I remember from the trailers saying it was a 90 minute event. I only remember it being one hour. Was it really a 90 minute event? That's all I wanted to ask.

If I remember correctly, it was longer than a full hour, and it ran for longer than a full hour, but there were multitudes of commercials and a long Batman Begins preview.

Oh. Grww. Commercials. So then Smallville actually did make it to having a two hour event one time. A show like that should have two hour events and more visual effects. Now there budget is better, but I'm still not happy with the rest of season 7.
Smallville is like 42 minutes, not counting the commercials. I wish they could make it as long as possible, before it makes an hour, then there wouldn't be any commercials. But I wouldn't want any commercials! But they have to have commercials.
I heard in season 5, they started making the episodes 'a little bit shorter'. I couldn't believe that. Why? How long was it before then?
I just watched Arrival, and realized just how short it was. It was quite short for a premiere.

I remember not knowing about the extra 30 minute thing so my taping was screwed up.

90 minutes is an hour and a half, not two hours. ;) I'm still hoping the series finale will be two hours, though.
Here's something to think about. S1 had 21 episodes and totaled an aprox. 922 minutes. S6 had 22 episodes and totalled an approx. 917 minutes.
Btw, last year's "Labyrinth" didn't even come to 40 minutes.
I just checked on the dvd, the season 4 finale was 50 minutes and 43 seconds.

Yep, most of that extra half hour was commercials and a Batman Begins promo, I remember people being pretty ticked about that.

Speaking of commercials, it seems like they are cutting the show down even further. I could have sworn the episodes were originally 44 minutes, but it seems more like 40 minutes. now for the average show. Sometimes there is 6 or 7 commercials between segments.

There are a lot of commercials but I'm not complaining, there managing to bring us great effects and decent to great stories every week despite being in the seventh season and likely having their budget from The CW cut. The commercials help pay the extra bills. If they start having 30 minute episodes then I'll be upset, but 40 minutes, meh, I can handle it.

Well I realize they have to pay the bills, but they should more equally distribute the commercials, because in some cases it seems like an eternity since the show is on when there is that many commercials in between.

Does anyone remember how the pilot aired? Was it shown w/ limited commercial interruption?

Well I don't know how to explain that, except that possibly my UK dvd has missing scenes.
I can tell you though that labyrinth came to 38 mins and nine seconds. Is this the shortest episode I wonder?
