man, that sucks that they didn't have a photoshoot....

dont they just edit stuff out from episodes or promo pictures. they may not have had a cast picture but i dont think they went to other seasons and got the pictures. i mean clark and lex always look like that. i bet someone can find atleast 100 pictures or something of each of them that look pretty much the same.

either way i think this box cover is better then the rest. the other seasons had just a flat background but this one has the buildings at night with lights on and the daily planet so theres alot more going on in the background

Looks awesome, but is anybody else wondering why they removed the "The WB Presents" banner usually adorning the cases?
Not to mention, what color is that? You guys keep saying it's red, maybe it's my monitor but it looks pretty pink to me.
superhippie2000
06-01-2006, 05:25 AM
huh good point it doesnt have the wb presents on it and i looked at my dvds and they have it. maybe it will be on the real versions cause pictures can be changed a bit last second if needed but ya maybe they think by this season youi should get the point of who releases it. unless they cant say wb presents cause the wb presenting is now the cw presenting. cause the wb is the station they refer to and the wb production company is different.
and u may want to check ur monitor cause its like dark red like maroon like the color of clarks jacket.

well, it's probably because it aint the Wb anymore, it's the CW. or like someone said, it will be on the actual prints, it just isnt on this released picture.

Yeah that head shot was from S4 promos which were taken before S4 started. That was lame. Clark doesn't even look like that anymore. They just maniped the body. *raspberries*

yes I'm not too fond of that pic of tom either :\
he seems like he's grown so much since then....I know he's 29 but it seems like his face has matured even more from season 4 to season 5....i think they should've used a newer one.

they could have used a newer one if they had 25 bucks in there budget for film and getting it developed.

Heh...fun story......but not for me.
I recently went to go exchange out my Season 2 and Season 3 DVD sets because the discs kept falling out. Granted I got these a long time ago, but the Target near my house will take just about anything back without a receipt, so I thought I'd try.
I showed the woman behind the counter the issue and they were more than happy to even-exchange them. I went and grabed two brand-new box sets of S2 & S3 DVDs. I asked If I could make sure they weren't damaged before I left the store and she was happy to ablidge. So I opened S2 and she opened S3 and low and behold as soon as both of us opened our packages, DVDs fell out onto the floor.
I grabbed two more sets and the EXACT same thing happened. We grabbed ALL the smallville DVDs off the shelf (5 sets of Season 2 and 8 sets of Season 3) and ALL OF THEM had loose discs or were damaged.
Now one could easily believe that a shipment was dropped, however, she had a friend who was a manager at Best Buy (which I dispise), and she called him up to see if they'd just take care of me for a simple even exchange (the stores get full credit for damaged discs evidentally). So I went over there and the drama started all over again.
6 more boxes opened and i *FINALLY* got a decent set of both S2 and S3.
So PLEASE PLEASE WB/CW or whatever you're calling yourself this week....PLEASE do a better job with the packaging on Season 5!
Thank you :).
Moral of the story: Check your box sets if you buy them!!!

ya thats what i hate when there are loose discs. sometimes if its loose a little its fine but sometimes a couple discs pop out and scratch agianst the button of the thing or gets stuck between 2 plastic holders. i agree that they need to figure out a better packing method and its not just warner brothers its anyone who does box sets. those plastic holders suck and they should make a fold out box or slim cases cause those will probably work best. those are packed tighter to push the discs closer and these the discs have room to move more. atleast they arent double sided and overlapping cause those would be worse.

I'm not sure if anyone else noticed/posted about this:
But tvshowsondvd just posted the official press release and they've got the run time for the season at 1012 minutes. That is by far the longest running time of all the season releases. Season 2 is the next closest (988 min.) and it had the leftover Season 1 episode in it. I know that these run times are usually an estimate, but that seems like it is being too generous.
I didn't follow this past season as obsessively as I have earlier ones (too darn busy), but I don't remember any double-length or extended episodes for this season. Season 4 had the extended finale and it still only ran 952 min total. Do you guys remember if they did, or do you think that they are including the vengeance chronicles with the run time. Usually bonus features aren't factored in.
Anyways, nerdy questioning is now over with :)
MidgardDragon
06-05-2006, 05:33 PM
They must be including something in that run time. They could have included an extended episode, though.

thats what they have. im dissapointed that we only get those 2 commentaries and no gag reel. the documentry seems like it will be cool.wish they had a documentry about brainiac and the fortress that would have been cool to.
PaleBlueDot
06-05-2006, 05:55 PM
Only two commentaries? Awww. We need at least 4!!! One at least on Arrival, Splinter, Reckoning, and Vessel. One on Thirst (to explain WTF?) wouldn't be bad either. Pretty weak extras if you ask me. Especially for $60! Now only if they'd release it in HD-DVD or BlueRay!
superhippie2000
06-05-2006, 06:08 PM
ya i know the commentaries suck. im glad its solitude but thirst is only cause of the planet and the only acotr is james marsters which sucks. they really needed one for splinter and lexmas and arrival and atleast oracle or vessel. reckoning has the documentry so i guess that would need commentary. they better have alot of deleted scenes. they better not decide to leave out the mr kenbt in fortress stuff or the lex in brainiacs ship comming out iof the bag.
hd dvd and or blu ray will probably come out a couple months later. i think i read they were going to re release at the end of the year the first 2 seasons of smallville on hd or blu ray. cant remember.

they will probably have a complete series box set when the series is over. you will just need to wait for the HD just a little longer then the normal dvds since the hd dvd p[layers and stuff are new and it will probably take a couple of years for it to all be that way so then they know that 90 percent of epiople have the right players and the right tvs cause its a waste if you dont have the other stuff that will make it look good.

or you can just go to the store or not buy from ebay cause on ebay it takes a long time to process things cause they need to make sure your money is good or whatever and then they have to ship the stuff and it goes thru a bunch of different people i think so thats probably why it took longer.

If you say so, I find this unlikely, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Does it have all the special features that have been listed on previous pages? I don't know that the 100th episode making of has been released anywhere yet, so if that's there then maybe you did stumble on something. Even so, someone probably very much put their job in jeopardy if they managed to sneak out and sell an advance copy.
mynameisanna

nope it doesnt have it. but if i said i cared about it i'd be lying.. im not really a fan of special features except if they're from the harry potter movies lol. now that's where my obsession lies ;)

Ok, they got us all spoiled with season 1, 2, & 3 by giving us SMALLVILLE BLOOPERS. Suddenly, they STOP? None in season 4, and NOTHING planned for season 5 dvd release.
WHY are they DOING this to us?
superhippie2000
06-10-2006, 06:25 AM
season 1 had bloopers? i thought it was only 2 and 3. maybe i have to check agian. anyway i wished they had bloopers. and i wish they had more commentaries too. i just hope they have good deleted scenes like the lex in the spaceship and mr kent in the fortress. maybe they will give us an easter egg with something good. i mean there had to be bloopers opn film at some point cause i doubt with the cast they got they will be completely perfect the whole time and no one cracks a joke or anything. MR had to have done something funny. and what about when james marsters fell in the fortress during the battle scene and he twisted his ankle. i mean its not funny but still a blooper and they must have gotten that on film. and i dont think it cost alot of money to edit together bloopers and upload it on a computer that makes the dvd stuff. bloopers are one thing that they will always have but they arnt using. i understand commentaries and documentries not being on cause they would have to actually record that stuff and find people to do them when they are probably do something else when they arent filming. maybe they can do something at the end of the series and just put out a dvd of nothing but smallville bonus features that they never put on the tv box sets. hey they will mke extra money.

Because it still contains images/words that younger kids shouldn’t be allowed to see/hear – why confuse people with a new system of ratings when you already have a perfectly good one – makes sense!
Even computer games have ratings nowadays too – now that is slightly weird, but still makes sense.
MidgardDragon
06-17-2006, 06:29 AM
But even computer games have a different set of ratings than movies. Slapping "R" on Smallville is like slapping "R" on a MA rated game. ;)
superhippie2000
06-17-2006, 06:45 AM
its not rated r it justs that when they make the pages for amazon.com they use a starter page so they dont have to keep re entering the same data over and over and then they edit the stuff for the product. they just havent changed it to tv14.
MidgardDragon
06-17-2006, 06:48 AM
That was my assumption. Thus "why would" instead of "why did".
superhippie2000
06-17-2006, 08:44 AM
i think i have seen it say rated r for disney movies too. plus if it was a moving rating it probably would have been pg13 i guess. but still we all know what smallville is and ratings dont matter and chances of people who never seen the show will get it is pretty slim. i think the default is r instead of g or something cause g is more likely to get younger people to buy and they may buy thinking its clean while if its r people are more likely to look up to see why its r and to see if its suitable for them to watch.
IloveTomWelling33
06-17-2006, 04:12 PM
My guess is it would be pg13 because nothing really bad is on the show to be rated R.

do all your dvd sets have that little intro/menu??
because i have all seasons on dvd (original) and the only one that has that is season one...the others don't.
i wonder why could that be.
does anyone know?

what u mean intro like the song and the clips leading to the menu cause all the discs have it just season 1 has an intro of just the metor shower stuff. the other seasons have clips from all the episodes or most.
yeah, i don't know why :(
i want that intro..hehe.

Did you happen to buy your DVD's of of eBay for a ridiculously low price? I'm not trying to accuse you of anything, it's a serious question. Lot of DVD's sold on eBay, especially if they are priced low, are bootleg copies someone has likely just recorded off of the TV.

ya if you buy from a person online and not a store chances are you got a fake.

i didn't buy them on ebay..
when i put the disc, it only comes the main menu with a estatic image, nothing more..
MidgardDragon

That is odd. Where did you buy them? Website/store as well as country/state/region, please.
It may be a regional difference, I suppose.
on a store..
i'm from argentina, maybe that's why? but then why season 1 has that intro??
MidgardDragon
06-21-2006, 04:14 PM
*shrugs* I'm going to guess that's it, a difference based on region. I'm not sure why Season 1 has it and the others don't. Maybe they went all out for all regions/countries for the first season, then got lazy on the international releases of the other seasons?
yeah, maybe that's it..
that's a shame, i love the intro..hehe.
thanks ^^

Not all dvd's sold on ebay are bootlegs. It depends upon the sellers you buy it from. I bought seasons 2 and 4 on Ebay, and they all play with intro/clips w/song followed by a menu. I bought seasons 1 and 3 at amazon.com. So far I have success buying from ebay and amazon.
I just saw the rear cover for season 5 box set, and it looks like there isn't going to be gag reel. :-(

Wow. According to the DVD back cover art an astonishing two episodes will have commentary. The Vengeance Chronicles are great, but seriously the extras on the season five set are severly lacking.
I really wanted to see a tour of the FOS and the Daily Planet, but no dice. And the lack of gag reel is pathetic as it doesn't involve sitting the actors down like a DVD commentary or interview and only involves editing. Surely they could have done better than this if they really tried.

You missed the major point of that quote. "off of eBay for a ridiculously low price. Not just "off of eBay." I've bought things off of eBay before too.

If they recorded it off of TV you should be able to tell by the "WB" logo in the bottom right corner. Thats a much easier way of knowing that than look at the price you bought them for. Price doesnt necessarily matter on Ebay. It all depends on how the bidding goes.
So I'm pretty dissapointed in the back cover summary. The mention Aquaman, Cyborg and Brainiac but they don't even mention The Fortress. On top of that they say this is the season where "Clark finally accepts his destiny" Ummm am I missing something here? When did he accept his destiny? Jor-el strips him of his powers which Clark likes and wants! He dies as a human and without having any say in the matter Jor-el brings him back to life and restores his powers. His parents say "it's not easy sacrificing something you love to help others" and the thing is, he didn't sacrifice anything. It's not like when he died he was able to go to the fortress and beg for his powers back so he could stop the nuke.
If Clark had accepted his destiny He would of done a much better job of keeping Brainiac in check. I don't know. I think that is just really wrong. I will feel better though if he FINALLY decides in the season 6 premier to accept the fact that he is a hero and decides to just concentrate on that and hopefully he will accept that fact that he is an ALIEN. I wish he'd just deal with it instead of trying to be normal.

amazon.com has updated the image with the real discs sticking out. unfortunatly we cant tell who is on the discs. the discs are red and the second disc that has lana looks blackish and the fourth looks like someones hand and that would be chloes disc and the last disc that usually has the parents is kind of tanish or something. i dont know if the same people will be on the discs or if they changed some stuff around i guess we will need to wait and see.

Season 4 for the first time had Lionel on there. I'd assume it will be Clark, Lana, Lex, Chloe, Lionel and then the parents again. Who knows, maybe they decided for Chloe and Lois to share a disc or something. Id like to have everyone on the credits on a disc. She is in the credits now so who knows.

I don't know if its been said b4, but does anyone think there should be more special features? I mean, they have only 2 commentaries when I think there should be 15. They should also have a 20 mintue thing to clear up any questions and talk about certain episodes, and behind the scenes, like how they made the FOS. And how Clark flew, and does his super jump, etc.

Well 15 is pretty extreme. I think 3 is fine and we got 2 which is short one, but in all honesty, I'm fine with 2. Commentaries aren't as easy to do as you might think. It's hard to find the time to do them because of the tight filming schedule and when the actors arent working on Smallville, they are usually either working on something else or just spending time with friends and family, which is hard to find time for.
Also, I'm not sure what you mean when you say you want something to explain how he flew and did his super jump. Clark didn't fly in the 5th season and his super jump in Hidden was just that, a jump.
There should always be more special features, but you have to remember that Al and Miles were also busy with the Aquaman pilot and when they weren't on Smallville, they were working hard on that. Some seasons it is just hard to come up with things. I feel that we are lucky just to have it on DVD at all. The only real thing I miss are the gag and blooper reels. Those are great and I dont rally understand why they can't put those on the dvd anymore. Oh well. Overall, as long as I have the episodes in DVD quality with no commercials, I'm a happy camper.

well i would have liked to seen commentaries on solitude arrival lexmas reckoning(but we have a special feature for it so its cool) oracle and vessle. i dont think it matters time wise for doing commentary all they do is sit for 40 minutes talking about there memories of doing the episode. and they dont need to get the same people all the time to do commentary. a kristin and micheal one on lexmas would have been great. they dont even have to do it together they can edit the commentaries together.
by flying and super jump and stuff i think he ment that they should show all the green screen and wire tricks and stuff like that. personally i think they could have done that but i dont mind because all movies that have those type of effects always have the same behind the sscenes stuff when its on dvd. so its not like its something new.
i wish they had bloopers. maybe we will get easter eggs cause they will never mention on easter eggs till the dvd is really close to comming out. i do wish they had a feature on the fortress and the planet but i guess not. the webisodes i think i will enjoy. they may not be the best acting and best grphics and stuff(i havent seen them yet) but its something new and i heard it fills in a few plotholes. im wondering if that superman documentry clip thing on it will be any good. i hope its long cause if its one of those 2 minutes comercials that will piss me off. i also wish they did a little thing about other dc comic book people. i mean look how many justice league people we got and the bad guys too. but we can always get something like that on season 6 dvd.
i wonder when they `season 5 dvd site will go up. they still have it for season 4.

I meant they should do behind the scenes for every season, like green screen effects and animation and storyboards etc. I meant the superjump in Lucy, and in Hidden, and in Reckoning etc. All of those plus all of the other cool effects. I'm sure Superman Returns will have something like that.

Yeah green screen stuff I agree would be cool, but like you said, its nothing new, we know how they do it (similar to the twister effects they used for "vortex" when Kristen had to sit in the fake truck and they just twisted her around and stuff)
I never thought about Easter eggs.
I dont really like commentaries where they record it seperately and edit it together because I like the interaction between the actors/producers/writers, etc. The commentary with Greg beeman, Michael Rosenbaum and a few others was awesome because they were all together in the same room. I remember when they spliced together Allison's comentary with John Glover and it wasnt very good because I wouldve liked to hear them together talking about it, not seperate and then just edited together, its not as informative, and its pretty boring.
Either way, like I said I dont think people realize just how busy these actors are. We think all they do is work on Smallville, but they dont, every break they get they are working on movies or other projects. I mean Tom did The Fog and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 in between Smallville's break and I remember them saying they had to film his stuff for Cheaper very quickly and his shoot was only a few weeks. And also, like I pointed out, they all have families and they need to spend time with them. Sure, its just 40 minutes in a room but that 40 minutes could be easily spent doing other things that are probably a little more important for them, like press for the show, guest appearances, interviews, and family time or films. I remember on the buffy seasons Sarah Michelle Geller rarely did commentary(actually she may have never done one dont remember) just because she had no time.
Id love commentaries with James Marsden and Tom Welling for Splinter and Kristen and Michael on LExmas(together in the same room). But like I said, Im cool with it.
But I just really really want a gag/bloopers reel. : (
I know in Superman returns they cut out the entire scene where they show Superman on the destoryed/in ruins Krypton but they cut it all out for time. I wish it was in the movie, I hear its amazing footage.

ya i agree when the edit together 2 seperate commentaries it sucks cause its funny for them nit pick each others acting and stuff but its still better then nothing.
i think u mean marsters not marsden. atleast james will do commentary it will be nice. i just hope the splinter commentary mentions about if the truck was really a morphed brainiac and if brainiac did actually talk to clark about the truck and he left the rock and message to drive clark even more nuts. cause all of clarks parania stuff was based on stuff that was actually there. like his dad with the money and lionel. he saw it wrong and heard it wrong but lionel did give mr kent info and stuff. also lana and lex were close and lana was scared and clark saw that real stuff but just made up the kiss. John S. should have done commentary on something cause i dont think he ever did and this was his last chance.
i heard superman returns is 2 and a half hours so i guess thats why they cut it out. but be prepared cause they will probably have a extended cut of the film on dvd. maybe they will be nice and the stuff they filmed on green screen of krypton they can give smallville those graphics.

Yeah I meant Marsters, Marsden is the last name of actor from Resevoir dogs and Kill bill 1-2. Whoops
Oh so there is commentary on Splinter? See I didnt know that I knew there were 2 commentaries butr I guess I never knew what they were. Is the other one Thirst?
For Superman Returns, there wont be an extended cut, at least according to Singer. In An interview over at IGN.com they asked him about the Krypton scenes and he said that they werent even in the script, he just decided to write them in cux he wanted to but then the film was close to 3 hours long and so he cut them out. He said that a "director's cut" or extended cut wont be out because the cut in theaters IS the directors cut, because he cut it and thats the cut he feels is the best. But, he sais the krypton scenes will be in the deleted scenes, they just wont be re cut into the film.

lol. I know I know. But seriously, a director has to release the best cut of the movie. Singer obviously has a reason for not putting them into the movie. Who knows what that is but hes got a point. the Director's Cut IS the version in theaters. Thats the cut he likes and we are meant to see. I mea it kinda sucks cuz I want those re edited back in the movie but oh well.

some times i hate deleted scenes cause the scenes that are delted can be better the scenes in the actual movie but i guess since he choices whats in and whats out and is really happy about then he klnows what he is doing. the whole krypton scene could have been short and pointless and in the movie they probably bring it up enough to get the point. could be flahses of it but not the whole thing.
maybe brainiac has destroyed all gag reels to bring chaos to the world. he knows without gag reels we can no longer live in this world and we will kill eachother because of it.

I tried to search & see if this had been addressed before, but I could not find my answer.
I just bought the 4 seasons of Smallville on DVD. The insert (where the discs snap in) of season 2 is clear & the other 3 seasons have background art.
Are all of your season 2 sets also like this? I was just wondering if I had got a defective set. I guess I'm too picky... I like my DVD sets to match :D
Any feedback is appreciated, Thanks

I had to check this one out. And you are right. The S2 are clear and the other seasons have cover art. I never noticed that. I guess thats the way they did it. It can be bothersome when they don't stay uniform on the DVD sets. For instance, I have all 10 seasons of Friends and on the outside binding at the top it says the number of the season except for season 4 which is blank in that spot. Bothersome!

Thanks for comparing your set with me.

Correct, I also noticed this, Release date 28th.
How can this be?... As mentioned above USA would normally get items like this ahead of us, more so due to it being smallville <Episodes out on TV earlier etc>

I recently bought a Smallville box set on eBay wich had seasons 1 - 4, 8 discs for each season. The first 3 seasons seemed fine; when played they looked like the US versions of the box sets.
But season 4 looked like it was recorded off of TV (granted, it looked like it was recorded off of cable, the picture and sound was great). The only menu that came up looked nothing like sets 1 - 3. The box says it was produced for region 3, but it plays on my United States, region 1 DVD player.
Does anyone have any idea whether or not this is a bootleg (I'm pretty sure it is, but I want to be sure)?

well seeing how the dvd sets are 6 discs and not 8 i would have to say they were recorded from tv. unless 8 discs are made somewhere else. someone could have also just copied there own box sets on to new dvs and sold them. maybe you also have a multi region player and dont know it or agian someone just stole a region 3 box.
side note unrelated to smallville. lois durance is going to be in the butterfly effect 2 which comes out on direct to video sometime this fall i think. she is also on the cover.

what you mean behind each disc? like the paper thing betewwn the plastic holders? my paper things show like the smallville logo like it is on the menus screen in the color of the box.
if the actors are behuind there i need to take a closer look

When you open the boxed set and remove, lets say disc 1, behind that clear plastic that held the disc, is a blue background and in the set I have, you have to look close, but you can see Tom Welling's face and it is the same for the other discs that have the actors pictures on them.

I have all five seasons of Smallville on DVD. I recorded each episode from TV and burned the discs on my computer. At first, I was disappointed when I discovered that the discs would not play on my stand-alone DVD player even though they worked perfectly on the computer. Then, a few months ago, we had to buy a new DVD player and I was pleased to see that my home-burned DVDs now play flawlessly on it.
I'm wondering now if I'm missing anything from the commercially-available boxed sets. Can anyone who owns them tell me if there are extra things included in them that would not be available from recording from TV?
I burned each season on 6 DVDs. In order to do that on single layer discs (all commercial discs are dual-layer), I had to reduce them to extra long play, but I swear I can't see any loss of quality from the TV broadcast.

You're missing
a) commentaries
b) gag reels
c) documentaries
d) getting to see the shows without the WB watermarks
e) DVD quality picture and audio

How do you hide easter eggs on a DVD?
MidgardDragon
07-22-2006, 07:27 PM
You put them as selectable bits of the picture on the menu, and don't make it obvious they can be selected. Thus, it's impossible to get to them unless you just happen to scroll across it.
There are other ways as well, this is just the most common.
Jephael

Yea, that's why they're called "Easter Eggs", because you end up having to hunt for them! This also happens quite often in web toons like Homestar Runner!

I am planning to add the S4 DVD's to my collection. At amazon, they are still relatively expensive ~44 bucks (US). But Amazon also links offers from other sellers, going as low as 25 bucks. Supposedly the DVDs are new and factory sealed. That difference seems quite large and therefore strange to me... I really don't want to buy some bootleg crap. Can anyone confirm that these sellers are trustworthy? Thanks.

i say just wait till season 5 comes out and some store should have a sale like buy season 5 get 5 dollars off 1 season 10 dollars off 2 and so on. plus if you wait till november they may have a sale cause thats when superman the movie 4 disc box superman 2 directors cut super man 3 and 4 and superman returns is released and also a giant box set of the first 4 films. they will have sales for superman stuff around then.

The used sellers are usually very very good at amazon.com. I wouldn't hesitate to buy them used, honestly. You might also check around any local used book/movies/games stores you might have in your local area.

I bought all my TV DVDs from either Best Buy, FutureShop, Costco or Zellers (think Canadian version of Target). Best Buy and FutureShop often have clearouts or sales at amazing prices such as buy one DVD episode set and the second is free. Bought all eight seasons of Stargate and the last two of Smallville that way. It seems Walmart hardly ever has deals on their DVD sets so I never buy from them. That's good because I hate Walmart anyway. Zellers sometimes offers half off certain DVD sets and Costco is usually has the best regular price if nothing is currently on sale and you can't wait.
I know Amazon offers great DVD deals from time to time as well, so keep your eyes peeled.
Ebay can be a great place to purchase, but I don't recommend it for first time buyers. It takes a certain amount of savy to purchase on Ebay. Caveat emptor.

Actually that's false on when they do the commentaries. They actually do commentaries throughout the entire season many times ;). They have been for a very long while. Commentaries are done on a strict schedule for a number of reason, and because of it many are done during the season. Some are done after, but some are also done during the season. It all depends on scheduling for the most part, and which episode it is. If it's an early season episode, then those are done during the season. If it's a late season epsiode, then those are done after the filming of the season. It all depends on scheduling, and where the episode is at in the season. They are done during and after.
ETA: Also many special features are done also during the season as well. Depending what it is, but not everything is done after the season is over. Majority of it has already been done since now they want the packaging and shipping done before the new season starts. DVDs are a very organized business in not only film, but also in tv show boxsets.

i just ment that the commentaries cant be done until after the episodes are done. like they dont do commentaries while filming the episode. sometimes i just stick all my knowledge into one thought and it comes out like everything is that way.
ya well alot of special features have to be shot during the filming if its based on filming. just ment that they dont start putting it together for the dvd till the season is done well atleast filming cause thats when they do the whole season on dvd. which is usually around april or something.
different shows are different so i guess depending on timing and stuff then they do it whenever.

Oh, I see. But yea your right they don't do an episode commentary until after it is filmed.

Yes. Some shows are a little bit more organized than others, and other variables go with it.

No need to say sorry. I constantly misread and do typos. Okay, I put S2 dvd just for you ;).
Here is how you get into Tom's Commentary.
"Red"
1)Go to Features on the Main Menu
2)Next you'll notice an arrow pointing at Pete....click it. The arrow is on the bottom.
3)You'll see a cursor will be right next to the word "Red". Click it. Underneath are the actors who are doing the commentary, so you know it's the right commentary.
4)The episode will play on it's own with the commentary on.
"Rosetta"
1)Go to Features on the Main Menu
2)Next you'll notice an arrow pointing at Lex...click it. The arrow is on the bottom. The same place where it was on the "Red" commentary.
3)You'll see a cursor be right next to the word "Rosetta". Then click it. Just like in "Red".
4)The episode will play on it's own with the commentary on.
Hope that helps.

its ok. sometimes i just ramble. i know what im saying but mush everything together. and sometimes i base things on the way south park dvds are made and those dvds are way off balance when it comes to bonus features and making commentaries lol.
i really wish we had more commentaries this season. i was really hoping for a solitude one and a lexmas one. im glad we got splinter tho. and why no commentary on thirst with allison mack doesnt make sense to me. the only reason to have done a commenatary on thirst is to have allison do it. that was a big story line for her cause its when she starts at the planet. reckoning should have had one but seeing how they have a behind the scenes look at it for a special feature then it kind of evens things out. as long as it isnt a 10 minute clip show.

Nothing wrong with a good ramble :). Heck, I get teased here for talking too much in my posts . Hmm.....South Park dvds would be a good example maybe for animated boxsets though. What I base are the articles, interviews, and commentaries on other shows. They all seem to match up. I have no idea how the animated boxsets section works.
I wanted one for "Solitude". That's the thing about commentaries they are just bonus features on a very tight schedule. Either the person is working on a scene and can't make it, or sometimes the actor/actress either have to choose time between their loved ones or do a commentary. If the schedule is after the season wraps up, then it's good chance the actor/actress may not do it. James Marsters is a guest star, and he honestly has the time to do a commentary. He's not as booked as he once was on Buffy/Angel. It's just depends on various variables for commentaries. I have heard creators demanding to do a commentary for a particular episode.

well i know the south park dvds they do it like a few months before the release of the dvd but they dont release them right after the season lets up they are behind like 2 season right now. they do 2 seasons a year so in 2008 they will probably start doing the releases a few months after the season ends. kind of like the simpsons are like on season 18 or something and only at season 8 on dvds.
one good thing about comentaries are they let us know sometimes what the date is of the day they are recording it. movies that have commentaries usually do the commentaries like when the movie is premired. sometimes earlier but since most of the cast of the movie is at the premiere they can all sit down before or after the screening to do it. plus they start doing stuff for the dvds like the same time the movie comes out. that usuallyt when they get the interviews for the dvds cause the actors are on the promno tours and talk shows and stuff.
i wonder how many deleted scenes there will be. i would be really pissed if they didnt put the mr kent dead in fortress scene and the lex in the spaceship scene. maybe they will have a longer scene of the fight in arrival unless that little part was all that was filmed. would be nice to have seen it longer.
superman stuff is going to be really big in dvd sales in like november cause they are release all the superman extended stuff and superman returns and i think another justice league and stuff so all that might boost smallville sales. but i doubt it will help the shows budget lol.

Season 5 will be released on HD-DVD.
No date, price, or details of that kind are available yet, but it was shown on an insert in the S2 DVD release of Veronica Mars.

It makes me hesitate to think that WB's ever gonna make money. :P Considering like you said most people don't have HD-DVD players, they're probably gonna lose money on making HD-DVD sets too. HD-DVD players are probably a good couple of years from becoming common enough to release anything but the biggest blockbusters on them.
superhippie2000

ya the only way you can get a hd dvd is to have an hd dvd player and the only way to get that is have a hd tv or nothing will look good at all. it would just be a normal dvd. i think these hd dvd and blu ray discs should only be for single movies and stuff to see how good they go and see how many people buy the players and stuff. and like you said it should build up for it to become common. also spending the money for 2 versions of a 60 dollar dvd set would be pointless if they cant make the money right away.

superhippie2000
08-16-2006, 04:54 AM
well what i understand it to be is that hd dvd players are made a certian way so they can pick up a bunch of layers and play overlapping stuff. like playing bonus features during the movie and having menu screens pop up during the movie if you wanted them too and stuff. plus it makes everything look better. if you can use hd dvds on a normal dvd player which im not sure about it probably wont come up looking that good and alot of the features you wont get. but you can use normal dvds on a hd dvd player and it will just make the normal dvds look alot better. you also need an hd tv to go with it or it will still look like everything else.
they are seeling normal dvds and waiting a while before releasing the blu ray and hd dvd things but i have seen that they are starting tio release them on the same days now.

I don't know if you guys have already talked about this... but I wonder if the artwork will change for the Season 5 DVD set. Season 5 is the first year where Clark is out of school... So no more crows and and flags and "Smallville High School" logos...

maybe instead of yearbook like pages there will be daily planet style layouts

That'll be a nice change of pace. It's funny when you think about it, but they don't seem to make a big deal about college in this season, save for the fact that Chloe and Lana are both at Met-U

im thinking it will be the daily planet layout of the booklet with stuff on like news articles. or perhaps the fortress and each thing is like a crystal explaining whats on each disc.

there is no difference just the darker color was the origanal art work then they made it blue. on the news page of this site they have the dark red color promoting the dvd but in the news areas it shows the blue cover.
however hd dvd of smallville will have the same cover but the box is red and says hd dvd ontop of it but it doesnt come out the same day.

if you can watch dvds on your computer stick the disc in and let it load then the dvd rom page will automatically show up and ask you what to do but chances are the dvd rom stuff just sends you to websites and stuff like thta.
gloria
08-25-2006, 05:27 PM
those dvdrom stuff never works for me for some reason :\
superhippie2000
08-25-2006, 05:55 PM
do u have a dvd rom on your computer? also dont force the load let it load on its own otherwise it just loads as a normal dvd. plus if the dvds are old then the dvd rom features wont work. it would show the links and stuff but if it needs to load to a website the website might not be there and it wont show up.

I am so lost, what u mean by letting it load normally? And its unfair if its the older seasons I wont have the special features i bought my season 1 in 2004

superhippie2000, I don't know what you're talking about either. Your computer should prompt you to allow the special features to run. It doesn't matter when you bought your DVD, as long as your system requirements are right, then everything should be fine.

08-26-2006, 12:33 PM
well my dvd drive is the latest one and it still doesnt work :\ ...i even installed that software it prompts you to install in order to make it work...
the only one i remember working was one of the earlier dvds S1-3 ..one of them... and the dvdrom feature worked, and didnt i buy them till S4 was on tv...so i dunno..

When they make the final season's dvd they should collect all the articles written by different characters during the entire series and make a special feature The News of Smallville with glipses of different characters and how they think and write about what goes on in smallville and the surrounding area. Anybody have any Ideas of what you think should make it to future dvd releases(season 6 and if we get one a season 7)

well on my dvd player on my computer if you start the program up before the dvd player loads after sticking the dvd in it will be like a normal dvd player but if you let it come up on its own then the dvd rom screen will automatically show up. then it has the dvd rom features but sometimes on the links for them they go to websites that no longer work cause they were only ment for the time persiod of the release.

mine is 2 and a half years old. also it may depend on the program. i use interactual. if u dont let it autoload then the dvd rom features dont show. could be just me but i dont know.

just let the disc load up. and the dvd rom features are usually on the last disc.

i would really like a feature about the justice league. just whatever characters they use on the show and give a little bit of info about them. same with villians. i think the last season should have a documentry with the cast looking back over the years. maybe even get back pete and mr kent to tell about tthere experiances on the show. they should also have something explaining all the plotholes if they dont do it in the show. also maybe get viewer feedbacks of the series what they liked and what they didnt. or maybe just have a thing where they have a list of the best episodes and the list of the worst episodes and summarys of what they were about. and not based on rating based on votes or something.

well the dvd rom stuff should be on the last disc.
other features like commentary and deleted scenes are on each disc that has episodes for those things. all the other bonus features are on the last disc.
i think there is an extra documentry on disc 4 of season 4 but not sure.

Ok my seaosn 5 boxset arrived this morning. I am a bit disappointed at the box presentation. No year book, but I guess they are not a smallville high anymore. PLus the box is ususal a fold out affiar or layered plastic. This time its 3 slim plastic holders and the design on the box is nothing amazing. Slightly disappointed. Not watched any of the features yet though so that might make it worth it

what is the booklet based on? and when u say 3 slim plastic holders are they the same they were in the previous seasons or they smaller. and are the discs still back to back with each other or did they decide to make the discs overlap each other.
wait where do you live? are you in region 1 or reguion 2 cause some things may be different. plus region 2 comes out today.

I'm in the UK and bought the Region 2 version (all my other series are region 1 cause normally that comes out first)
They are 3 seperated cases each holds 2 discs.

o ok so its the same as the other ones in how the discs are in ju8st they made the plastic things a little thinner? which ever what they are in i just hope the stuff doesnt come unglued lol.
we get our dvds in 2 weeks. next week supernatural season 1 comes out so that will keep me busy until smallville.

if i had to guess i would pick
disc one- clark
disc 2- lana
disc 3- lex
disc 4- chloe
disc 5- either lionel or lois
disc 6- mr and mrs kent
thats the way they usually are but im not really sure now that lois is in the opening credits. lois may be with chloe and lionel might just get his own like before. i would be a bit upset if lionel wasnt on the disc.

man i wished they kept lionel. lionel is cool and has a much bigger role then lois this season but o well maybe from now on the will alternate. they said someone new will be in the credits for season 6 and if thats true maybe that dvd will have that person.
cool easter eggs. but damn that they arent for bloopers. go to disc 4 then go to bonus features then there may be a big space somewhere on one of the feature pages if more then one then just go to each link and click up down left right and see if that makes anything special appear.
what is the focus of the booklet? the previous years was like a highschool year book.
