Let's see, he has a clone of his brother in place as Editor and Chief of the Planet, his two biggest thorns in his side - Chloe and Lois - in Grant's employ...how long did we have to wait till he got his claws into the paper to prevent any scandalous pieces about him being published? This is now typical comic book Lex Luthor, people! He did the EXACT same thing a few years back in the books, only this is the opposite. In the books he sold the paper back to Perry White in return for Lois keeping her mouth shut about his involvement in the Imperiex fiasco (see OUR WORLDS AT WAR TPB), and here in Smallville he buys the paper to prevent a story from being released.

Yeah, I thought of the Imperiex thing right away. I love that we're really getting comic Lex now.

Always knew Lex had owned the Daily Planet for awhile in the comics so it was only natural that he would own it on Smallville

I have a feeling she'll get either fired or something worse for not willing to cooperate with him, because that whole "time to get rid of Planet's deadwood," that he said to his assistant just screams foreshadowing to me.
I just know that he'll toy with both Chloe & Lois now that he's the owner.

Wait until Chloe finds out! I wasn't surprised because what's the best way to hide secrets that could be written about you. Just buy the press! It's interesting Milton Fine talked about Lex Luther at Clark's university and his impact on SV characterized as evil and such. The Luther's owned the plant( experiments could be done), Talon, the DP, the cops..

Lex always gets his hands on The Planet somehow, so it's unsurprising. But it also always makes for really good stories and it's gonna be crazy bad for the characters for a while.

More than just that-- Lex has owned it a lot of times in the comics.

Is the Planet the only paper in Metropolis? In today's world print media is, indeed, dying off due to the Net being a quick and easy way for news/etc (heck, I still prefer a real paper on a Sunday with some great coffee!). But Metropolis is a big city, if there is another paper, why wouldn't they also have reason to have a staff that would go after the alledged shady dealings of a Luthor?

Well, the Daily Planet isn't the only paper in Metropolis, but here's the thing. The Daily Planet is like The New York Times. It's office is in NYC, but doesn't cover too much news from within city-- more national and international stuff. Same with the Daily Planet.

The New York Post, on the other hand, is pretty much the city newspaper, covering news in the city and state.

In Metropolis, the city paper doesn't have one canon name. Sometimes it's Star, Post, Dispatch.

Lex owning the planet is a good thing. then we can get away with trash reporters like this Lois Lane. tell her to go back to middle school and take English classes. golly, her character is done completely wrong!

Talk about a broken record, he did this with the Talon. My question is how is he going to keep track of everything going on. I think Lionel said one time he was slipping up.

Because businessmen, like Rupert Murdoch or Warren Buffet, own so much, they don't do it all themselves-- therefore, they hire executives who report to the CEO.

I have to admit to being confused by this whole Lex owning the planet now thing.

I thought the Luthor's owned it ALREADY!! I thought Lionel owned the planet then when Lex took over all of Lionel's assets he took control of it. I thought that was how Lionel managed to swing Chloe her internship at the Daily Planet and similarly how Lex got Grant the editor's job. Oh well, show's how much I know!!

Well obviously Lex already had some influence on the DP, otherwise how did Grant got the Editor position?
I thought that after Grant's death, we'll finally get to see Perry White coming to the DP and taking the job, now I don't know how it'd be possible.
