Hey, just wondering if anyone has read the book Animal Farm. I read it last week, and I thought it was really good. It is not often you come across a good book on political issues.

Oh dear.... I thought it was terrible. We had to read it in 9th grade... Most of us didnt' really understand it . It was that bad, but ... eh.. I didn't like it. I bought the movie for a dollar on clearance at Walmart though! :rotfl:

Heehe! I understood it, because for about two weeks Mr. Dunn gave us lessons on the history of Russia! :rotfl:

Remember that stupid movie he showed us on the Czar of Russia? And the fat lady in the pool! he's like "Look at that thing! She doesn't even need any water to float!!" :rotfl:

Great book! I loved it. Its been years since I've read it though. I always remember "All animals are equal, but some are more equal then others" or something to that effect.

What was there to not understand? Some of the books we read in highschool were a bit hard to read (Tess of the d'urbervillles, Moby dick, I hated Ethan Frome with a passion) but Animal Farm? Its like saying Dr. Seuss's The Lorax or Butter Battle book was difficult to understand.

You know Napoleon was a liar, right? You would read what really happenned in the beginning of the book, and Napoleon would completely lie his face off later.

 Thanks for demeaning my intelligence. I said SOME of us didn't understand it, but I did. Just some of the kids in my class didn't understand the symbolism.

US implies you along with your class.

But still, the symbolism isn't that complex, no more complex then Aesop's fables. Heck, "Sword in the stone" dealt with more complex forms of government and I've yet to hear anyone claim they don't understand it.

There's lot of stuff in Animal Farm to not like, ranging from how stupid everyone other then Napoleon acts to implying that those in power are incapable of acting for the greater good, but Complexity?

Here's a question though. What would have happenned if it was Snowball, not Napoleon, who trained the attack dogs. Would things have happenned differently?

...Whoa. I've never read ANY of those books, aside from Animal Farm, which was okay. I disliked reading most of the books that we got assigned to read, including this one, but I thought the story overall was pretty good. The animals were good use of symbolism. But I just don't care for the writing itself.

Know what we read in high school? Maus, The Life of Pi, a bunch of books in tenth grade I didn't read that weren't that hard to read anyway, and we were supposed to read 1984, but the teacher didn't like it so he didn't make us read it.

I mean, overall I don't think we really got a good representation of literature in any of my Lit classes.

Actually, I said MOST OF US, which means NOT ALL OF US. WHICH ALSO MEANS NOT ME.

Just... be quiet! No one cares about how complex you think the book is as how complex a bunch of 14 year olds think it is! I honestly could care less about the book, but stop making it seem like I'm an idiot, which I'm not.

I do not give a fudge monkey about Snowball vs. napoleon. I didn't like the book. I only posted in this thread in the first place because my friend started it. The end.

And also, just because you're probably like 1000 years older than me, don't make it seem like you're soooooooooo much smarter than me. Because you're probably not.

Take a chill pill, sweetie. Eleanor Roosevilt once said "Nobody can make you feel inferior without your permission."

It wasn't my intention to make you feel like an idiot. My intention was to discuss "Animal Farm". And in a thread about "Animal Farm" I thought a discussion on Whether or not the material was difficult was a valid topic.

You and your classmates think the book is too complex, while I thought it was rather simple. Feel free to post proof that Animal farm was too complex, either the word choice, or subject matter or whatever.

:lol:Interesting choice of words because the book tends to portray Napoleon as a fudge monkey, always fudging the truth, but I digress.

If you really want to help your friend out then help with the topic. I'm certain your friend would love to have a thread she started be full of interesting conversation.

no, I'm probably like 20 million years older then you, give or take a few millenia :p

As to smarter, well... if you're really interested in proving how smart you are then join the Ksite book club. After all, anyone can say they're smart, but few people can prove it. And discussing things with smart people is always more fun then discussing things with dumb people.

No, your intention was to make yourself seem superior, and I'm pretty sure almost everyone would agree with me. You compared my classmate's comprehension level to a Seuss book. And you did not try to start a discussion on whether or nat the material was complex, you tried to start a discussion on proving that you're better than a bunch of freshman. Which you are not.

Stop grouping me in with my class!!!!!!!!!!!! I have said repeatedly that I UNDERSTOOD IT PERFECTLY. I have also said repeatedly that SOME OF THE KIDS IN MY CLASS DID NOT. You're doing it right now; saying that I didn't understand it and then saying how simple you thought it was. You're just trying to make yourself seem better than everyone for some reason... i don't know... maybe you have no friends?

Stop being so rude and condescending. I understand you have valid- albeit patronizing- opinions, but do not try to boost yourself up by trying to make yourself seem better.

^^I agree completely with you. Kia has not done anything to prove otherwise. He seems to enjoy belittling teenagers to make himself feel more intelligent. Way to go, Kia!

Kia's a guy?!??!? Man, I need to start looking at the Gender thingies. I thought he was a girl all along! He sounds like a girl!

I will stop posting on this thread now.

i had to read it a few years ago for school. At first i didnt think it was really that good, but looking back it's a pretty clever idea of how they wrote about political stuff through farm animals.

I loved this book. It's a nice way of explaining political theory in a way younger students can understand. The well-intentioned beginning, followed by the growing corruption, ending with Napoleon and friends becoming just as bad as the farmers they overthrew. Perfect analogy for how so many totalitarian regimes get started.

I reread Animal Farm about a year ago for a college course. It really is really good.

Gawd, this book is epic. *applauds* I never read it in high school (can you believe it?) but I did read it a few years ago on a plane. Interesting enough, and great premise.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK

As for those who didn't enjoy it I find that most people who don't like it had to read it in school. I read it on my own after finishing a bunch of years of AP social studies so it wasn't confusing for me. Most people read it in the middle of global studies so its really hard to follow

Yeah, George Orwell is demented alright. Animal Farm was a great book, but it was freaky. As was 1984. It is the only book that I've read that I had a sudden urge to throw in a fire. His books are creepy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
