View Full Version : Does anyone kind of wish Smallville would get cancelled?

I discovered Smallville during season 2 about three episodes in when I was a freshman in college. I never watched television in high school, despite being a Superman fan, so I for the most part was unaware of what Smallville had to offer.
After I watched two episodes, I downloaded the entire first season and the episodes of the second season that I had missed. And it was great. I loved it. And as a result, I made a commitment. A life-bond with which I would watch the show until the day it was canceled. Unfortunately, I am desperately hoping that day comes soon.
I never wanted it to be like this. Sure, I thought the Freaks of the Week were a little dumb and other aspects of the show were off the mark, but they were minor quarrels, really. For the most part, Smallville was in my top 3 "Can't Miss" shows. Season 2 kicked it up a notch with Rosetta having Christopher Reeve explain the origins of Clark. Excellent. Season 3 was also rather interesting with all the cave stuff but I could see it stumble a bit.
And here's where everything starts falling apart. Characters start acting inconsistently, whether that by a nature of the change in writing of the show or just by the fact that there is just now so much to cover that it becomes difficult to stick with what has been established. Lionel almost seems more at home on a WWE event with the amount of times he switched sides.
Yet, I continue to watch. There are few glimmering moments of hope in every season, although I have to admit they are becoming fewer and fewer. Frankly, I wish they would just go ahead and wrap up the show so I can be released from my commitment.
I am sure some of you will be saying "You hate it, just stop watching." Valid point. But the fact is, I do not hate the show. As I said, there are a few moments every season that make the show worth watching.
It is possible Millar and Gough get their acts together and start stringing together a much more coherent narrative with more complex character interactions instead of doing things because they feel they will serve best for that particular episode but then be forgotten the next. Although I think this is an unlikely scenario.
So, I lay the question: does anyone feel the same way I do about the show? Sometimes looking at it like a suffering animal that needs to be put out of its misery? With the addition of Supergirl I cannot help but look at it as adding another layer of unnecessary character interactions onto the show. Bringing someone out of the woodwork like, "Hey comic fans, you should watch, we have SUPERGIRL now!" As HOT as Laura Vandervoort is (and dear lord she is), I just don't feel she is necessary at this juncture. I do not feel that Clark is on a road to become Superman at this point, I feel like someone is just going to be like, "Here Clark, you're Superman." as he never seems to figure things out on his own.
I still appreciate the show, I do. It's just I see so much wasted potential here that could be a really really great show. To me, it's rather sad.

The show is not falling apart
I don't want it to end.
Seasons 1-3 have a certain feel and appeal to them that 4-6 don't, but story lines are much deeper, and the show is still very entertaining.
Season 4 has its own vibe, and then I think 5-6 are similar, but good.
But no I don't want Smallville to ever end.

I agree w/ seannyd that Smallville has so much more potential!
I don't wish it would be cancelled!! There are only 2 seasons left and I think the last season will really be the best yet!! So the last thing about smallville the fans will remember will be the greatest season finale ever! Seanny- don't give up on it!!

some days I'd say yes, but most I'd say no. I didn't think it would be a good idea to go into S7 but obviously the writers backed themselves into a corner, which would be hard for them to get out of in 1 season without having it look too contrived and forced. o well what r u gonna do.?? I'll never stop watching either; though I hate Jimmy olsen with passion that burns hotter than krypton's red sun, I'd say this season almost makes up for S4 & parts of 5

I don't wish that Smallville be cancelled, but
if it can not be upgraded to the level that it should be, then I do think it should be put out of it's misery next season.
Most of the time, the episodes are disappointing and I would have been better off going to the gym. On the other hand, sometimes they make a good episode. I do see Kara as a distraction from the main line of the story and aimed for the 'she is sooo hottt!' demographic. Sorry, I wish I could be more optomistic on this program, but I am not. However, I will be very happy if I am proven wrong about the coming season.

My added thoughts:
It should end after Season 7 assuming:
No more Michael Rosenbaum
- Sure they could go without Lex or replace him but that would be dumb
No more Kristen Kruek
- People seem to hate the Lana character on this board but I like her.

I dont wish it cancelled, but I do think s7 should be the last season. If they go for an 8th than they really need to step it up some more with storylines and character development. If we get another season of s1 mopey Clark, than I would be really disappointed.

I don't want it to get cancelled, because I really want to see it come to its conclusion, you know, Superman and all. But after last season, how the characters regressed, how the story turned into a soap opera, I'm not sure it's really worth watching anymore.
I've heard that TPTB have the last 10 episodes of the series already planned. My guess is those eps will be pretty good. If the first few episodes of Season 7 aren't better in quality than Season 6 I might just stop watching and wait until I hear the show is ending. Then I'll come back for the last 10 eps.

It is declining but... I would be sad if it got canceled. I would miss all the faces.

Being cancelled would be worst crap on TV history. Why? Because Smallville, unlike any other show on TV, has the ending already written and people watch the show to see the journey toward that ending.
BUT it's certainly a mediocre-to-good show, it many problems, we endured through many BS. So, I still defend that the show should had ended when it was supposed to, back in season 5.

I don't want it cancelled but I feel it should end in Season 8.

All right, I think I may have not fully explained my position. By canceled, I mean at the end of this season being the series finale. I certainly do not want to be left hanging, I just want the series to call it a day and give us a proper finale.
I cannot argue that some people still love every episode of the show and it continues to be their personal favorite on TV. And that is absolutely, 100% fine. People have different tastes and I am not one to criticize them for what they enjoy.
What I do not believe is that anyone could POSSIBLY argue the position that Smallville is even remotely well-written show. Indeed there are moments that are great, but looking at the series as a whole, it is so schizophrenic that the writing cannot be considered "good". The characters are so inconsistent with their own feelings and motivations and are never surprised when a person acts completely opposite their position in the episode prior and then goes back to the original position.
What I want more than anything else is a sense of consistency; that everything makes sense in the context of this version of the Superman universe, and I do not see that happening. I certainly do want there to be a proper send off, and I think that Season 7 is the time to do it.

I certainly agree about the writing, Ihonestly think i could do a better job than than them sometimes. My girlfriend dont watch it with me anymore because she says she feel like shes watching a soap opera sometimes, then other times shes like "is this smallville, they're gettin a little out there arent they?"
I have recentlly felt this way too more and more, and with the news of supergirl, im really really afraid, and kind of want to see the series wrap up so we can have closure with the mythology of Clark Kent before he became superman. But i'll have to wait and see, like i have said before, good writing can solve anything.

Smallville reminds me of Sliders in terms of it's unfulfilled potential I don't wish for it to be canceled but I just hope Gough/Miller finish it after this season.

If someone says its a soap opera to me I just say "yup" and keep watching. I could care less how other people think about what I watch.

I love Smallville and for that simple reason I don't want it to get cancelled. Sure just like any other show it has it ups and downs, nonetheless is still is my favorite show! and when it does come to an end, I want it to end with a huge BANG!

I'll admit, it sucks that my wife will no longer watch it because it's so sad and mopey all the time. So much so that she didn't even TRY to watch Justice. They need to come full throttle with mythos and superhero stuff and believable character development instead of schizophrenic mood swings.

NO WAY! NO HOW!
I'll admit it began to lack some of the luster it had for me, mainly because of the Clana regurgitation , but it looks like S7 might turn things around, especially with Lana gone and Kara on board. Clark will have to act like a parent figure for her and so we may actually see some maturity on his part. :)

The problem is it will lack a lot without KK and MR in Season 8 and will probably be the one everyone remembers as the shark crap season, but without smallville what will we have on fall shedule.
Moonlight looks good, reaper looks cheesy, supernatural is awesome but I wonder how many seasons past 3 they will go.
No more Veronica mars, Heroes isn't worth the credit it gets, Jericho is likely to be canceled again even though ashley scott deserves better.
Overall its going to like it was when Buffy/Angel went off the air where there wasn't a whole lot on for a while.

I still think SV is great, and I'll be sad when it ends, but I think either S7 or 8 should be the last. And I too hope those final 10 send SV out w/a bang.

No the show is not falling apart. But I totally agree with you on the Supergirl thing. Clark can take hold of his destiny on his own and he certainly doesn't need his cousin to help him in the process. Sure she can teach him a few tricks and tell him more about his orgins, but after that she needs to be gone.

I agree with kryptongirl I think Clark needs to face what he is on his own on his own terms. He is what he is and he needs to embrace that and become at peace with himself before SV can end. I think he should start his training, like Jor-El wanted him to, that would make him face who and what he is, then the series can end.

I never want Smallville to end, but it will, so I say it end after the 8th season. I'm seriously hoping that Clark could learn to fly by the end of season 7, and TPTB can change their minds about the no flights no tights rule and just give us Superman for the final season or at least Clark flying from time to time.
