I really didn't like that, it almost makes it seem like Kara is more important in Kal El's life than his parents.

what does the Kal part of it even mean and WHY would it remind him of Krypton's sun or whatever....?

I suspect that in the DC universe, words on Krypton probably mean more to them than to us. "Kal" may mean something like "distant world" or "survivor". We see similar things in the real world. For example, Keanu Reeves' first name loosely translates as "cool breeze over the mountains".

Would have helped if Kara explained why she said Kal-El.

I recall her saying something about their sun being only a distant star to him when he's on Earth. I assumed that Kal was the name of their sun. It ties in well with Sol being the name of our sun, after all.

I thought it was cute that she put the idea in lara's head,it shows that she was close to lara.

Yes, I assumed that as well, but it's sloppy writing yet again. The writers really couldn't fit in a line of dialogue like this?
Kara: You should name him after our sun, Kal.

It was just a guess, based on Kara talking about their sun being only a distant star to him on Earth. Nothing official, just a guess.

In the comics Kal-El means starchild.

Kal El wasn't named after their sun cuz the Kryptonian sun is called Rao. In the comics Superman is always going "Great Rao!"... Rao was also the name of one of their gods. Sorta their version of Ra.

That could have used a bit of explanation.

Sailor Krypton: Smallville is not and never will be the comics, it is it's own continuity and has constantly made changes to the mythos, and will continue to do so. Just cause the comics says it, doesn't mean it isn't true.

Nataku:

In the comics Kal-El means starchild.

And sometimes they do use stuff from the comics. Judging by how this makes perfect sense given Kara's speech about the sun only being a distant star, I think "Starchild" is probably the perfect name for him, and this is likely what they were referring to.

She said so when he looks up to the sky he'll think of us. I took it that Kal = Kara And Lara.

the way they made it sound Kal wasnt the name of there sun but more refering to the fact he was away from home so Kal refers to being so far away from home

didnt clark say his name was Kal in season 3 through his time in metropolis clark back then was away from his home in smallville

so Kal loosely means: away from your home, El: family name

It was stupid! I can't stand the fact that it was Kara. That just flies smack in the face of the comic books. I know this show is loosely based on them but show some respect. It was such a stupid reason for him to be named Kal-El from what Kara said. The writers are forcing all this crap on us like George Lucas did with the prequels. "Mmm... What else can we put on this show to relate the relevance and continuity of the characters."

Well, since the audience doesn't speak Kryptonian how would they know that Kal means star? It was a cute idea to have her think of the name, but crappy execution of the writing.

The weird thing is, according to the Kryptonian Language Project, the word "Kal" means girl...

I didn't like it either. The name Kal-El, "Star Child" is one that should be bestowed by his parents and no one else. That was lame and unacceptable.
