The last time I had so many different people tell me I just HAD to read a particular book it was Harry Potter. After the mom next to me during the elementary school Halloween parade asked me if I had read Twilight (the fourth person to ask me that this month alone) I put it on hold at my local library. I was like number 532. I got the book this week and had read it within 12 hours.
It was one of those "can't put it down" books. And though there was not one bad word, one inappropriate comment or illusion, in spite of the fact Edward and Bella don’t hardly even touch each other the whole book, it was totaly erotic.
Now I'm waiting for New Moon, hopefully it won't take as long to come in.
What are your thoughts about the Twilight Series?

I love the series, and you are definitely right, they are the kind of books you can't put down.
I've read New Moon already, and it was very good, but I think I like Twilight and Eclipse a little better.
According to Stephanie's website, they are trying to get a movie in the works for Twilight...I am definitely going to see that when it comes out.

They've been talking about the movie for a while now. I have read the books, not for pleasure, but for work...and they're pretty interesting for younger readers in my opinion, but I do believe many people would enjoy the series.

I have read all three. I loved them! I can't wait until August for the fourth book to come out. I'm also really looking forward to the new Twilight movie that is coming out. When we went and saw Indiana Jones, they showed a preview for it, it looks good!
I saw on a different website people talking about who Bella should be with, Edward or Jacob, I thought the discussion was kind of interesting. Any thoughts out here on Ksite?

Good for you! I think that's awesome. Do you mind if I ask how come you haven't read the books yet? (It took me a while as well before I read any of these. My daughter had been telling me about them, kept saying she thought I would like them too, but I never had the time.:( Last summer I read Twilight and was hooked!)

Only a few more weeks and "Breaking Down" will be out! I can't wait to read it.
Just started reading these books and I think they are pretty good. I kinda keep hoping that a line will be crossed then remind myself there is only so far the author will go because it's really a young adult read. Overall though, it's an interesting storyline.
I'm onto the second book - New Moon right now - about half done. They are quick reads for me - so should be done with all the books before the movie comes out :)

9 days to go, so excited - even though i'm sure it's bad news for jacob.

1, 5 and 9 are my favs so far :)
I thought that EW RUINED poor Edward on the cover. He's got wayyyy to much makeup on. But the photos inside were nice.
I am actually looking forward to Stephanie's next project - which is Twilight from Edward's point of view as opposed to Bella's. Called Midnight Sun (http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/midnightsun.html).
I like 9 :) You know, I guess I'm one of those 'bloodsucker-lovers' because at times I find Jacob annoying - maybe because he seems so needy lol..... they guy who plays him in the movie is adoriable though lol - I must say, I didn't do him that justice in my mind - Edward was always the 'hot' one hehehe
Anyone read the new book yet? I wanted to finish the third book before starting the fourth.

I just finished reading this today and I must say I LOVED IT!!
I don't want to give anything away, but for me this was just what I wanted from this series! Somethings I was a little floored with here and there but over all this was just amazing.
I'm going to reread it again. It was just an emotional roller coaster for me, but I loved it!

I'm really reluctant to read this series. I've looked at the cover and fondled it both at the bookstore and library but... I can't quite manage to take it with me. *sigh*
I was REALLY into Anne Rice in early teens and so... I'm skeptical and reluctant to rewind.
Everything I hear is really enthusiastic and positive...

Well, this series is no Anne Rice but it's cute, semi-dark and whimsical and I like the characters. Except sometimes Jacob gets on my nerves. I was never a fan of needy guys lol.....
It's more along the lines of Harry Potter, written for teens but adults can enjoy it too. If you're hoping for it to go totally darkside like a lot of Rice's books...that's not going to happen - but you always have your imagination :)
Some people think it's not positive and that it's really encouraging bad behavior and being an extrovert but it's not like that at all - but people see what they want to see. I think the book is pretty positive.
I think you should give it a try and see if you like them. They also have the books-on-tape if you're into it - Orrr.... you could wait to see the first book as a movie in Dec. (although they did change a few things :)
I just finished "Breaking Dawn", GREAT conclusion!
I sure hope so lol! I don't know what's going to happen at this point. Still halfway through book 3.

well edward got on my nerves most of the time - i was never a fan of overbearing guys. i think the reason i liked jacob so much is that i also was reluctant to see bella give up her humanity.
i do feel like everything just fell into place for her, but i don't mind much - it was a great story.
Some people think it's not positive and that it's really encouraging bad behavior and being an extrovert but it's not like that at all - but people see what they want to see. I think the book is pretty positive.
i don't think the book is positive. i think it covers mature topics that some people might otherwise not wish their children to be reading. whatever the case, if they're that concerned, maybe they should be reading and then approving what they want their children to read - or talk to them before hand about the subject if they don't want them to formulate their own opinions on the matter (or have someone else's forced upon them). i think parents are too quick to put the blame elsewhere.
i don't care what age you are, people should not be making any decisions based on what they read in a book, watched on tv or played in a video game. i feel it's common sense. this is all IMO, of course. i'm not trying to rag on anyone, so please don't take offense if you don't agree...

hmmm... needy Jacob vs. overbearing Edward..... who to choose lol. I think that Edward was perceived as overbearing because Bella did so many stupid things to cause him to react. Although I do agree with you that it would probably drive me NUTS having a guy be all in my face like Edward or Jacob for that matter.... space is good.
but I guess I'm more of an Edward fan because of certain things that he would do or how he was described. Jacob was just played up to be more immature and I guess that is why I didn't relate to him too much - he was too high school lol..... yeah, I know, it's a teen book so he would def hit the target audience lol! ;)
I actually had the mindset that Bella wasn't normal/human from the getgo so I guess I had already accepted the possibility of her being a vampire and that she wasn't loosing that much humanity because she never really embraced humanity anyway.

well, when I say positive - I mean in respect to the book being totally negative - not that it was a positive roll model or an up-beat book. I guess I should have clarified. I do agree with you about it covering some mature topics - even inbetween the lines and not outright spoken. I also agree (although I'm not a parent yet) that some parents (and sometimes other people as well) are too quick to blame something else instead of turning that finger around.
overall, the books are an interesting story but it's fantasy and so it's not really designed to teach you a lesson but to draw you into their world. If you do learn something then it's probably more-or-less something you personally took from the book or concluded from the book.... imo anyway.
I always say - read it or watch it for yourself and come to your own conclusion. Yeah, other's recommendations are great but in the end, your own opinion will tell you whether you're into something or not. :)

OK guys. My friend loaned me her copy of Twilight and you were so RIGHT!
It WASN'T Anne Rice thank goodness. I love Anne but one Anne Rice is ENOUGH.
Twilight was so character driven. It wasn't cheesy at all. It somehow managed to be fresh and new. And I'm a Anne Rice, Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan so that's saying a LOT. I fell in love with Bella and Forks and Charlie and the routine before it even really got into the whole Vampire thing. :D
Her writing is so clear and light and easy to read. It's not at all heavy handed. It was not at all EMO. Oh I was so afraid it would be EMO. And the TWIST! My heart was in my throat. So thrilling.
I've gotta say that though Edward is deliciously intoxicating I love Jacob too. I'm eager to read the next one. :D
I'm so happy to be wrong.
:) I'm glad you found that you liked Twilight.
To me, the first three books are a trilogy and the last book is just the icing to complete the cake.
I'm almost done with the last book - it's driving me crazy that it's taking me so long to finish it because I'm usually a fast reader - but life gets in the way sometimes :)
So far though, I don't hate the book. A little unbelievable at times but so far nothing that makes me scream I hate this book or anything.

A guy in the group I went to Australia with last month was reading the fourth book, it looked interesting, so I started thinking about picking up Twilight. I've been getting more and more into vampire fiction recently.
Then pretty much everyone I've talked to (including apparently the people in this thread) who have read the series are...uh.. of the feminine gender.
So.....really, is it considered more of a "chic-series" (regardless of the answer, I'll still be reading the first one at least, I'm just curious.)
Hey, check this site out http://www.twilightguy.com/ - there are other guys out there reading it ;) And she is currently writing a new book that is Twilight from Edwards perspective. First chapter is online http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/midnightsun.html

Ok, so I finished BD and you know what - I really liked it. Yes there were some things I might have changed but overall I did like the book.
People are complaining about the lack of fighting and the lack of a big show down - here's how it is - SM is not a fight-writer, if you notice in ALL her books, you never really read in in-depth fight scene except a few fragments here and there and if you think about them.....most of the fighting is not for you to read but in your mind of what you think happened. She wrote what she knows and what she has been writing, family, love, and she gave her book a happy ending.... I think she ended it well but could have spent less time on the Volturi but I wanted more about Edward and Bella's life with the little one in the end.....
However, that being said - I still enjoyed what little I got from Edward and Bella's storyline. I did enjoy Bella as a vampire, she did change but she was still herself and the fact that it only strengthed her bond with Edward made me smile. Yes it was strange for Jacob to bond with their kid but at the same time it made sense so that everyone was happy. In a way, SM was dropping hints all through her books that this would happen in the end.

Well.... as I've said I loved the first book. The second started off wonderfully but lost me at the end. I don't know if I'm going to read any more of them. This post contains minor spoilers for those who haven't read the first two books.
I don't regret reading the books. The series as a whole is very creative and interesting. I love the way the hum drum world of a small town collides with the supernatural world. There are several things that delight me that result from this merging of a boring small town with these majestic supernatural beings. Vampires playing baseball and a pack of werewolves eating muffins... *giggle*
But Bella and Edward are just too melodramatic for me. I guess I'm just too old for their romance. And I ADORE Romeo and Juliet don't get me wrong... I'm a romantic... it just got a little too gooey toward the end of New Moon.
I love the contrast between the werewolves and the vampires. The Vamps are so dignified and graceful. The way they live is very posh and refined. Then you've got the Wolves who are... on the opposite end of the socioeconomic spectrum. They have a much more working class culture. Their reception is warmer... more down home, more casual than the Vampire reception.
I appreciate the richness of the world she created. It's not easy to do something that feels new and original with this subject matter.
But Bella and Edward are just too melodramatic for me. I guess I'm just too old for their romance. And I ADORE Romeo and Juliet don't get me wrong... I'm a romantic... it just got a little too gooey toward the end of New Moon.
not really spoilers but possibly for people who haven't read the books....
hehe - yeah, gooey romance is just not for everyone. I liked it but at the same time I can see where you're coming from. I also felt at times that the book lost me just because it was talking to a younger audience. I was never the 'puppy dog eyed love sick girl' in high school so it's a tad hard to relate sometimes. But at the same time I liked the whole idea of finding your other half...as someone who's still looking I like having that hopeless romantic bit about the book. And I'd be lying if I told you the romance goes away - it doesn't - it does get sidetracked by other things and the last two books have other drama that is not romance related that helps to not make it a straight romance book. To be honest you might like the last book best because it's not as gooey and Bella really matures. At least you gave it the ol' college try to see if you liked the books :)

I'm a huge romantic... so... it's not that. I loved the first book which was full of romance. But... the ... I guess everyone in this thread will have read the books so...
The Romeo and Juliet reenactment was a bit much.

I do agree. I personally was more interested in the vampire culture and the werewolf culture than the love story. But by the last book I did care a little more about the love. Although the love story was the series' main focus - don't get me wrong I'm a hopeless romantic myself so I did dig the love story (especially between the supernatural and the semi-normal) - but at times it was a bit much.
That's why I'm looking forward to when she finally puts out Midnight Sun - which is the first book from Edward's point of view. She's only got one chapter done but already I find his story more appealing. [shrug]

Well, the fourth book has a whole section just on Jacob and the wolves - his pov is funny. Although I think I could read a whole book just from Edward's pov and from Jacob's pov.

I am so happy there is a thread for the Twilight series.
I absolutely love it, and was hoping there were people from the KSite community who were also fans. I am so glad there are!
Here I am, anxiously awaiting the release of the Twilight movie.
---which by the way is being released three weeks earlier (November 21, just in case someone hadn't heard about this yet).
If you're excited about the movie too, and don't mind being a little spoiled, you can check out this clip. I think it's a rough cut, and will look a lot smoother on the big screen, but it's a nice treat while we wait in the mean time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpoy6prmlbw

Yay! i was looking for a spot to discuss Twilight! Guarentee i will be back lol ;)
^^ :) :) :)
I just got done reading what SM had finished of Midnight Sun and I have to say that I really really enjoyed it - minus her reusing the same words over and over and misusing them in some places etc - but then I take into account this was a draft and wasn't meant to be read before it had been edited.
Since it go leaked online SM doesn't think she'll be finishing it any time soon or even at all - which is disappointing because I really enjoyed things from Edward's point of view. Actually I really wish the whole series was from his point of view. :)
If you haven't read it then I would suggest you take a read -SM posted the draft on her website (http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/midnightsun.html).
I would love to have companion novels to the whole series from his point of view - it fills in sooooo many blanks and wonders.

I totally agree with you, Midnight Sun is a wonderful read so far....(btw, I'd love to read the meadow scene from Edwards point of view ;) )
I would also love to read the meadow scene. I'd also like to read about what he thinks about while she sleeps. Sure there's fanfic but it's a bit different coming from the author :) - And some details about the kiss.....whooooo.... hahahaha

Love the avis! :) After reading the first few chapters for Midnight Sun, I really hope she releases the rest of the book someday. Edward is my favorite character, so reading things from his perspective is definitely interesting. I could seriously never get tired of reading these books. Which is so incredibly weird for me. LOL

I hope she releases it too - I found it so much more interesting. I put some more avi's up - thanks for the compliment :)
That is why I'm looking forward to the movie though - because it seems like they did incorporate some more of Edward and the Cullen's into the story - and not just focused solely on Bella. Should be interesting.

I read the first Twilight book about a month ago and I decided against letting my daughter read it. After telling her my objections, she didn't want to read it. I had read so much about moms and daughters reading them together, that it piqued my interest.
In the books, Edward looks 17 but in actuality is really much older and he treats her that way. He controls her a bit. (Tells her that she can ask some questions, and then she must answer all his questions.) You find out later in the book that he stalked her before they were an item. The girl lies to her dad, and this guy doesn't object. And they spend an entire evening laying in her bed - nothing happens (yea, that's realistic). But I got the feeling that because he was sooo much older than her, he had a distinct advantage over her in the relationship. He doesn't outright abuse it, but it lays a foundation that he could possibly exploit later. (He doesn't seem to want to do that.)
I didn't like that the book was geared to younger readers and they might not get that, and accept that type of behavior in real life. I felt like any girl reading this book should be aware of that.
I used spoiler tags in case someone is coming here and hasn't read the first book, I know unlikely, but it wont hurt....

A follow up to the above post, and hope Atomic girl doesn't mind. :)
I agree on this post not because I'm an Anti-Twilight mother, but because these books truly were never geared at tweens and teenagers. The context and themes are rather complex yet underdeveloped and have gone through countless ethical inquiries. I suggest to many (basically a counselor here!) that they refrain from reading such books revolving around such themes before they fully understand these themes to their own terms before being driven in fantasy-modem. Fiction is not reality, and many of the themes in the book are based upon reality and not cordially or directly developed, causing confusion among readers. Not bashing the book here even though I may sound like it, I just advise many of you ladies and gentlemn here to advise your friends and families to get a head start on the topics the book revolves around before plunging straight into it. Judgment control and slip choose, guys.
Topics discussed heatedly among neutral/anti/twi debaters revolving around the book is as followed, and once again, I am not bashing the book. I am just throwing my two cents into the bucket of thoughts. Put in spoiler tags for those who haven't read yet.
1. Feminism. AKA, the damsel in constant distress theory.
2. Pedophilia. AKA, Edward being 100+ and Bella being 17.
3. Necrophilia. AKA, Edward the dead man sleeping with Bella the living.
4. Mental Abuse and Controlling. AKA, Edward's behavior at times towards Bella.
5. More Mental Abuse. AKA, The Jacob Black being possesive theory.
6. Religious Subtext. AKA, SMeyer's Mormon beliefs got in the way.
7. Dependence. AKA, Bella's behavior in New Moon.
8. True Love. AKA, what exactly is true love? As never fully deciphered in the series.
9. Fanstasy vs. Reality. AKA, Edward Cullen is not real and/or there's someone out there like him.
10. Vampiric Mythology. AKA, where did it derive and will this interest you to read further into the lives of the undead.
11. Societies within Societies. AKA, The humans vs. the vampires vs. the werewolves
And that's all I could find right now.
And guys, I placed the topics as a guide for the young ones who have yet to read the books. IMO, they can be misleading just like any other book in the world, and it's actually a good idea to know before hand what's the main theme before getting a surprise whilst reading. Like a genre thing, if you like horror, you expect horror, not fluffy clouds and Cupids. Same with this book, I think it was misplaced genre-wise.
Again, I am not bashing the book.

Just finished the final book. I read 2-4 in two weeks. The books not bad. Its lucky the SMs side characters save the story. Bella is a needy selfish beyatch. Edward is an uninteresting controlling pain. Jacob i found alright until the way he made fun of sick Mike in the cinema. His character was almost unsaveable from then on. I think he called him the "funny short guy" as if its an insult. Much rather be short and funny than dumb, tall and hairy.
Alice wonderful. Emmet hilarious. Jasper interesting. Seth cool. The volturi make neat bad guys even. Heck even the new little adition in the final book (you know what i mean) was also a great character. The late introduced vampire clans where also great.
To sumarise. Uninteresting romantic story arcs. The side characters save the book from itself.

You bring up some extremely significant points there even though I do like the books in general (not so much the last one though).
What worries me the most, is what you touched on with #9.
I don't know if you'd heard this, but I'd read that (and this was during some promoting for the film) that some woman came up to Robert Pattinson and supposedly handed him a baby asking him to pretend like he was "biting" it but not really. This came from Robert himself, and he refused, thoroughly shocked. I've read lots of other things like that.
When I was in line for seeing the movie, I heard girls call Robert "Edward" when they were talking about Robert himself, not the books or the film.
I started researching the paranormal at age 12, I started with your basic ghost stories and as I got older, researched things like vampires, werewolves, the Jersey Devil, etc. I feel like, reading all that I have on these things, I understood vampires very well when I read the Twilight series, much more so than I would have had I known nothing and just picked up the books at random. How they are portrayed is key, because if one were to research, they'd find that Bram Stoker's vision was a dangerous creature who seduced women and also killed at whim, a monster, not something you fall in love with. That's the danger in it all, the romanticism of vampires, dismissing the fact that if they really existed say, like in Anne Rice novels, it'd be the total opposite.
It's a good thing those types of vampires don't actually exist or well, we'd have a major problem.

Yes, and this is what I've feared from young children all my life. I have two majors, one in child psyc. and one in business. I've worked at a rehab centers for well over a decade, and have seen things happen to young children because of specific things like this. Books like Twilight, Harry Potter, etc can do things to a kid's mind. And I don't mean it in a bad way either, neutrally, it has it's effects. Include mass media attention and cute boys and girls portraying these characters, and you have yourself one fantasy that will forever be a fantasy. I remember the old days when a book was JUST a book, and a movie was JUST a movie, or a freakin' chocolate bar which was just that, a chocolate bar; and the effects were personal to us. For example, the Anne Rice books. I read IWtV when I was 12, and fresh into secondary school. They became part of my life, and back in the late '80s, it wasn't that big of a deal. It was just one other book at the coffee shop that mattered, not in a sense that I'd actually go off chasing young blonde men that resembled Lestat de Lioncourt.
But now, the things that hit us close to our hearts, are becoming media flocks. I tell you this now, statistically, if the Twi-books never hit movie!verse, it would just that one other books that would effect you close to home. I've always differentiated between the liking of a something because it mattered us, and the liking of something that mattered to someone else. t's basically an epidemic, peer pressure to be exact. The influence is so heavy, it just can't help but spread, spread until it can spread no more and the idea of infatuation and obsession comes into play.
As for the biting babies? There was this clip on Tyra (oh my Dean, it's on youtube!) that said that some 40 year old tried to rub up against that sixteen year old kid trying out for the werewolf part? That's not normal, in fact, it's dangerous. Look at what's happening around us!
As for the back-up drop of history on the paranormal; I've been an avid follower of the unearthly all my life. And yes, I do believe there are beings out there much stronger and a lot more mysterious than humans. And that includes the concept of vampirism, lycanthropy, and witchcraft. You have to admit, all fiction comes from something real, that's where the idea of fiction itself derives from. Sure, we use excessive hoopla to make it more interesting, but all in all, there's always that one true thing out there you're missing. And I think maybe out there, a real bloodsucker might be out there, and boy, is he pitying the media.

Twilight was the best, New Moon is boring without Edward. If I wasnt so in love with Robert Pattinson I wouldnt even go see the movie.

I hate the last book. It was completely ridiculous.
I was disappointed with the end of the series. I loved the last book, but I think she could have ended it a little better.
I liked aspects of the last book but some of it was just very up in the air and work-aroundish. To me, from reading the books, she cannot or chooses to not write detailed fight scenes. So the build up to the end only to get what we got was disappointing but at the same time expected. I enjoy the aspects of the books, the characters, and where my imagination can run with the ideas. But as a writer, I felt SM was severely lacking what a lot of skilled writers have in regards to writing style and word usage. However, I would say I enjoyed reading the books because the characters were interesting. I just wish and hope they'd use Alice and Jasper more in the next movie - they are some of my favorites in the books.
I still love Midnight Sun the best and I do hope she finishes it some day. I liked reading things from Edward's pov. I found it so much more interesting than Bella's pov. :)

The last book doesn't exist for me. It was way too happilly ever after, and very anti climatic.
I had to struggle to get through it after they returned from Isle Esme.
Jacob's POV was surprisingly the only part I really enjoyed reading.

It really was. :D

Nessie who?

That came totally out of the blue. Bella never even wanted to be a mother.
And as soon as Nessie was conceived, Edward was basically abandoned.

I agree - Midnight Sun and Edward's point of view is just so much more interesting than Bella's. I am a fan of the Twilight series because of the characters - they're very interesting, and I learned to care about them - but in terms of writing, Stephenie Meyers is no Harper Lee... but I still enjoy the books, so I guess she did something right.
