See, I was confused there about the whole "half-awake smile." I thought maybe he meant Lana, like him walking into the room while she's waking up, with a half-awake smile. It seemed that way to me 'cause he was caressing his wedding ring, but maybe he was talking about Kara. Confused!

He was talking about Lana when he mentioned the half-awake smile. Kara is the "angel" that made him want to redeem himself. Lana is the one that he was "living for".
