View Full Version : So why did Lana name it "Isis"?

isis was an egyptian goddess, kind of like a universal mother figure. why would she name her foundation that? does she think she's a queen or some big mother-figure helping out all the meteor freaks?
we know TPTB never just randomly name stuff like this - i'm thinking there's got to be some meaning behind it.

Maybe just like Lex, Lana thinks of herself as a savior. Lex believes he saves the Earth from aliens while Lana believes she saves freaks from Lex.

From my research:
"Isis is the Egyptian goddess of funeral rituals. She is also regarded as the mother and protector of the pharaohs as well as the faithful consort of Osiris and dedicated mother of Horus."

Well.. Isis was the wife of Osiris, the resurrection god....and Lana DID come back to life of sorts...
Isis litterally means Queen of the Throne and well Lana is a bit of a high horse right now.
Plus Isis of the Dark Shazam family....Maybe Lana is secretly THAT Isis?? I mean after all she DOES get powers next week. *L* Just need Black Adam to show up... :P

Also, Lana decorated the Talon with Egyptian decor. I think it would have made more sense if Lana is the descendant of an Egyptian royal family or an Egyptian witch than Isobel from France.
Wasn't she also looking at ancient hieroglyphics to find out the tattoo on her back before? Can't remember, but I thought she bought some books on ancient language.
I like the hints of pink that contrast with black. There's like a power struggle with the two colors.

ISIS was a protector of the weak and the poor. That's why.

She has delusions of godhood.

Godhood? Please. It's just a title for a foundation that holds meaning behind it.

Give it a break. I don't think Lana has any delusions of godhood.
Disillusion, yes. Tormented and sadly questioning, definitely. If she had name it LanaCorp then she does have delusions of grandeur. But as secretnlyz have pointed out Isis means protector of the weak and poor.

I'm gonna go with this one.
Also Isis was wife of Osiris who was god of the underworld. That's interesting. I think the associations with death cannot be ignored but... whatever.

Perhaps Isis is an acronym? If we were truly clever we could figure out what it means.

Lana has always like Egyptian things, look at how she decorated the Talon.
Also, in Season 6, she dressed up as an Egyptian for Halloween.

I think "Isis" is also for female power that inhabits light and dark characteristic.
So basically, girl power that can go either way, she can be good to protect the weak or be a badass to do the same.
IMO, they are just trying to portray her as the female version of Lex.

I don't think that's unusual because what she was doing was restoring a movie theatre from the art deco period and a lot of old movie theatres from that period use Egyptian themed art.
I don't think that has anything to do with it.
Isis was traditionally the wife of Osiris, god of the underworld (who is Pluto in Greek mythology - incidently Pluto's wife was Persephone: the daughter of the goddess Demeter, who was dragged into the underworld against her will and forced to spend one half of every year there for the rest of time - Lex and Lana anyone?)
Isis was also commonly known as the goddess of magic and healing, but her most glaring feature was her obsession with her son Horus. (some mythologies say she married him) She was seen in Egypt as the deified mother of the Pharoahs and she is always associated in Egyptian mythology with motherhood. Suppossedly, she raised Osiris from the dead in order to conceive Horus.
In some twisted way has Lana never truly gotten over her "pregnancy"?
Maybe I'm giving the writers too much credit...

I think it's most likely an acronym, But this is a culmination of various resources I had prepared on the goddess, for a project i was doing a couple yrs ago. :) :
Isis is the Great Mother, Moon Goddess, Giver of Life and the Goddess Supreme. Isis weaves the threads of the Tat or Knot of Fate (also blood). Isis is mostly identified with Demeter, Hera and Selene, being that Isis is ruler of the moon, agriculture and protector of marriage.
There were festivals in the spring and autumn to honor Isis, but Isis's most prominent celebration was the Night of the Teardrop in June. It is a night to remember the losses of Isis and Isis's eternal mourning for Osiris, her husband. Supposedly the art of making magickal knots and blowing on them was taught to the humans by Isis and that along with Osiris ,Isis taught humans to spin flax, grind corn, weave cloth and cure disease. Isis was the patron of marriage, the moon, divination, motherhood, agriculture, protection, reincarnation, initiation, fertility, magick, purification and domestic life. Isis is a sacred part of the holy trinity along with Osiris (the father) and Horus (the divine son).

When I saw the name I wondered why she chose it myself. I figured it had something to do with Isis being considered one of the major Mother Goddesses and a Goddess of rebirth (and since Lana is trying to be a 'mother' to all these Kryptomutants and trying to fix them and give them a new life...).
Of course my other thought was Isis from both the tv show and the Black Adam family.
And I just thought of something. Isis is considered the Goddess of Magic (she had a lot of titles, that woman!). So that's kind of fitting too. (Lana and Isobel, I mean.)

Quite right, I see someone has a nack for mythology! I love it as well! Greek, egyptian, scandinavian etc..
And the culture of antient egypt is one of my favorite hobbies!
But back to Lana, yes, I think chosing the name Isis, has two reasons:
Firstly she loves everything egyptian!
Secondly she is arrogant to think that everything evolves around her! I mean Isis was also in a love triangle between two men, two brothers in fact, one of them being Osiris!
Now Osiris' brother killed him and intended to take Isis as his mate, but Isis brought Osiris back to life, and they had a child, and every egyptian Pharo is seen as a representative of Isis and Osiris' son! Cleopatra again thought of her self as a representative of Isis, the mother of all gods!
Again, back to Lana, the similarity is more than clear, Osiris, the hero being Clark, his brother, the bad guy (I can't for the love of me remember his name), being Lex, and she the Isis!
I mean the ego of that girl, you could build cities on it!
