View Full Version : Request for separate episode forums for Canadians/Americans

We should get separate forums for these episodes. One for the Canadians and one for the Americans. I've noticed a huge drop-off in posters on Thursday night because nobody wants to come in here and be spoiled before they see the show. I used to enjoy the "countdown", "if you're just joining us", and the "live discussion" threads but nobody posts in them because there's spoilers floating around all over the place.
Anyone else feel this way?

You could make your own "Countdown for Americans" and "If you're just joining us.. for Americans" and stay on that page.
Don't read all the other topics. Then you won't be spoiled.

Well I do have to say that I do miss being able to talk live with more people (Canadian here.) about what's going on. But when you guys had SV a full WEEK!!! before us, there was no way to even go on this site.
I think that there should be a way to get SV on wed. for the U.S. too.
Sound like a good compromise?

I forgot about when the US had it a week before Canadians. That's a good point.

That still wouldn't work. One or all of those threads could end up being pushed down to the bottom of the page or even end up on page 2, forcing the reader to see all the spoiler thread topics while trying to find them.

Well I would be willing to be respectful enough to not post any specifics in titles until the next night.

These forums just aren't the same anymore. Can't you see the lack of posts in all off the episode common threads like the ones I mentioned in my first post? The majority of people are staying away due to these episode forums becoming like the Spoiler forum.

To be fair, no one really cared when Canada was a week behind. We couldn't use the site at all, because spoilers were on the news page and everything.
This way, it's only one day, so all you guys are missing are two or three live threads.
You can still use the rest of the forum and the website. It's just two threads.
You guys can decide collectively who will make the live threads each week, then when looking for the threads, you just look for "Thread Starter" instead of the subject.

I agree on either seprate forums or un-specific titles. I used to be on the countdown from 6:00 am till it aired but now I am only coming foor the final hour. It would definitly be better to have seprates or title changes.

No, not really. In fact, there are about 1000 more posts per ep. then there were last season.

I like it this way. I could hardly get on Thursdays after the show because of the heavy volume of posters. The threads would go so fast I could hardly keep up.
Now I get to say all I want and on Thursdays I just read what the rest have to say.

Of course all the Canadians are the ones posting in this thread, because 99% of the Americans won't touch this forum until after it airs.
I like how the Countdown thread has only 15 posts...with spoilers

Sorry, but I didn't see one complaint when Canada was a week behind.
I even went on the news page (I didn't think there would be spoilers there, since they knew Canada got Smallville a week later) and had the season finale spoiled.
That was a few seasons ago, but still. For you guys, it's just a few threads.

Really? What on earth do you consider to be a spoiler in the countdown? Was it the "one hour to go" part?
maybe just a mutual respect thing then. It's fine if canadians see it early :) but maybe just not post specific spoilers in the titles of the threads or list (spoilers) for some of us (like me sometimes) who can't tell if the thread is full of spoilers or not.
I usually just hit up the forums after the episode anyway - but it is a little difficult to pop over and see all the titles of the threads and try not to read them.... but oh well. At least we all get to see the show :)

In Canada, Smallville is only seen a day early by 1% of the entire Canadian population that has access to view the show on that A channel. The fact is, the majority of Thursday Smallville viewers outnumber the Wednesday viewers probably 50,000-1. You guys don't care because why should you? Anyone who has been around these forums for a while can see the huge drop-off in posters all day Thursday until the show airs.

I was thinking of the live discussion thread when I wrote that, but the point still exists in that thread as well.

Yes. The live discussion does have spoilers, and that can easily have a second live for the U.S. In fact.....

I've said all I have to say on this subject. You obviously don't see my point. Creating separate threads is just putting a band-aid on the issue. People aren't coming here because of the spoiler thread titles.
Suggesting everyone play nice and not post any thread topics with spoilers in them isn't fair to the Canadians who want to talk about the episode. Not only that, but it would never work and is a ridiculous suggestion. It also isn't fair to majority of viewers that want to share in the excitement before and during a new episode on Thursday without fear of reading these spoiler thread topics.

Well, I don't think any Americans here would actually make such request like u did. Us Canadians here on this forum really appreciate the Americans and we're trying to make harmony here. But you!
First of all, I don't appreciate the request u ask for, to make a separate forum for Cdn and Americans, it's like you're trying to totally separate from us Canadian, it's like an insult to us. It's the fact that we did watched it the day before the Americans and that we're like any other normal people that would like to come in abit earlier to discuss about the show. So WUTS WRONG W/ THAT?? If u don't appreciate the spoiler messages that we've posted here, u can choose not to read them u know.
So rite now u said u want a separate thread from us, so what's on your next agenda? To separate an episode forum for Caucasian/South Africans/Asians?

Stop acting stupid. Stop acting like this is some type of insult towards Canadians. Probably 5,000 out of the 4.8+ Million Viewers are Canadians who see the show on Wednesday. Know your facts and understand the scope of the topic before posting stupidity.

Actually "Wow a Canadian. Who woulda thought?" is an insult.
But still. You admitted yourself that it's ridiculous to ask Canadians not to post spoilers in thread titles so the US viewers don't see.
Like I said before, just collectively decide WHO will make the American countdown thread, then you can just look for "thread starter" instead of subject lines.
If it's not possible for whatever reason, it's just two threads. I think you'll live fine without them.

I find it upsetting that some people expect separate forums because they see it a day later, but when Canada got it a WEEK later, no one said a damn thing.

I absolutely agree, but I don't think we need to get to insulting each other over this - it's silly.
I don't see what is so difficult about avoiding the episode thread if you don't want to be spoiled. Those Canadians that only watched Smallville on local stations had to do it all these years.

Avoiding the spoiler threads is not that challenging.

What I kind of find ridiculous is the suggestion that simply browsing through the titles of the threads can spoil the episode. There is VERY limited information that you get out of just the title of the thread, if you don't have the self control not to click into the thread that is a total different story. I don't see why the suggestion to just have an American viewer start an American live discussion/countdown thread as a viable solution....
*sigh* I'm half American and half Canadian so I have a pretty good duality of perspective... separate forums is a selfish request on the part of the American viewers....

I just read over the subjects (for this episode) and the only spoilers I read were
1. Shelby isn't in this episode - which is no surprise
2. Curtis Knox is Jack The Ripper - which isn't a very big spoiler at all
It's not like people are posting:
(*spoilers*)
JIMMY HAS DINNER WITH KARA AND CHLOE GETS JEALOUS, THEN THEY BREAK UP - WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Or anything like that. It's not that big of a deal.

I just don't understand why people are making such a fuss. Segregation is not the answer. But self control might be.

I'm sorry, but one thing I really DON'T want people to feel on this forum is limited by their conversation. If that small percentage of Canadian viewers wants to be allowed to talk about "Cure," they should be able to do so without censorship.
There IS a big bold disclaimer and warning that people might be spoiled, as you see "Cure" listed among the episodes. People are being warned that being spoiled is a possibility. Is there a chance that people might not be able to participate as easily in the Countdown thread? Yes, but I see that as the only major problem.
There have been times in the past where I didn't even create the new episode forums until 3 hours or so before the show. Right now, people are getting the forums over a day early, and those in Canada who want to talk about it, well, they can. Or there might be the people who come into here seeking spoilers.
The only recommendation I could have here, which I think might be counterproductive, would be a "non-spoiler American countdown thread."
Fans in Canada (or any foreign country, really) usually get spoiled by U.S. fans in ordinary circumstances; yet they can deal... I think it's only fair that they have their own place to do it here. And creating separate American and Canadian forums is really out of the question and way too much trouble for everyone involved... I think it would actually cause a lot of confusion resulting in even fewer posts.
I don't know though. Others are welcome to correct me, but I don't see a huge problem here.
Also, may I remind that telling other fans they are "stupid" is a violation of site rules and you can consider that an official warning. I understand if anyone has strong feelings on this, but insulting each other is against the rules here.
I do have to agree with what someone said earlier in the thread - I'm on the West Coast, as an example, and I get Smallville 3 hours later than everyone else. If I don't want to be spoiled, I simply stay out of the forum section and leave this to the East Coast mods.

WOW, if u're to talk about the level of stupidity, I'd suggest u go back and look at your thread title and read it out 5 times. Better yet, you should read it out to the kids outside your house and hear what they would have to say about it. Maybe it's a ridiculous request, maybe it isn't. There was nothing insulting or belittling about my original post. The problem is you only see what you want to see.
The conversation and ideas being discussed was nice and civil until you injected your assumptions that my intentions are racially based and I somehow want to segregate Canadians for some type of "agenda".

personally i want as much Smallville exposure as i can get, so i don't mind the advance spoilers! :)
But I respect others who don't want to be spoiled and I don't see why these threads can 't be treated the same as the picture threads, etc, exception whereas some of the the picture threads and others have a one-week rule, these threads could have a one-day rule, for Canadians.
would that fix the problem? :\ :)
---Sorry if this was already mentioned i haven't read thru the other posts.

I'm Canadian, but I watch it on Thursdays so I can get the CW trailer.
Well, and I watch Little Mosque on the Prairie on Wednesday.
But people shouldn't be posting about the episode until it finishes running at least in North America, otherwise it's spoilers as far as I'm concerned.

10-18-2007, 07:28 PM
I don't think a one-day rule is fair... it's like, we don't ask American fans not to post about Smallville episodes right after they air.
Now if people started talking about "Cure" in other sections where it might not be so good, then there may be a problem.
The best solution is still, if you don't want to be spoiled, don't visit that part of the forum.

Its funny how people think all canadians have a choice on what day its on. I dont have CW network because i have basic cable. Broke no money to spend on that kind of luxury. On my basic cable Achannel is the only one that plays smallville. And they picked Wednesday nights. It wasnt like we chose this. Only good thing about the wed night thing for me is i get to watch survivor now lol.
Last year Phantom didnt play here on the thursday night. it didnt play until friday night. Does that mean that everyone should of waited til friday before they talked about the episode to be fair to everyone? Thats not the way it works. I just didnt go into the episodes form on Thursday night so i could see phantom fresh.
Just my 2 cents worth :)

It's not the same thing though. A-Channel only reaches a small percentage of the Canadian viewers. The ratings for Smallville tops 4.8 million viewers each week.
I'm only guessing numbers here, but say there are 50,000 A-Channel viewers. They are the ones posting here on Wednesday. The other 4.75 million viewers (Everyone not in the A-Channel demographic) would usually post Thursday.
This is what bothers me.
Maybe if I worded my thread topic to say A-Channel viewers instead of Canadians, we could have avoided a lot of the comprehension issues. But, I didn't think of it at the time. :\

i agree, seperate forums. it isnt the same as it used to be, not an insult to Canadians.
would it be better if it is called Thursday Smallville forum??
and lets be real here, it is an American series.

True, but out of YOUR 4.75M, 1/3 of them see it at different times because of time shifting. So would you suggest that no one post until 8pm Pacific time? That's 11pm for the east coast. I've never heard anyone in California complain that people in NY are spoiling it for them.

and funded by a U.S. company, therefore it is still an American series.

I know I'm repeating myself, but separate forums is not going to be an option. There is a clear warning to steer clear if people don't want to be spoiled.

4.75 million viewers had the opportunity to participate in pre-episode spoiler-free threads like the ones I mentioned in my OP. Whether they choose to continue to view the forum or wait 3hrs to is up to them. But it's not fair to compare 24 hours to 3 hours, especially when we're talking about 1% of the total viewers getting to see and post about an episode a day in advance. The entire episode forum then becomes like a mine field of spoilers. You never really know when you go into an episode if someone is going to post a spoiler having seen the episode a day earlier than 99% of the viewers.
I liken it to those Harry Potter videos of those guys going around to bookstores shouting out the main plot points of the newly released book.

Nightshadz, again, no one asked you to come into the "Cure" section before you'd seen the episode.
Just like visitors in other countries aren't asked to come into the threads and find themselves spoiled if their countries haven't aired them yet.
I'm closing this topic. You're running into circles, I said what the policy is here, and I've even put a big honking YOU WILL BE SPOILED message on the forum section thing. I've done all I can do. Any further problems can be taken to PM, but I feel like any response I've made to you thus far has been ignored, and I don't appreciate that.
