The Greatest American Hero was the coolest Superhero TV show in the 80's...Smallville is #1 in my book but G.A.H. is definitely runner up..."Believe it or not im walking on air i never thought i could feel so free" I love that song... Come on everybody who else loves The Greatest American Hero, sing it with me..."Believe is or not im walking on air i never thought i could feel so free"

I liked it, but the flying sequences were substandard. But it was a funny Sid and Marty Krofft type of appeal. That and there wasn't much on in those days. It's worth a second look! The song Believe it or not, was a hit, and was more popular than the show itself, many people who enjoyed the song didn't know it was tied to a TV show! You can still download the theme song for free at some G.A.H. fansites. It would be hilarious if they used it in Smallville for Clark's flying lessons!

Believe it or not I'm walking on air,
I never thought I could feel so free....
Flying away on a wing and a prayer,
who could it be?
Believe it or not, its just me.

That's all I can remember of the song.
I was a G.A.H addict.
I always wanted William Katt to be my teacher.

You see, I don't want a comedian because Katt wasn't a comedian. Sandler would make it too goofy. He would bring his usually group of actors from his films and totally ruin it.
I think Norton would be great because he reminds me of a school teacher and it would be great to see him flying around badly and crashing into a building. It would be a big change of pace for him.

I don't think we need a remake of this. I found that site not too long ago when someone started a thread about old school tv shows we used to like. I'm afraid to watch it again. There are too many old shows I saw that were a lot better in memory.

I donīt know anything about this Greatest American Hero, but I once watched a similar show from Denmark called "Duksedrengen", which roughly translated from Danish means Fancy Boy. It was about a high school kid named Arno, who was in love with his classmate Loise, who was in love with her classmate Donny, who was in love with himself. Arno dreamed about being a superhero and knock out the competition from Donny, so he snuck into the school chemistry lab and made a potion that gave him superstrength. Next he got himself a suit and a superhero license and became Duksedrengen. His first heroic deed was to save Loise from two punks who were harassing her with a rubber spider that jumped when they squeezed an airpump. Then he ran away holding his arm out like Superman, making a SWOOOOSH sound. That was a hilarious show, I wished they could bring it back.

Anyone remember this show? William Katt was a teacher who was given a suit by aliens that gave him superpowers, but he lost the instruction booklet, so he was always crashing into things and screwing up. And Robert Culp was a Fed who used him a lot in his work. I'm not making this up. I used to watch it every week.
I think it killed some brain cells, but I enjoyed it at the time. The special effects were horrendous, but not TOO bad by the standards of the time.
Just curious if anyone else watched this, or is pathetic enough (like myself0 to admit to actually LIKING it. Here's a sad set of facts: I had the soundtrack single AND I can play it on a guitar.
There's no help for me, is there?:p

The show aired a few years ago on FX. And I think it might have aired on Sci-Fi, too. I liked it. It's so goofy and cheesy...and cute.

About Ralph's flying, if I remember right, there was one episode where he got amnesia, and was able to fly perfectly. It was like he forgot he didn't know how to fly and was just able to do it with no problems. Then, when he got his memory back, he went right back to crashing into things.

And the song is great. In my opinion, it's one of the best TV theme songs ever. I don't remember anything but the chorus but, when I was actually watching the show, I remember being impressed by how well the song fit.

Look at what's happ'nin' to me- hee,
I can't believe it myself.
Suddenly I'm up on top of the world,
It should have been somebody else
(BA DUM BUM BUM BUM BA DAA DUM BUM BAUMM BUM)
Believe it or not,
I'm walking on air,
I never thought I could feel
So free-hee-hee.
Flyng away
On a dream and a prayer,
Who could it be?
Believe it or not, it's just me.

You think capitalizing each line makes it seem more like poetry? Me neither. But I LOVE the theme song. There's a second verse, too, but I am a kind and merciful poster, and shan't force it upon thee.

I vaguely remember watching this show as a child. I'd like to see the reruns sometime if the show is ever re-aired again. I still hear the theme song occasionally on some AM radio stations - "Believe it or not, I'm walking on air and it makes me feel so good!" We used to play that occasionally in high school pep band.

I love GAH. They used to show it on FX. I don't know if Sci-Fi Channel ever aired it. It would seem to be a perfect fit.

Basically, the show was making fun of all those superhero movies/books/comics where some guy gets special powers and becomes an expert in using them in a day or two. I mean, really, if you were suddenly able to fly, don't you think it would freak you out a little? I imagine any of us would crash quite often, just like Ralph.

And he was invulnerable to bullets, like Superman, but he seemed to forget that when people started shooting at him with automatic weapons, and usually ducked and covered. I think I would, too. I mean, I'd be thinking, "The bullets bounced off of me all of those other times, but what if this was the one time when they don't?!?"

(sigh) I'd love to be able to watch this show again. I mean, even though I was pretty used to modern effects by the time I saw it on FX, I still enjoyed it. And it would be interesting to see a remake, whether as a series or a movie. And, heck, why not do a reunion movie. William Katt still looks pretty good, from what I've seen.

It was a fun show, but truth told the gimmick of losing the instructions for the suit and the resulting slapstick did get a bit tired.
My favorite bit was when he was trying unsuccessfully to fly for the first time and some kid who was watching him told him to take "three steps and leap", ala the George Reeves' patented take off, and it worked!!!!

One of my favorite moments from the series was when Ralph got amnesia. He forgot that he didn't know how to fly, so was able to fly perfectly. He forgot that he was uncertain doing all that super hero stuff, so was walking into dangerous situations all confident and "Superman-like". All he knew was that he was supposed to be a super hero, so he acted like one.

Then, he got his memory back, and went back to crashing again. :D

I know the show wasn't trying to deliver some big message or something, but that episode made me realize that there were all sorts of things I'd probably be able to do if I just believed I could. Because I'm corny like that. Anyway, it's true.

Also, when it was on FX a few years back, they were airing WONDER WOMAN and GAH back-to-back. It was perfect. Then, WW moved to SciFi, but I don't think GAH did, which was just too bad. There are so many cable channels where the show would be perfect. SciFi, of course, or maybe TVLand. Somebody has to pick it up. I mean, come on!

Basically, for those that asked, the Greatest American Hero was a TV show in the 1980s about an average schoolteacher that recived a special suit from an alien spaceship. The suit only worked when HE was wearing it. He was given it because they belived he could do good to humanity with it......but there was just one small problem.....when the spaceship left the suit and beamed it to the ground, he looked inside and found out that the instructions on how to use the suit were missing! Then the spaceship took off before he had a chjance to tell them he needed the instructions. So basically, he had to learn to use the suits powers all by himself. The reason I think that they named it The greatest american hero, is because that suit gave him the ability to do things that combined the different powers of certian indivudial superheros. That is it in a nutshell. It is basically a very funny series, seeing him try to use the suit and then things not turning out like he planned...like learning how to slow down when you are flying and comming in for a landing. Usually, he just bounced off a building.

That's worthy of a "Believe it or not" right there! :D

As to how I got into GAH, it was actually a slow assimilation process. I remember catching a rerun at about the age of 8, and just the one image (of Ralph flying like a maniac towards you) stuck in my mind for many years.

Then, during high school, TV Guide posted a viewer's letter asking why the hero's name was changed from Hinkley to Hanley. (For those who don't know, it was because "Hinkley" was eerily coincidental to the name of one John Hinckley [with a 'c'], who made an attempt on then-President Reagan's life less than two weeks after the show premiered. Because of that incident, the character's name was changed to "Hanley" or he was simply referred to as "Mr. H"; by the start of the second season, he was back to "Hinkley.") A photo of William Katt as Ralph in the suit accompanied the letter. It was that photo, in addition to seeing Katt perform in the musical "Pippin," that started my wondering, "Hey, I remember this show, I want to know all about it." And for the next several years, I went on a mission, determined to know as much as I dared about this series--bidding and purchasing such items on eBay as old magazines and complete series on VHS. I also came upon the GAH Homepage and discovered the theme song at that time. To this day, I still visit the message forums on the Homepage, and the theme ranks as one of my all-time favorites.

Now, here in 2004, I sit and I wait anxiously for the release of GAH on DVD. Sure as heck will beat watching episodes recorded on tape with average quality. :)

Greatest American Hero, The - We have a date for the 2nd season release!

Posted by David Lambert

1/11/2005

On Jan. 2nd we were excited to bring you the news that, even over a month before the release of the 1st season set, Anchor Bay had confirmed that a 2nd season release was already in-the-works. And now we have the date for that release. Thanks to correspondent Pavan Badal, who talked to Anchor Bay about upcoming release plans, we can pass on that the tentative date is a VERY quick April 5th!

We hope Pavan heard that right, because that's not even two months after the release of the first season! It's a no-brainer that it will sell, though, so stay tuned and we'll bring you more word about this release - including list price, details, and cover art - just as soon as Anchor Bay is ready to share.

So, i didn't see another thread on this, so i decided to make this one.

Anyone else love this show. I just bought the first season, and it's already like my second favorite show of all time, second only to quantum leap. I mean, this show was freaking hilarious. THe superhero who just didnt really want to be one, and then not being able to control his suits powers. It was so great. And the theme song, that was just awesome.

This was a great show. Very underrated. Too bad Katt fell apart after this-- I don't even know if he's still alive now-- or we might get a reunion movie. If you like him, though, he was in several Perry Mason tv movies after GAH, playing Paul's son-- which makes sense because he's really "Della Street's" son ;) .

I loved this show. My favorite part was whenever he tried to fly-- "AAAAHHHHHH!" *CRASH* :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Actually, they are working on a GAH motion picture at Disney, wiht the original cast playing soe supporting roles. Whether it's a continuation of the old series, or a new origin remains to be seen.

William Katt's still alive, and still acting. As are the rest of the cast. I can't to see if this movie goes anywhere.

And the flying, it was great. i love the pilot when the little kid tells him, you're doing it wrong.

How about the Seinfeld episode where George sings the theme song as his answering machine message... "believe it or not, I'm not home"!

I'm glad to hear that about Katt. I read that he had gotten heavy into drugs and even had done a few porn flicks to support his habit, then he just dropped out of sight completely. I'm not really a big fan of reunion movies-- let's face it, they usually suck-- and I don't really care much for making big screen movies out of tv shows-- let's face it, they usually suck even harder-- but I'll keep an open mind.

I just saw the pilot and oh man, The freakin' memories!!!

This was really a good show! Wow, Katt, Culp, and Selleca have extremely great chemistry together. Of course the effects are really lame, but who cares.

I wonder if Culp ever got an Emmy nod for this, He is truly one of a kind. His famous use of the word, scenario, haha!

And, Selleca is smoking.

I would love to see a movie remake of this show. time to add the rest of them to my queue.

This was really good show but I remember getting annoyed that they took forever to get him to fly correct. I checked for you and the show actually started in 1981 and ended 1983 so there should be a third season as well..:)

I used to rush home from little league basketball to watch this show...Finally got all 3 DVD box sets...by the third season, he was flying very well, landings were still bad, and he had another suit and lost it again....The episode he lost his memory in was when he flew into a speeding train

I loved this show! Lol! You know how we all secretly wish we could fly?
I always said if I could fly, it would be my bad luck, that I would fly like him instead of Superman. :\

I can see me crashing into the sides of buildings, and into treetops, or getting tangled up in power lines or something. :rotfl: :rotfl:

I think I'll dig out my Greatest American Hero DVD's, & make some new wallpapers, banners, avy's, & comedy art.
I'll post them in our new "Other TV Shows FanArt thread." (http://www.kryptonsite.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=71495) ;)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!
NO one told me there was a GAH thread on Ksite!

I love this show and have since watching it when it originally aired (yes, I'm that old. I also remember a time when a person had to actually get up and go to the TV to change the channel. Also known as the "why hasn't someone invented the remote control?" age.).

I finally got all 3 seasons on DVD recently (the third one had to wait a while).

I love the song, of course, and think Robert Culp was a genius as Maxwell.

My favorite episode all time waswhen the aliens that gave him the super suit come back and give him the instructions. After he shrinks himself to the size of a grain of sand, he forgets to unshrink the book with him losing the knowlege forever. Hilarious.

I'm a huge GAH addict.

Fantastic news for all GAH fans!
New GAH (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/080722-GAHReturns.html)

The comics sounds awesome as does the animated series (with the original voices?! So there!). As for the series being made into a movie, all I could think about was Bill Culp's interview on the Season 1 DVD where he mentions he thinks it would make a great series and that he would be very jealous of whoever plays Maxwell.

GAH is making a comeback people! *whoots*

Here's some news!

I don't know why this hasn't hit the news, but apparently casting sides have gone out for a NEW version of the Greatest American Hero!

I'm kind of in disbelief too, because I've heard nothing about it in mainstream news.

Either way, here's more info: http://www.kryptonsite.com/greatest.htm

I honestly don't know what to think! I mean, I'm all "yay" but also am kinda "boo!" Does that make sense to anyone else?

And there have to be cameos by William Katt, Connie Seleca and Robert Culp. There simply have to be.

You know, with William Katt being recent on Heroes, I really think they should just stick with him... I mean, he's in the public eye; why must Ralph be in his 30's, especially if the teen girl will clearly be the focus?

Also... I think Bill Maxwell would be even MORE amusing as an old coot. And I mean those words most respectfully to Robert Culp.

I went to a 25th anniversary GAH event a few months ago, where I saw them in person, and those folks had so much respect for the source material. They've just gotta be there.

I am crushed! Should have known....

It's funny but since reading the news I've been watching my DVDs. And while watching the Season 1 DVD extra interviews I sat there thinking "why can't they just do the original cast in a movie now?" I mean, the part where Robert Culp talks about it being a feature film and all? And how easily he slides back into being Maxwell? "Davidson!" And like Bill Katt says, he still pretty much looks like Ralph.

Have the green guys come down and give the suit back to Ralph for some reason (or just discount "Greatest American Heroine", I guess) and go from there. It could be really good.
*sighs* But probably not going to happen.

I have the entire series, I have been watching them over the last couple of days, with the death of Robert Culp it makes it kinda odd to watch.

I really wish they would make a remake of this series, I was glued to the set back in 1981 when it first appeared on TV.

While watching, I have noticed a ton of things I would have never noticed back when I first watched it, many errors and goof-ups.

Like when they changed his name for "Hinkley" due to the guy who shot Ronald Reagan to "Handley" there were several times the actors called him by both names during the first episode with that name, then they just called him "Mr H".
Plus when he flew they used the same background over & over.

One big question I have always had is, since the city they were supposed to be in was in California, why did all his students talk with a Brooklyn accent?

I would love to see them redo this series, I know the visual effects were really bad but it was the 1980s

The premise of the show was awesome and they even won a lawsuit (get it, law SUIT :p ) against DC comics as DC said it was too much like Superman, but the judge said if anything it was more like the original Green Lantern.
But I don't get that connection.

My parents made me miss episodes because of church. Otherwise, I would have been, too. :) If they do have a remake, they'd better have a Maxwell/Robert Culp tribute along with the guest appearances by William Katt, Connie Selecca, Faye Grant, and Michael Pare. Please.

I don't understand

Why does the guy crash when flying?

Even before he put the suit on he lost the instruction book, and he didn't know how to control the flight.

The same with most of the powers the suit gave him, as he discovered a power he had to figure out how to control it.
