Its always bothered me how people get powers from the meteor rocks, sure its given Clark a steady supply of punching bags over the years but I would like some sort of eplination as to WHY the rocks gave people powers.

I don't know if I'm pulling this out of my butt but somewhere along the line I thought I remember extended exposure to Kryptonite caused cancer in humans, I always thought this would be a interesting explination to why people got the powers (kinda like Ryan's ability to read minds came from his tomer).

Let me know what you think.

the reason the rocks give people special powers is that the meteor rock give off radiation. this radiation hurts clark, but gives humans powers(in the smallville world), under the impression that in several different versions of various super hero stories, the super hero's recieved their powers from some kind of radiation. yes, in the original superman, extremely prolonged exposer to krytonite caused cancer(example is lex), but this is smallville.

But i know where you are coming from dean123. it either gives humans who are over exposed powers or gives them a case of the severe shakes. Whats the deciding factor? Who knows, lets just say Lana wore a necklace of kryptonite for most of her life, and neither got the shakes, or developed powers, while the doctor,I cant think of his name right now, worked with the stuff for some years, then got sick and ultimately died when the liquid kryptonite spilled onto him. While Chloe developes a power, and she mosty just wrote about the stuff, she wasnt really exposed to it as much as either of the ladder. In my opinion, thats where the "magical" quality of the kryptonite comes in. The 0.001% mystical element that probably comes up as "unkown" when the rocks are analyzed. Or maybe not mystical, but at least something thats not on our table of elements.

It seems like the type of exposure matters too. There has to be some kind of dramatic incident during the exposure to cause meteor-freakness. Like when Lana had visions after being involved in an explosion that released meteor rocks. It seemed like a lot of the people became infected during the actual meteor showers, when they struck the earth. Obviously, since this is science fiction, there just wouldn't be an actual scientific explanation. I think that's more Star Trek than Smallville. :)

The Jitters guy, and then later Dr. Hamilton were exposed to meteor rock cocktails that had been refined (remember, Lionel had refined the meteor rocks into bars, and then used them to perform his experiments). I just thought that meant that they were more concentrated or something. It has been a part of the comics in the past that prolonged exposure to the meteor rocks would cause harm to humans...such as Lex's hand when he wore the green ring for years. I never really thought about the fact that Lana wore the necklace, but that's a good call. I guess it's a good thing that it got taken away from her. :)

From what I have seen the meteor rocks seem to effect people depending on a combonation of area they are in and thier D.N.A.

The meteor rocks give off really harmful radiation which alters the DNA of people, and it weirdly mutates the DNA into adapting to environment factors.
Like in that episode where that person is trapped under crater lake with some meteor rock and he develops the power to draw heat from anything.
It's really ridiculous though, like say if someone were eating a bowl of jelly that had some kryptonite in it..would he become jelly man?? a human that is made up purley of purple, woobly jelly?

I would guess that the mutations it causes to their DNA makes the explanation similar to the X-Men.

As for the difference between shakes/jitters and powers, people who get fragments of solid kryponite in them or get too much exposure to liquid kryptonite get the jitters, like Earl Jenkins (thanks to kryptonite that exploded) and Dr. Hamilton (who experimented with it daily).

Here is a post in which types of freaks were discussed based on my observations:

And another that has some good followups from other users:

And here is one that lists every freak up to Subterranean:

**Note how at the time, it wasn't entirely clear if Chloe was a freak, but since then it was proven to be the case.
