Figured he'd cut off his finger, get his powers back, then he could reattach it or something. It would have been cooler than the cave portal we didn't get to see.

I am swallowing all logic and assuming that the Kryptonian metal absorbed the heat from the grinder (if you have ever used one of those you know what I mean) and not burned the heck out of him.
Even so, if it were not cutting the metal, there would have been no sparks at all.
So, I am doing the whole suspending logic thing for the scene.
