hopefully beyond that???) and as irritating as it is to watch unresolved romances on the show, I would venture to say that romances are very much a part of high school. I don't really have a problem with romance on Smallville as long as the major focus is on Clark and his journey to become Superman. I think oftentimes Smallville has fallen back on the romance angle to pull in ratings, but the most intriguing episodes in my opinion are the ones where a little piece of mythology is revealed.

I don't know why all the romances on Smallville have to end in homicide.

Uhm... in fact I always felt this show was all about romance, most of it is about Clark and Lana and their troubled and doomed relationship. I always perceived it that way so, not having greater expectations for it, no, I don't mind all the romance.
I mean, this show won't be a milestone for Superman mythos, It will come and go and the real Supes line will remain untouched by it.
Hey, I Liked Lois and Clark :p

I don't think that the romance kills this show. I agree that they could have been written better, but I acutally think they are necessary. Romance has always been an important part of the Superman mythos. Even in the first comic from 1938 - Clark asks Lois on a date. Clarks affections have been a determining factor in what he does in all versions of Superman. And I for one enjoy it usually, but I must admit in this show that it is more trouble that it's worth. I feel depressed that Clark in Smallville can never win and he is alone and unhappy. I like that Dean Cain's Clark from LnC was satisfied and happy most of the time.

Life is difficult. That was the first line of the book The Road Less Travelled. No one said that going through the teen years was going to be easy. The fact that Clark doesn't always win and he has periods of lonliness and unhappiness is part of the maturation process. Right now his happy caterpillar days are over and he's in the cocoon stage (in the dark all alone). Then after this period he'll emerge and be a beautiful butterfly (or Superman).
I think this is what makes the show popular. Clark Kent is gorgeous and right now he feels insecure. He goes through all the same teenage angst and emotions that everyone goes through.
High school is difficult for a lot of people; there can be a lot of pettiness, superficialness, and some spend most of their time trying to be someone or something they're not to be popular or please others instead of themsevels because they're too afraid and insecure to let people in.
What's interesting is so many adults aren't even authentic on first dates.

i think it's nessesary to have as every single person likes a boy/girl and if you just had a show about clark running around all the tym it'll be a little bit boring

Some of you guys have a great sense of humour....the homicide joke is funny....LOL
I agree with Lozalauren and jmf 1. Whether you agree or not, I think the romance add a sense of realism to the show. We are human beings after all and love is one of the most important "expression" in the human experience.
If you think about it, all great epics have great romances eg Arthurian myths, the Odysseus for example. Therefore I don't think Superman, one of the most famous modern icon should be any different.

Exactly. Like it or not, you can not tell a story about a boy in high school without telling the romance angle. Like you, I love the episodes that reveal a little bit of the mythology that is to come, bringing us one step closer to Superman. But, we need to know the "boy" that becomes the man, even if that includes his romantic trials and tribulations.

:)
There has to be some romance in Smallville that's what sells on tv, the women want to see love scenes, torn between scenes etc.
A lot of teenage couples have up and down relationships like Clark and Lana, one minute they're together then they're not, then......
Romance is Smallville is a must from a girls point of view.

I Love this analogy! I'm thinking of using it as my signature... I'm gonna post it in the Clark thread!

I don't mind the romance, I simply can't stand Lana. Whenever I re-watch some episodes, I fast-forward whenever I even have a hint that she exists. And that comment on homicides was so true haha.
