Uhh...how did Clark get that syrup so quickly. Even with superspeed...he cant PAY that fast...especially without giving away his power to the cashier.
I knew he was a criminal.

Cashier: Oh look...money! Jackpot.

Manager: After doing inventory, I noticed that we were missing a bottle of our best syrup. You're fired.
Cashier: Wha-?

Now how in the f#@%* is the clerk gonna' know what the money's for, or what to scan?

It's a simple case of filmic reality vs. true reality. They needed that scene to go by very quickly, so they omitted a few minor details. Besides, what do the logistics of that scene really have to do with the episode as a whole?

Clark zooms back to impress Lana, and hands her the maple syrup.
Lana: This isn't the butter flavored maple syrup. Run & exchange it. Thanks. :\

Did Clark just steal maple syrup? LOL. That along with the casual killing and the writers forgetting that Chloe couldn't have talked to lana....wow, they were off their game with this one.
THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT! No way he could go to the store and back in under a second with the syrup without stopping to pay. He may not be a stone cold super-killer, but he likes to jack things, :p .

I've seen at least one more thread about it already; the truth is that they probably ignored the logistics, to make the scene go by faster (no pun intended), and to focus on Lana's reaction.

Yeah he stole Vermont Syrup, federal crime. Yeah it woulve been cool if he left the money there, and there person is like wtf! and all u see is a gust of wind knocking down all the guys stuff. GO CK!

It would've been funny if like they had a 10-20 second pause between Clark disapearing and coming back to indicate he atleast took the time to pay for the syrup.

In an episode of L&C, they did just that. Clark performed a "magic trick" for Lois, making a bundle of flowers appear in midair. In reality he supersped down to the corner flower stand, grabbed the flowers, left the money, and returned. They did a fun little pan over the change being dropped too, to show that he'd paid.
Whereas here, they leave us to assume that he paid though no indication at all is given. I'm confident he did. Remember how crazy Jonathan went when Clark stole under red K?

Can the writers possibly believe no one would catch this blooper? No cash register in the world would be fast enough for Clark to go get the syrup and pay for it.
Whooaaa, wait a second! Was that really Syrup? And just where DID he get it from? Was it hidden somewhere in his loft?????

Not only was there not enough time to pay for the syrup but he just came down from his bedroom and I doubt that he even had his wallet with him. I'm going to rewind and see if he even had shoes on. Is the Man of Steel a thief? Another great example of the great writing.

I don't understand how you can say Clark didn't have enough time to pay for the syrup? He used his superspeed and ran to Vermont paid for the syrup and ran back home in no time. For someone who can run at superspeed this wouldn't be a problem.
One can assume he had his wallet on him when he came down stairs. That's what I do, I get up, shower, get dressed and put my wallet in my pocket.

10-20-2007, 02:23 PM
If he paid for it, it wasn't in the coventional manner. He must have taken it off the shelf and left the money by the cash register. I hope he knew how much the Vermont tax was. Then again, I was just in Vermont a week ago and they may not have tax on food items there. Those stands in the middle of the roads sure don't.

The shop has to run it trough and check it that its been payed , so no way Clark could do that even if he would get past all the people waiting in line he has to wait at least 10 seconds by the least , so that was sloppy.

I think he stole it too, there wasnt enough time for when he was gone to pay for the item. Yes, he could have gotten there and back in that time but pay for it too?
Unless he used the new Visa paywave and scanned the card as he ran out.

No scanner could scan something in a 1000th of a second (or even less than that). So he would have to take it and leave the money on the counter. And trust me, you won't find off the road places in Vermont that sell their own maple syrup having scanners. Yeah, supermarkets will, but like I said, he was moving way too fast for a scanner to work.

So he grabbed it and left enough money to cover it and tax, not exact change...he could let them keep the change and not worry about it. Heck, he don't gotta worry 'bout no coin, him gots a new truck every season :)

Did anyone notice that after he returned with the syrup Lana had to go? You'd think she'd sit down with him and ask him if they have blueberries on Krypton. Eat by yourself I have things to do.

Yeah, why would she make all that food and leave? If I stood there making all those pancakes and cutting up all that fruit Kara dipped her hands in, I'd be sure to sit down and treat myself to what I just made, not "Go meet Aunt Nell in Metropolis."

When in fact she went into her control center to spy on Lex. She's obviously lying to Clark and up to no good. It will be interesting to see how this turns out. If she turns into a badguy and knows Clark's secret that isn't good. Perhaps she's just full of revenge towards Lex and wants to put him away for good. In any event, she ain't shopping with her Aunt.

He was in France to get cheese for Lois.
Later in that same episode on L&C they actually showed CK supershop. He took some flowers and left the money in their place.
Rewatching my L&C dvds at the moment because Smallville is just painful to watch... again. Man, how I hate soap drama.

I suppose he could run to Washington DC every morning, kiss his mother good morning and be back in about one second. I would think she'd get pretty irritated after a while. She's on the toilet worried about when Clark will appear.

Clark is not a thief. He left money on the counter, in the maple tree, by the barrels, and with the old guy sitting in the shade. And for all we know, Bart's sister could have been working the counter that day. That would make for a pretty quick transaction.

I thought about this when it happened. I think he left the cash at the register. I bought Vermont syrup like that once, and the little shop I was in didn't even have a scanner.
Why would he need shoes? He's the man of steel.

Even if Clark did leave the money on the counter for it, the cashier probably would have had a WTF moment. He/she would not know where it came from and probably pocket it.
Without an explanation, Clark ended up stealing it, whether he paid for it or not.

He said it was Vermont's finest. Where the best syrup comes from.
And whether he paid for it or not, it probably confused the clerk at the store. Not knowing where it came from, he/she probably pocketed it. Even if Clark did pay for it, chances are he still stole it, because the store didn't get credit for it.
If you worked at a grocery store and saw three dollars in front of you and not know where it came from, would you stick it in the register?

Only if you are already ethically corrupted in the first place. The customer pays, the clerk pockets the payment, it is not the customer that has taken money out of their pocket who is the thief.

I think you're all missing the point. There was a subtle parallel between Lois Lane and Lana Lang with Clark and the syrup, and again, Clark and the flowers on LnC. The parallels between Lois and Lana get stronger as the 7th season progresses. So I've only noticed it after watching MORE of the episodes this season.
