View Full Version : Monica's "Monkey See, Monkey Do" ability

Is it just a coincidence that the name Monica sounds an awful lot like the word monkey? Probably not, my friends, probably not...
At first I saw Monica as Charlie #2. Seemed very similar, and in some respects their powers aren't really that different. But Monica's talent is definitely the more entertaining of the two...
As per wiki, while Charlie's ability was "enhanced memory", Monica has "the power of photographic reflexes, meaning she can replicate any physical motion she witnesses without having to practice it, and in some cases improves on it."
However I don't think wiki has this completely right. Monica's monkey ability is clearly directly connected to television. They made it a point to show her eyes scanning/recording the electronic images from the tv screen -- makes sense seeing as her relative Micah is also an electronics freak. So it looks to me that Monica can only duplicate things her eyes scan from tv. As I joked on another thread, I guess you could say she's the Idiot Box's very own Idiot Hero.
I also joked, what would happen if Monica sees someone jump off a cliff or a building on tv? Will her photographic reflexes "compel" her to do the same, sort of like the rose thing where she did it without really realizing what she was doing? That would definitely be a funny, and appropriate end for her character. heh
Monica's ability has the potential to be one of the most entertaining we've seen so far. I hope Heroes goes all out with it.
Finally, a good slogan or tv spot for Monica's character could be:
"Monica see. Monica do."
(move over "save the cheerleader, save the world"...lol)

No offense Xanderman but i think we could have saved a thread and posted this in the dozens of other Monica threads we have right now. I just everyone's bitting this whole Monica's power into the ground like a dead horse. It's photographic reflexes...end of story until we see her do something else.
Again i'm not bashing on you Xander...it's just i get tired of seeing people posting the same thing over and over and over again.

"Most of us just watch TV. Monica Dawson...lives it. Heroes on NBC."
"What ever you do, DON'T change the channel."

You may have stepped over the line thread starter. Seeing that it is racially offensive to use the term 'monkey' in regards to an african american. Not that you seemed to notice.

Yes, because it is so clear that is what was meant...
Good grief, man, it has nothing to do with race, get over yourself.

OMG, I think you are stepping over the line with your "lets find some racist comment today". Can't you realize the the "monkey" term was refering to her power!!!
May you should rethink your reverse discrimination attitude...

I'm having these phrases in my head now.
"Is he being racist? Is he being racist? Is he being racist? Is he being racist? I'd swear he's being RACIST"

Thanks for having my back guys.:) I can see how some might be offended, especially if they don't watch the show or understand the reference to the expression I used. I was just mocking the ability the show gave her, not the person.
By the way, in the episode that just aired, Micah actually said "Whatever you see, you can do!" to Monica, which is clearly a reference to the expression I used -- I got a bit of a kick out of that.
But why did Micah have to explain Monica's ability to her, couldn't she figure it out for herself? Lol she seemed pretty surprised by everything Micah was teaching her about herself, like it was all news to her or something. Speaking of Micah, for a kid, he seems pretty quick on a lot of things, like Sylar -- I mean does he also got "intuitive aptitude"? lol
Also, the last episode revealed that Monica can imitate what she sees in real-life as well. Previously they had only shown her copy moves from television -- which was kind of misleading on the show's part.

It's ok Xander i think pretty much everybody understood where you were going with it.
But i'm glad they finally showed her doing something that wasn't on tv cause all those people saying "Oh i think she can only do what she sees on tv." Now they finally understand it's not tv based.
