And yet TPTB are hoping another guest star will make us forget all about a lackluster plot. :\

I’ve been saying on the boards since Season 2 that Helen Slater should play Lara (just like I’m saying now that Jeff East should play Ben Hubbard).

And when watching tonight’s episode I thought Slater still looked great and gave an excellent performance. I really look forward to seeing the next episode with Helen Slater.

did anyone else think that Lara looked a little bit like Chloe would look when she's older? :\

I though she did a wonderful job. I wish she was a regular. She brought a real genuine quality to "Smallville." I can't wait for her next appearance.

She had that motherly quality that Annette had too...I agree.

I loved her performance. She was really awesome in the role of Lara. The role fits her and can't wait to see her come back.

Excellent job by Helen Slater. The best thing about the cheesy Supergirl movie and she shows us why in this episode.

11-01-2007, 09:07 PM
I always wondered why she never became a more well known star like her brother Christian, but maybe she didn't want to be...

MidgardDragon

Possibly she was put off by how her first film role turned out, or possibly no one wanted to hire her after it flopped. I'm sure over the years the stigma has worn off, but she probably fell out of the game by that time.

ETA: Then again, she has a pretty full resume, just not many starring roles:

I definitely agree, she was excellent….. In terms of story it’d be hard to make her an “every episode regular.” But if they found a way without making the story ridiculous, I’d be happy….. Maybe Clark can see a hologram image of her in the FOS almost every episode, the same way Christopher Reeve saw Marlon Brando.

Man, she really does a lot of good acting roles. It is ashame she hasn't gotten a chance to do more to make a name for herself but that's how a lot of lesser known actors in the industry choose to be. They'd rather not be big-shot film stars, otherwise it'd just get to their heads.

Just for the record, Helen Slater and Christian Slater are not related...although they have played siblings in film ironically enough. But once again, they are NOT related.

On another note, whats with the knocking on Lynda Carter. Thats uncalled for. I thought Lynda and Helen were both great in their respective roles.

uhhuhhim
11-01-2007, 09:52 PM
My bad. I didn't know that they weren't related. On the Supergirl DVD, it states that they are somewhere.

And I don't think it's uncalled for...for me to state my opinion about Lynda Carter's appearance because I thought Helen was better.

Jephael
11-01-2007, 09:54 PM
Yea, though someone else seemed to take the Lynda Carter comment a bit too far, which I too find uncalled for. I mean come on, that was friggin Wonder Woman!

Great :\ Maybe she'll come back as Chloe's deceased mom. She'd be equally enthralling laying in an open casket as she was a catatonic mother.

also what could have been cool, if Helen Slater would have done a Reeve foundation thing at the end of the episode. It would've been nice

Helen did a great job! As for displaying "powers", it was not needed.

She was an expected mother checking out where her son was going to spend his life.

They'll have her do all her appearances then roll out the Reeve Foundation message.

She isn't related to Christian Slater. In fact, Slater isn't even his real name. It's Christian Michael Leonard Hawkins. Helen Slater is from Long Island, New York and Christian Slater is from Manhattan.

They played brother and sister in The Legend of Billy Jean, but they aren't related. And there's even an erroneous commentary on the Supergirl DVD that says they are. But they aren't.

I wanted to tear my hair out when I read the 'bio' info on the Anchor Bay DVD Special Edition Disc set. It does indeed erroneously say that Christian Slater is Helen's brother. Someone didn't do their homework that night, it seems.

To add to what you were saying, even Helen's surname wasn't originally 'Slater', either, according to her IMDb bio. It's Schlacter.
There was even an on-going, utterly ridiculous feud on Helen's IMDb message board on the same topic. But I digress.

Loved Helen's performance for the most part. She brought a warmth and charm to the role of Lara, but I found her interaction with the Zor-El character to be lacking, somehow.

I was convinced that she wasn't in love with him, yes, but the whole "come and rule Earth with me thing" and the "I've saved your DNA" could have been met with a lot more horror and revulsion than was shown. I'd be ranting like a madwoman. "You did WHAT?! You sick, twisted weirdo! I won't be your science experiment!" SLAP!! KICK!! "Stay away from me and my family!"

Uhmm....yeah. Blame the writers for the not-so-great dialogue she was given, then...

I loved Helen in this ep. She was just the right blend of 'concerned mother' and 'loving auntie'. Not to mention we got a bit of that wide eyed wonder she portrayed so well in the Supergirl movie (I don't care what anyone else says! I liked it!).

A great performance from both Supergirls tonight. Bravo.

I've always loved Helen Slater. :)

She did a really great job as Lara, and god she is still a stunning woman. It seems that Lara also had the same motherly "glow" SV gave Martha sometimes. LOL. I did love how motherly she portrayed Lara.

I can't wait for "Blue"!!!!!!

Can't believe its been about a quarter of a century since she did Supergirl ... but she still looks super to me! Same great figure, and if anything, age has added some real character to her face.

Anyone know how old she is now? (Got to be in her mid- to late forties, I imagine. )
