View Full Version : Why did Lana smash the mirror?

Just wondering why did Lana smash the mirror in the beginning. It's like she got mad all of sudden for no apparent reason. Kinda bizzare.

She is about 3 steps away from the deep end. Chippy needs to check her anger issues.

I mean she didn't have a reason to really be angry at that moment. It just seems like she smashed the mirror for no apparent reason.

She was upset that Clark didn't trust her with the powers and told Chloe to watch out for her.

Think of Green Hulk for a second. Green Hulk says to himself: Hulk is MAD. That's exactly wut Lana was doing. Lana is MAD. Gosh she's so sensitive geez. And good thing Lana didn't frustrate it out on Shelby.

She was pissed cause I think she's beginning to see Clark trusts Chloe more than her now, and that pisses her off. When people's lives don't revolve around her, Lana gets upset.

But then she seemed ok with it at the talon? very confusing. I'd say that was unnessary throwing. Also why throw a picture of urself?

Because Lana realizes now that she's not the girl next door anymore. :\ And maybe she thinks that if she was, Clark would trust her more when she had his powers.
At least that's what I got from it.

Yeah, the fact that she was okay with Chloe at the Talon makes it all very confusing. I didn't realize she threw the picture. I thought the picture was on the dresser and was knocked down by whatever she threw at the mirror. I guess she realized that she was no longer the girl in the picture. Funny how Clark still had that picture hanging around. He really loves Lana Lang. He keeps pictures of her from high school in his room? Was that his room? Or are pictures of her all over the house?

She is alittle unstable, there is no doubt about that. I think she has been trying to keep to much to herself and that was more in frustration than anger, but I would say she was upset, I don't think it was all because of what she overheard though.

I confess it would be hard not to go somewhat wacky if I had the powers, it would be so darn hard not to want to appear on Jay Leno just to show off.

I don't think I would go around crunching heads, but it is hard to say for sure.

They did the super hearing effect.
Clark and Lana live together, they should trust each other more than anyone else. It was natural for her to be upset, and infected by green krypto, she let her anger out on an object. By the time she got to the talon, she had cooled off.

She wasn't "OK with it at the Talon," she was in lying/cover up mode again. She didn't want Chloe to know that Lana knew Chloe was guarding/observing. She didn't want either Chloe or Clark to know that she was super-eavesdropping.
I also think she was already thinking about what she was going to do with her powers, that is, going after Lex. And she was pissed off that she would have Chloe tagging around after her, interfering in her plans. At the Talon she was just lulling Chloe's suspicions so she could ditch her.

In looking in the mirror she saw herself for who she's become, and while we may find Evil Lana sexy, she hates herself for not being the sweet girl in the photograph anymore.
That or she still thinks she's a vampire from "Thirst"

i agree with theotherJane. Lana was mad that her boyfriend didnt trust her. she broke Clarks mirrior, that is his room but rearranged it b/c of his girl. sorry getting way off topic. Lana shoulnt be the one mad, she's also keeping the truth from clark.
I thought it was a pretty good metaphor/analogy type thing. She 'shattered' her image as the girl next door that Clark fell in love with ... especially looking at the picture of her and her prize-winning horse right next to the shattered mirror. Shows how so much has changed -- particularly with these newly-gained superpowers -- and that she's not the same Lana anymore.
Too bad she's going to have 7 years of bad luck now, hehe.

i think you guys have it all wrong...i think she just hadn't adjusted to her new strength yet and accidentally broke the mirror....at least thats how it looked to me. yeah, its true anyone can break a mirror, but she wasn't fully in control of her abilities at that point, so it's possible she misjudged. sorry, i know how important it is to some of you to prove that lana is evil :-P
litew8
11-08-2007, 11:54 PM
Maybe it was a metaphor -
Not shattering the image of the girl next door (as mentioned above), but rather - She shattered the mirror of her self revealing that SHE is the one that is shattered (inside). After shattering the mirror, she looked at a picture of herself when she wasn't broken and successful (blue ribbon winner).

lana smashed the mirror because clark didn't trust her with the powers she had and wanted chloe to look after her. The mirror she looked at was broken but the piece she looked at wasn't broken inside per se, but there were grains of shattered glass around the pix with the horse, meaning she is different than what she was back then. You guys need to get your facts straight. I took replayed the episode and saw the whole thing and only a couple of people got it correct.

I don't know why she broke the mirror but it sure was creepy. Maybe she couldn't stand to look at her own duplicitous face.

You all are silly. You look for things that are not there.
She heard Chloe and Clark talking about watching her, she got frustrated.. she was tossing an object just like she was frustrated and because she had super strength it went faster than she expected and broke the mirror. Simple as that.. there is nothing else to find in it, no metephor.. no anger issues.. was an accident. I am sure you all have tossed something a little to hard and it broke.. same thing here. Although I do agree with her seeing the picture and seeing what she used to be.. the fun loving girl who loved to ride horses.

Great answer
The picture represents the past where she was happy and complete
The mirror represents the present where she is shattered and lost

If frustration caused Lana to abitrarily toss whatever at the mirror, the fact that it did shatter should have given her pause. She should have recognized in that moment that she could seriously hurt somebody, unintentionally or otherwise. At the very least, she should have thought, "Oh sh**, I'd better be careful!". But did she? Apparently, not. She proceeded to punch Lois (who, as far as I know, has never done anything to deserve such treatment) and could have caused real damage. And then smirk about it. I hope Lois (in normal mode) kicks Lana's sorry butt to the moon.

I just watched the ep again, and she smashed it as she overheard (via super ears - and, uh, why was it necessary for Lana to brush her hair from her ear as she was listening in? She's hearing it through many walls....we get the point of super hearing already!!) Clark tell Chloe to watch out for her. Lana was probably jealous of the trust that Clark has for Chloe, something the 2 of them never have, nor never will share. And the picture of her with the horse and blue ribbon only drives home the point of the (false) image the BDA keeps of her on his pedestal.
Clana4Life
11-09-2007, 06:39 PM
Clark wasn't asking Chloe to watch Lana because he didn't trust her. He was asking her to protect and watch out for her. Trust wasn't an issue at that point. It's the same thing he did in Reckoning. He asked Chloe to watch out and protect Lana. He makes Chloe Lana's personal bodyguard, but I don't think the issue was a trust issue.
Billy Jor-El
11-09-2007, 06:42 PM
I'm not saying it was a trust issue between Clark and Lana, I'm saying that perhaps Lana feels Clark is closer to, and trusts Chloe more than her; he confides in her in ways that he never did to her, that's what makes her angry (along with some really pissed off hormones :) )
Clana4Life
11-09-2007, 06:47 PM
I don't that clark confides more in chloe. clark chose to tell lana about is secret. chloe found out via alicia. clark never confided that info to chloe, but to pete. it was only after chloe learned about clark's powers that he started confiding things to her. as you can see, he's really confiding in lana know - telling her about his mom and the DNA and the blue crystal. he told lana before anyone else. i'm not even sure that he's told anyone else.

I think she threw the mirror because when Lana heard Clark say to Chloe," Please keep an eye on Lana for me", Chloe's reply was, " Dont worry, I wont let her out of my sight".
I think that brought back memories of some sort while she was married to Lex. I think she was angered by the fact that she had to be watched. Then she calmed down when she saw her picture of when she was a teenager, a happier time.
Its kind of the show's way, of telling us, that Lana's inbalance of the mind is building up. I guess.
I think Lex had kept her holed up in the mansion and never letting her out of his sight, so to speak. Remember when , Lana came to Chloe when she had just moved in with Lex? Lana had said something about feeling overcrowded? and Chloe had said something like, is it Lex that is keeping you from seing your friends something like that.
I think I am babbling, what was the question again?

I think it was a representation that she isn't who she used to be, that person was shattered, just like the broken glass in both the picture frame and the mirror. I think she was trying to pretend she was still that person to Clark, but when she overheard him, she realizes he doesn't see her the same either, so she threw the photo. So basically I agree.

I just dont understand why Lana never had anyone she can go and vent her problems to.
In a way, her becoming psycho on us can also be that she always needed someone for her to turn to. I mean people need to vent problems and to solve whatever issues are at hand.
I always thought Chloe was a friend she can go to, but, it seems Lana really trusted Chloe all this time.
Lana is still that lonely person she was when she was a girl. Becoming evil was the only way she knew how to survive while being married and living with Lex Luthor. Then there was Lionel who was also manipulating her from the other end. The girl was being pulled from two different directions, no wonder she is suffering from a mild case of paranoia schiophrania , and maybe develop dual personalities.

The mirror was a symbol of how Lana had changed on the inside even though she may look like the same old Lana on the outside. Lana's obsession of seeking revenge on Lex due to all the hurt and her pain and hurt he caused her will be her down fall. And now Clark will begin too see if she continues on her quest. Lana has become a female version of Lex in some ways which sucks because he is obsessed with the Kryptonians. I still like Lana and it only makes her character that more interesting and complex. Only because both will realize what they are searching for or need they won't be able to get from their relationship. :(

I took it as an indication of conflicted identity. She's takes an old picture of herself and uses it to smash her current image displayed in the mirror. Is she the old, innocent, idealized Lana? The new, vengeful, self destructive Lana? In destroying both images, it would seem that her true desire is to be neither.
smallvillerocks45

Lana didn't hear the whole conversation, she just heard the part about Clark asking Chloe to keep an eye on Lana...so she got angry. As far as she was concerned, the powers were a "gift", and because she's such a big girl she doesn't need a baby sitter.
To me, it just looked like a mini temper tantrum. I hope this whole ordeal has opened Lana's eyes and cleared her head. In an ideal tv world (that involves superheroes), I want the Clana break up due to the realization that Clark has a higher and more meaningful calling, not due to the fact that his girlfriend is a lying sociopath. Is that too much to ask?
