That would totally suck if he didn't keep it. He'd either have to hope no one dies, always trying to look out for them never being able to do what he needs to do, or just be really bad and lock them all up somehow so they can't get out and can't get hurt...and just hope Sylar doesn't find them. It's like he's flying through the air one day or something and Nathan random dies from a heart attack or something and then Peter falls so many miles to the ground but before he hits Claire somehow gets killed and he dies thinking he'll be fine.

as for peter retaining his powers we knew that before dl died. peter got ted's nuclear powers, when ted died, peter knew that he was the one who was going to go nuclear. and than he started to blow, after ted's death. and dont say its because syler was still alive cuz peter didnt come into contect with him until after he lit up
