Beauty and Joy and a Blessing to the World
“I’m sorry,” Chloe said as tears rolled down her face.
“It’s okay.” Clark handed her a tissue. “Everyone does it.”
“I promised myself I wouldn’t,” she sobbed. “But then when I look at them… I can’t help it… I… I…” Her words degenerated into incomprehensible blubbering. Even with his superhearing, Clark couldn’t understand her.
“Tyler, Taylor,” he said to the twins standing at his feet, “why don’t you two go play in the living room.”
“Yes, Daddy,” they chimed together in their clipped British accent. (Where they picked up the accent, he could never figure out.) Then they clasped hands and skipped out of the kitchen.
“No, please Clark.” Chloe grabbed his arm. “Don’t make them leave. I just want to look at them some more.”
“It’s better this way,” he said as he gently pried her fingers out of his flesh.
“I… I… guess you’re right,” she hiccupped. “It’s just they’re so beautiful. When I look at them I know there’s a God, a God who loves me.”
“Yeah, that’s what everyone says.” Clark sighed. “Would you like some coffee?”
It wasn’t that he didn’t appreciate the astounding beauty of his son and daughter; it was just after five years he was kind of used to it. Sure, if the light hit them right, say during sunset just after a storm, his eyes would get misty, but it had been a long time since the sight of them had made him weep uncontrollably with joy.
“You and Lana are the luckiest people I know,” Chloe said as she wiped at her eyes. “You blessed the world with your union, with your beautiful, beautiful children.”
“Yeah.” He poured coffee into a mug and handed it to her. “They’re a blessing alright. Just sometimes they’re too much of a blessing.”
“How is that possible?”
“Well, we can’t take them anywhere,” Clark said as he sat down on a kitchen stool next to her and sipped from his own coffee mug. “Every time we go out, people stop and start to cry and want to touch the children. There are traffic accidents, spontaneous singing and mass charitable donations. The twins handle it well, but it’s disruptive for everyone.”
“I guess it would be.”
He listened for a moment to make sure the children were behaving in the next room. Of course they were behaving. They never misbehaved. He could hear them playing happily with Taylor’s Smiling Susie dolls. Or maybe they were Tyler’s Smiling Susies. Clark could never remember who owned the Susie Dolls and who owned the Danger Bob Action Figures.
“The first day of kindergarten was a mess,” he said, returning his attention to Chloe. “I never thought joy could be so destructive.”
“Oh, I saw that on the news,” Chloe said. “Shame about the school.”
“Yeah,” Clark said and took another sip of his coffee. “We decided home schooling is safer for everyone.”
“Is that why Lana quit her job?”
“She’s only taking a leave of absence,” Clark quickly corrected her, “until we can hire someone to teach the kids, someone who’s qualified but also blind.”
“When I think of all the blind people who will never see Tyler and Taylor’s radiance,” Chloe sighed, “my heart breaks for them.”
Clark shrugged. “They’ll survive. Anyway, Lana’s teaching the twins for right now and she’s doing a great job. They’re already experts in art, astronomy, and kickboxing.”
“They’re perfect, your children.”
Clark couldn’t really deny that. His children were perfect in just about everyway. But there was something at the back of his mind that made him worry.
“I should probably go,” Chloe said as she finished the last of her coffee. “I have a big, important interview. Can I see the twins one more time before I leave?”
“Better not,” Clark said. “You’re mascara’s already starting to run.”
Chloe nodded her agreement and sniffled a little.
He saw her to the door and said good-bye. Then he returned to the kitchen to wash out the mugs.
Taylor and Tyler continued to play in the next room. Their little upper-class British accents made him smile.
“I will cut off Smiling Susie’s arms,” Tyler said.
“I will cut off Smiling Susie’s legs,” Taylor responded.
“Then we will sacrifice her to the Dark One.”
“Yes, the Dark One must have his sacrifice.”
Clark could feel the worry eating away at the back of his mind again, but he didn’t know why. He was happily married with two of the most beautiful children to ever walk the face of the Earth. What, exactly, was there to worry about?
“All hail the Dark One,” Tyler and Taylor chanted together. “We are your servants. All hail the Dark One.”
Clark was just being silly. There was nothing to worry about.
