Summery: Thanks to one person Krypton was saved. Kal-El wasn’t sent to earth but grew up with his people. Still some things are bound to happen, going to earth, falling in love with Lana Lang, meeting the Kent’s and having unpleasant run-ins with the Luthor’s. Now it just happens differently.

Prologue

It’s mind-boggling how one person can be the start a chain reaction that alters the fate of several worlds and the lives of hundreds of people. But it happened. Chancellor Mal-Alv, a member of the Science Council, was such a person. When scientist Jor of the house of El came before the council reveling his suspicion of their planets end the main reactions of the members were denial, anger and some even belittled the scientist for his outrageous claims. Mal-Alv was among the very few to sit quiet and go over the evidence Jor-El had given them to support his theory.

He thought it was time to interfere when some of the less intelligent members started to give threats to the scientist.

“Jor-El, when do you think we can start experiencing the consequences of the instability?” he asked, his voice well heard over the others.

“Have you lost your mind, or are you just growing old Mal-Alv? You can’t seriously believe this?” Sin-Ji, an up and coming member questioned in disbelief.

Not appreciating his sanity nor age being in question Mal snarled to the younger man, “If you and the rest of you pakas would have read what Jor-El has given us and not jumped him as you did I believe you would have come to the same conclusion I have and I think Mira Dar-Mir has as well.” On the other side of the table, one of the two female chancellors nodded without looking up from what she was reading. “This is a possibility, a real and serious one. So let’s hear what Jor-El has to say and then do something about it.” As some of the council members began reading, while being appropriately embarrassed, Mal nodded to Jor-El to answer his question.

“If my calculations are correct,” seeing the look from Sin-Ji he added coldly “and as I have gone through them thoroughly they are correct I believe that by the time of the Solar festival Krypton will start experiencing ground-quakes and weather anomalies. They will worsen the more unstable the core becomes.”

“What is the worse case scenario?” soft spoken Mira Dar-Mir asked.

“The core will give out. If that happens an explosion is the only thing expected, one big enough to destroy Krypton.”

For once all the members were quiet, thinking.

“And how do we prevent this?” Mal wondered.

Joe-El looked thoughtful for a moment before sighing, “As I see it we have two options; somehow fix the core or evacuate the population to a planet far away, far enough so it won’t be affected by the explosion.”

---

Walking through the door Jor-El was met by a bundle of dark hair and waving limps. His son Kal-El called out laughingly, “Papa!” and threw himself into his father’s arms. Jor-El barely managed to catch his son.

“Guess what, guess what!” the child said excitingly.

“What?” Jor-El smiled, taking the bait.

“I’m strong,” the boy said, flexing his arms.

“Really?” Jor-El said proudly, “You must tell me all about it.”

“Kal, let you father in.”

Kal’s mother, Lara, came out from the kitchen area. She laughed at the sight of her exited son. Jor put Kal down and walked over to his wife and gave her a kiss.

“How did it go?” Lara asked concerned.

“Better then I hoped. Some listened and they managed to get the others to listen too.”

“So?”

“They decided to try and fix the core.”

Lara signed in relief. It had been both of their fears that the Council wouldn’t listen. They had planned if such a thing would have happened and she was now grateful that they would have to put those plans in motion. She took a look at her son who was playing nearby.

“Will they be able to fix it?” she asked.

Jor thought a little before he answered. “With the new technology I believe so.” They both walked over to their son. Both ignorant of what should have happened that day.

If Mal-Alv hadn’t interfered the outcome of that meeting would have been completely different. Thanks to him Krypton would now stand a chance at surviving. And by doing so the fate and destiny of two people changed; Jor-El’s son Kal-El and a female girl on a primitive back water planet named Lana Lang. It was fate’s will for them to meet and fall in love and Fate always got what she wanted, always.

Nice beginning - you're a pretty good writer going by what's posted so far. So assuming Krypton doesn't explode, I wonder why Clark goes to Earth? On a rite of passage? How will he be different being raised by Jor-El and Lara in place of The Kents? I wonder how he'll meet lana... Lots of questions, but we won't know until you post more. Great start, keep it up.

Chapter 1

On the balcony of one of the highest buildings in the city Kal-El stood watching as darkness approached Kryptonopolis. Nighttime was always his favorite and each evening he could be found on the balcony watching over the city. When he was younger he used to imagine that somewhere down in the city was his hero, Nightwing, going about helping the helpless. As a youngster Nightwing was his role model and he used to run around in a cape and mask pretending to be the hero proclaiming that when he grew up he would be one himself.

`I would be the first super-hero of the house of El’s´, he thought with an inside snort and didn’t bat an eye as the outside lamps turned on. It was now so dark that the lights of the city stood out. `Everyone else are just regular heroes´, his inner dialog continued. It was hard being the son of Jor-El or being from the house of El in general. Jor-El was the scientist hero that saved Krypton, Kal-El’s grandfather Jor-El the first found the cure for a deadly and catastrophic disease, his grandfather’s brother Sul-El came up with technology like no other. Others in the El’s house included a legendary explorer, a top politician and a famous architect. So the expectation on Kal was high.

`I’m probably going to be the first El to be erased from the family record for not doing anything of importance. Then again I might be left in as the first family failure.´ Of everyone pushing for him to become someone his father was in the lead. It was Jor-El’s dream that his son was to become a scientist and work along side himself. `As if´, Kal thought, `if someone is to become a clone of Dad its Val.´ His little brother was named after the explorer and was in a good way of becoming Jor-El’s shadow, both in person and in reputation.

Kal knew there was something else for him out there. He didn’t know what and he didn’t know where but as long as he could remember he had a feeling that something within him was missing. A piece of himself yet to be found and he had a good feeling it wouldn’t be anywhere on Krypton.

Behind him, inside, came the sound of a door slamming shut which in itself was impressive as the doors were automatic to open and close by themselves when someone was near. `He is still angry then,´ Kal thought calmly.

His father’s anger was nothing new. It seemed like whatever decision Kal made his father disapproved and it had been that way ever since Kal was old enough to make his own decisions. But the announcement Kal dropped during the dinner may have caused he most severe reaction from his father yet.

`I don’t know why he is so angry. It’s not like he didn’t do it himself when he was young. He even told us about it.´ What Kal had told his family was that he had decided to go to other worlds, to search for the missing piece (that he didn’t say) and he would start with a planet well known by the Kryptonians, Earth.

Jor-El had once told Kal and Val about his own time on the primitive planet. It was clear to Kal the way his father spoke that it wasn’t his favorite topic, which is why they only heard it once. But it had stuck with Kal and he was certain that with a planet so different from his own and filled with such an amazing amount of life whatever was missing should be found there.

His father had ranted and raved, ordered and threatened but Kal couldn’t be persuaded. His brother became jealous and demanded to be allowed to go too. He went to his room to pout when the answer was no from both his parents (his father’s a little louder and harder then necessary.) Lara on the other hand smiled sadly and had a look on her face like she already knew and had been waiting for this (which made no sense what so ever to Kal) she had hugged him and whispered to him to be careful.

This was his goodbye to the city. He would leave with his ship the next day and had waited this long to tell his family because he knew his father would do whatever he could to stop him from going. This way Kal knew it was too little time for Jor-El to try anything.

The ship Kal was traveling with was usually only used to go to the nearby worlds but had been modified to make the long trip to Earth. He had put long and hard work on the ship and was proud of what it had become. He was sure it would take him to something better and he couldn’t wait for it.

---

It was raining and the world looked grey. A perfect day for a funeral and Lana had to go to two. She was one among many and dressed in black just like them. To her left was her aunt Nell, crying appropriately underneath the umbrella held by Dean, her husband. To Lana’s right was Whitney, being the dutiful boyfriend there to offer support. He too held an umbrella, black like every other one.

Lana wasn’t paying attention to the funeral. The priest would drone on and at the end she wouldn’t have any idea what he had said. Lana wasn’t paying attention in fact she did everything she could not to have to look at the two caskets. To not having to look at them she looked straight ahead, right at the Kent’s. Nell had scoffed at them being there, that age old resentment still lingering underneath the surface but Lana thought they had every right to be there.

Lana liked the Kent’s. They always treated her like a person and not like a princess, china doll or possession everyone else did. That Lana’s mother was a friend with Martha Kent made it easy to have a reason to visit their farm. Lana’s mother had been a friend with Martha Kent, Lana corrected herself. Because really, how can you still be friends when one lay six feet under ground. Having tea parties sure would be difficult. She felt like giggling at her insane thoughts but managed to stop herself, it wouldn’t be appropriate.

As if feeling that she was in someone’s mind Martha Kent looked up from where she stood with her family. Her red eyes and tear streaked face showing just how sad she was. Lana knew her own face looked nothing like that. It must have surprised many that ever since she got the news Lana hadn’t shed a tear. She just couldn’t.

It had been a week since Lewis and Laura Lang past away, violently in a car crash. Lana’s life had been turned upside down and not for the first time in her seventeen year old life.

Aunt Nell was now Lana’s guardian and she wanted Lana to move to Metropolis where Nell and Dean lived with their son. That meant selling the house her childhood home and moving to Metropolis also meant living closer to Henry Small her biological father, the first person to mess up her life. She really didn’t desire that, Henry Small was not her favorite person in the world.

But the worst was that by moving she would probably lose contact with the Kent’s. Even though she lived with her parents, up until a week ago, Martha and Jonathan Kent felt more like a mom and dad then her own did. Sarah and Daniel Kent, the two adoptive children, was the siblings Lana always wanted and never had.

A tugging on her hand brought her attention back to the funeral. She noticed people turning to walk away and guessed that it was over. She walked with Whitney to his car and he brought her to her house where the wake would be held.

As the hours past she had to accept countless condolences from various people and by the end of it she felt like screaming. She was relieved when people started to leave. But then it happened.

Jonathan Kent and his family had just walked over to her. She knew what they were going to say and for once didn’t mind. But then the door opened and everyone turned to see who it was. Lana actually heard Jonathan growl in anger.

“What is he doing here?”

Lana looked behind Jonathan and saw who had walked in; the person who was responsible for her new title as orphan, Lex Luthor. The bald man wore a black suite that probably cost more then the funeral did. Seeing him there Lana had no idea how to react. The official report of the crash said it was faulty breaks on Lex’s Porsche and a freak accident that the Lang’s car was in the way when Lex tried to avoid hitting a roll of barbwire on the road. That Lex was driving over the speed limit, talking to his phone and not paying attention to the road was just mentioned in passing as nothing serious. Neither was it mentioned that the breaks worked perfectly when he stopped the car from going over the bridge they were on. The Lang’s wasn’t as lucky. Lex hit them in the side and pushed them into the railing, which broke, and into the river where they drowned. Lex didn’t get much as a warning for his driving and escaped with a broken collarbone, a totaled Porsche and nothing else.

Luckily Lana didn’t have to deal with Lex. Nell saw him and grew angry in seconds.

“Get out of the house!”

“I just wanted to pay my respect.”

“Respect?” a bitter laugh, “you killed them you bastard and I don’t care what the repost said; it’s because of you that my sister and her husband are dead. Get out!

Luckily for him Lex left but not before nodding to Lana, `like they shared something,´ she thought angrily.

Lana felt pretty low right now. But what she didn’t now was that her life was about to improve and that improvement would arrive in just about two weeks.

Chapter 2

The cylinder shaped ship flew through space as steadily as water flow. By Earth standards it surely didn’t look like a spaceship should. It wasn’t huge with an outlandish design and tons of dangerous and advanced weaponry. Nor did it have a captain and crewmembers and soldiers ready to battle numerous enemies it might come across. It was just cylinder shaped, silver in color and one-man made.

The inside was small, claustrophobic small. There was no room to move around, in fact the only thing the captain/crewmember/soldier could do was to lie down and then lie there waiting for the journey to end. To fit the ship with the necessary control panel it had to be put in the walls.

This ship had been Kal-El’s home for the last six weeks (earth weeks). To survive the journey he was put to sleep, only allowed to be awake every sixth day to make sure the coordinates were correct and for some computer-generated lessons on earth and it’s culture. To go through it all in depth would of course take too much time so the lessons were only an overview.

He was awoken for the last time a day away from the planet. Even though the ship would be able to land by itself safely Kal felt better being in control. As the ship approached the blue and green planet a warning lamp started flashing, he was now entering the zone in which the ship would be able to be seen by Earth telescopes. He pushed a button under the flashing lamp and waited. The lamp continued flashing. Concerned he pushed the button again. Now it stopped. He let out the breath he had been holding and relaxed, so far so good, flashed through his mind. The button turned the ship invisible.

Closer and closer he came to his destination and the control panel started lighting up, telling him many things, both crucial and unnecessary. As the ship didn’t have a window he couldn’t see outside but the ship informed him that they were soon passing the sun, the yellow sun. That was an unnecessary piece of information as he could feel the effects the yellow sun had on him. The Kryptonian scientists had done intensive research on the effects different suns had on people from Krypton. The yellow one being the more powerful and Kal couldn’t wait to get out and feel it without anything in the way.

Everything went as it should up until he reached the planets atmosphere and took over the flying. As he entered the ship started shaking, the flames surrounding the ship made it difficult to steer and the gravity pulled the ship down faster then Kal had intended. Basically Kal could do nothing but wait to crash and tried to prepare.

The journey down seemed to go on forever and Kal had only the numbers from the ship to rely on. When they told him the ground was nearing he braced himself…

…then he crashed.

Metropolis, Lionel Luthor’s Office.

Lionel Luthor sat by his desk going over his progress in Smallville. He now had almost all the land he required except for those few hardheaded farmers that refused to sell, the blasted Kent’s leading the group.

Sending Lex there to work directly at the scene hadn’t worked, instead had become something of a hindering as the reports of his only son’s misconduct over several matters came back to him. The death of two towners was only the tip of the ice-berg that made Lex’s list of misdoings.
Now Lionel suspected to have to use different methods of getting those lands. Lex would of course have to stay in Smallville, it would be a good lesson for him and he may be of help for Lionel still.

As Lionel was thinking of which of his many contacts that would be best to use in dealing with his problems in Smallville the doors to his office burst open and a short, chubby middle-age man ran in. He was clearly existed and was waiving a brownish folder in his right hand.

“Mr. Luthor, Mr. Luthor,” he had to stop to catch his breath and was leaning at the end of Lionel’s desk.

“I do not appreciate being interrupted in this manner especially when no previous appointment has been made, Mr. Jung,” Lionel said coldly, glaring at the man.

“Of… course. I… apologize… but this… you have… to see,” Jung said between each inhaling. He held out the folder towards his employer who took it after a lingering stare.

Lionel opened it and looked through the photos in it. “What am I looking at?” he wondered.

“An object we spotted on the way past the sun. We only managed to get these pictures before it disappeared,” Jung explained.

Lionel turned to stare at the man and silently told him to continue.

“We calculated its destination coming right towards Earth and kept an eye out to see if it reappeared and about an hour ago something went through the atmosphere,” Lionel spotted those pictures and looked at the fireball in them. “It crashed here in the States, Kansas, in a town called Smallville to be exact,” Jung continued.

Lionel reached for his phone and called his pilot to prepare his chopper. He then stood up and together with Jung walked out of the room, while saying, “We are going on a trip, Jung. Ever been to Smallville? It’s a lovely town, very quaint.”

Left on the desk was the images of a cylinder shaped object looking suspiciously like a ship.

---

Two weeks had gone by since her parent’s funeral and Lana had all but moved in with the Kent’s. Nell left her alone that day, having to go back to Metropolis, and Lana couldn’t take being alone in her parent’s house. So she had gone over to the Kent’s that night, being neighbors it hadn’t taken much time, and they let her sleep in their guestroom. And she stayed. They didn’t seem to want her to leave and she didn’t want to so she stayed.

She was now sitting in the back seat of the Kent’s truck having left Smallville and was going back to the farm. To her right was Sarah, the nine year old was clearly bored out of her mind and was looking out the window. To her left was Daniel and Lana could feel his eyes every once in a while on her before quickly darting away. She suspected that the fourteen year old had a crush on her. Up front were of course Jonathan and Martha.

They just passed the `You are now leaving Smallville´ sign when Sarah tensed.

“Look,” she called out and pointed up to the sky. A natural reaction was of course to look where she was pointing and Lana couldn’t believe her eyes. Coming towards them was a ball of fire. A large ball of fire. Well it wasn’t coming directly at them but more towards the cornfield they were driving by. Jonathan stopped the car and told everyone to duck and cover their heads. Lana leaned over Sarah as she was closest to the window and Lana suspected that it would blow with the impact. So she covered the girl with herself.

The sound of the impact was nothing Lana had ever heard before. For a few second after Lana couldn’t hear at all, there was nothing but silence. And then her hearing came back. Sarah was crying from fear but was unhurt. Jonathan and Martha kept asking if everyone was alright. Lana had to carefully brush away the shattered glass but nodded when they asked her.

“Dad, what was that?” Daniel wondered with a voice that gave out more then once.

“I don’t know son,” Jonathan answered.

The dust that flew up began to settle and they walked out of the car and over to the field. In awe they stared at the object on the ground.

“Oh my god,” Martha whispered.

A hatched opened and Lana felt like fainting as she saw a hand reach out from what could only be a ship.

Great update, this is really getting interesting. I wonder how Lana is going to react to Clark? Will she be terrified of him?

Lionel's involvement can only mean trouble, I think. Can't wait to see what he gets up to. Nice also that The Kents managed to have children (adopted?). This is a wonderful read so far.

I really like this.
Its VERY DIFFERENT from the other fics I've read, because Krypton did not explode and Clark/Kal-El grew up there and came up with his own destiny of wanting to protect people and making his own decisions with out any influence of his father Jor-El.
And Lex being responsible for the death of Lana's parents is a new twist, as well as the Kents already haveing adopted kids.
I like that from the get go that there isnt going to be any secret between Clark/Kal-El and Lana. Atleast I hope not.
And I'm also very interested in what kind of relationship he will have with Lex and if Lex will be a good, trustworthy person, unlike his father.
Cant wait to read the next update.
