This is a 90 second spot that pays tribute to one of my favorite films Underworld starring Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman. The video showcases the best action scenes from the film, examines Selene and Michael's characters, and also focuses on the romance between them.

Thanks Lane!
I am happy that you enjoyed it. Yeah Avid has great overlay capability. It was great to be able to cut something on Avid again. It had been like three months since I last touched one. But now that I have got my own Avid system, I am sticking with it. Nothing else out there beats it in my opinion. Thanks for saying it was perfect. Another reason why I like Avid so much is because of all the keyboard shortcuts that you have at your disposal. It makes you a much faster editor. This video only took me like 8 hours to do.
I will have to see if I can get you a full size version. Unfortunately I only have the uncompressed 400MB version and the small version I put on YouTube. The small 35MB version looks great quality wise on YouTube. But not so much at fullscreen on Quicktime. I have to see if I can re-export out of Quicktime Pro and get a version that is 100MB or less.
Thanks again!

Great video!
Underworld is just so awesomly cinematic to begin with it looks even better in a nice trailer form.
Before I get started, may I suggest dailymotion to host your vids? The quality is impressive as is the picture size.
Great choice of song, dark, epic, and adrenaline. All three fit the movie VERY well. Reminds me of the first vid I ever did, to the same song. Unfortunately I don't vid much anymore.
I think the timing was done very well, in terms of how long each clip is played for. Very nice.
Lane beat me to it, but the overlays were awesome. Just the right placement and timing to make it successful.
Really great balance between the action scenes and the romance scenes.
Normally I like to add more feedback but I can't think of anything else I'd like to say, but the montage was awesome.
This makes me want to rewatch Underworld! I'll have to add it to my netflix queue.
The reason I especially loved this montage is because theres a glimpse of Sophia Myles playing a vampire in the beginning, and she plays a vampire on Moonlight lol.
5/5!

Thanx for the link to the full version Ryan!!!
I must say its a good 10x better watching it in that quality...You miss alot of the overlays and little things in the streaming version...
Excellant quality for 25 meg....Allthough there was a little interlacing pattern now and then....
It looks like you have a good thing in avid...
Ive actually had express for forever but found it difficult to get anywhere...Maybe Ill try again someday!!!! :D

I actually have tried putting several things on Dailymotion but they are always rejected for copyright violation. It sucks too because DM has a limit of 150GB instead of the usual 100. I tried again with my Underworld video just to see, and it was rejected for copyright. A lot of sites are doing this these days, including MySpace and IFilm as well.

Hey Lane!
Glad that you liked the full version. Yeah the interlacing is one issue I just have not been able to tackle with Avid. For some reason whenever I cut a video on it, and do the final export, there is a tad bit of interlacing in the white flash transitions. None of my instructors can seem to tell me why this is either. Yeah I was suprised how good the quality was with 25MB to. I think what I will do from now on, is use Vegas in an exporting capacity only. I also still like to use Vegas for all of my music editing too. I will cut a song in Vegas, and then render out the MP3 in edited form, and edit to that. Makes things easier.
Avid is freaking awesome man. You should mess around with Express more. There are a lot of things that will benefit you.
1) You can map your keyboard to have all the things you do on a regular basis. Imagine never having to go to a menu and using a mouse.
2) You can save FX that you create in Avid and not have to recreate them over and over. This is especially great with transitions because of the fact that you can create a specific bin called Quick Transitions and anytime you go to do a transition, the one you created shows up in the drop down menu. There is a button you hit on the keyboard to bring this up.
3) You can navigate through the timeline a lot faster and jump from edit point to edit point.
4) You have the replace edit function which is my absolute favorite. What I do is go through and make add edits to where I would make cuts on an empty filler track. Then all I do is bring a clip up in the source monitor, mark an in where I want the clip to start, and then hit replace edit on the empty filler porition. This automatically replaces the footage in the timeline with the clip.
5) Trimming and slipping is unmatched in Avid. You can trim in real time using JKL. Slipping is when you leave a clip where it is, but you can change the content of the clip, without effecting the duration. Say you have a clip in the timeline, and you want to go to a different place in the footage. Instead of having to drag out to find it, you simply go into slip mode, and j/k/l through the clip to get to where you want it.
6) FX work and keyframing is a lot easier to work with in Avid.
7) There is an option called Fade Effect, where you can tell the Avid how many frames you want the effect to fade up and down without ever having to add any dissolves.
My only complaint with Avid is the time it takes to import material. 15-30 minutes for one QT file. The size of the file is 2-4 GB's. But I am used to be able to just drop it into the Media Pool in Vegas and edit with it.

Thanks for the link to your new underworld vid Ryan
Very awesome job on this one. The song was a great choice for the vid since it worked so well with the intensity of the movie scenes. Awesome scene selection and editing throughout the vid. Also very cool effects too. The overlays you did were especially effective.
Awesome job with the opening section of the vid. The way you edited it there worked particularly well with the song’s intro music. And I really liked how you used action packed scenes that also gave a quick overview of he whole film. Nice transition to the next section of the vid at 25. The overlay there and at 27 were really effective in flowing smoothly into that section following the intro part. The ghosting on her face was another very cool touch.
From 44-52 was also really well put together. Awesome job getting those action scenes to flow so well there. I also thought you handled the next verse section very effectively (54-112). It was a great idea to use that part to show the romantic part of their relationship. Really impressive stuff on the ending fight scene as well. Again awesome job editing to the music there and great scene selection with the action scenes you used, that really made for an awesome ending!
Very awesome vid Ryan!

Hey Ryan thanks for the link to your Underworld spot, awesome work as always bro. Now unlike you I thought the sequel was a big step up from the original. I didn't really like KB's acting at all when I watched the first one, to this day I think she was a bad choice for the part and it damaged the movie for me (lol). And the weak story (to me anyway) of the original didn't help matters either. My favorite part of the film by far was at the very end, when that dude became the Hulk...I guess they shouldn't have made him angry. Evolution was a much better movie overall in my opinion...now on to your video:
Amazing editing, your fast cuts to the beats were timed beautifully throughout, and as always fantastic scene selection. Nice song choice as well, had the right feel for the film.
- Loved the "fear in me" bit @ 25 where you overlaid fighting scenes while he was asleep, thus showing the "fear in him", lol (however it wasn't clear what or who were in the scenes...)
- "Here it comes" @ 32 with Michael falling just after "I fall" was awesome, loved the editing to the music
- Awesome overlay for "face to face" @ 33 with the moon shot, lol
- Loved Selene twisting around with the gun about to shoot @ 48, awesome with the song
- "Push me away" @ 56 with the Selene CU is one of my fave parts, and I also loved your scene choice for the next push me away a bit later @ 106 with her walking out the door...great stuff
- Awesome editing to the song and beats @ 108 with Selene turning around on "see"
- Just loved how you edited the Hulk fight scene from 121-23 ending with the fist getting caught, haha so great with the song
- 123-125, loved how you timed up Selene's attacks with each word of "no one can see", lol classic
(139, that dude falling apart after getting sliced is such a ripoff of a scene in Johnny Mnemonic, lol)
Fantastic spot Ryan, really fun and really made Underworld seem like a slam dunk of a movie (which it wasn't, lol not for me anyways). Really awesome video bro.

Thanks for the great feedback Chokito. I am happy that you enjoyed it, To answer your question about the song, I cut it down. It is 3 1/2 minutes long, and I always edit all the songs I use. I appreciate the compliment on my use of overlays. Avid is really great when it come to overlays and other effect work. Yeah the effect at .30 is what is referred to as "ghosting". You overlay a scene on top of itself, drag the copied clip a bit out of focus, and then have it zoom in. This creates a ghosting like effect.
Thanks again for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it!

Hey Keith!
Thanks for the awesome feedback as always man. I am happy that you enjoyed it. Yeah the song just seemed to fit with Underworld. Plus I have always liked the song and I wanted to use it in a video anyways.. LOL Thanks for the compliment on my overlays and FX work in general. It was cool to be able to take advantage of what Avid can do in that department. It is cool you liked the fact that I threw in some of the romantic stuff as well. Some of the lyrics in the song are geared towards a relationship and it seemed to really fit with the relationship of Michael and Selene. I also really appreciate you saying I did a good job editing to the music and working in the action stuff too. This was a fun video to make. Thankfully due to Avid's keyboard shortcuts, I was able to get it done in like 8 hours so it didn't take too much time to make.
Thanks again man.

Hey Xander!
Thanks for the awesome feedback bro. I am happy that you enjoyed it. Now thanks to the fact that I have my own Avid, I can get stuff done a lot quicker. The whole video only took about 8 hours. With Avid you have access to a lot of keyboard shortcuts that really speeds things up. I could get a video done on Avid in 1-2 days that would probably take a week or two on Vegas. I have had to learn to get faster, because all the instructors ever did at school was stress speed. Sorry to hear you didn't like the first Underworld. I actually really liked it. My two favorite types of movie monsters were always vampires and werewolves. So when a movie focuses on a war between them it is cool to me. I also actually liked Kate in the role simply because it was different from her other stuff. I do have a slight bias though because I just find her sexy as hell. I actually didn't care for the sequel.. LOL
I appreciate the compliment on my editing and song choice. The song seemed just for the movie and I always wanted to use it anyways. I did have to cut it down to under two minutes though because there were a few parts of the song that didn't work with the feel of the video.
Yeah the "fear in me" part was fun. It seemed like a cool way to open the character study section by showing Michael reliving Lucian's memories. Plus with the overlay you were able to see both him and the flashbacks at the same time. Just seemed like a better way to go. The moon overlay was one of my favorites. Happy you enjoyed it. At .48 with Selene and the gun, I actually had to speed that up because it was originally in slow motion. Both push me away sections were all scene manipulation. I always try to work in a little bit of scene manipulation in any video I do. I am happy you noticed that I had Selene's blows land on each word. That was kind of a tough one to time up.
Thanks again for the awesome feedback Xander..
P.S..
I got a crack up out of your Johnny Mnemonic comment. Saw that movie years ago. It showcased more of Keanu Reeve's "stellar" acting..

It's funny how that works but this is true for most people. Usually when someone really loves the first or original movie in a series, everything afterward can't help but disappoint. And if someone didn't really like the original in a series, chances are they'll find the sequels better (as in my case). Human nature, lol. This is true for seasons of TV shows as well.

Haha yeah classic Keanu....the Matrix movies were a lot more watchable because the character of Neo is supposed to come off as emotionless or very machine-like....even Keanu can pull off "walking talking robot". lol
