View Full Version : Product Placement in Smallville

How come Smallville has never had any products that have tried to place themselves in the show? Such as in Superman II when Superman threw Zod into the big Coke sign, or in A Few Good Men when Tom Cruise said "The only thing I have to eat is Yoo-Hoo and Cocoa Puffs."

Seems like that would be a good way to make a little extra money which could pay the actors a little more, which would provide a little more insurance that they would not leave.

Do not get me wrong. I don't want product placement in our show; it would detract from the plot.

Here's an opinion I'd like to call BS on: "Product placement is an inherently bad thing."

Having real products adds realism to the world created on screen. There is nothing wrong with it.

And yes, OP, there's been plenty of it on Smallville. From The Talon Mix (nothing like pimping your own product), to Old Spice, to Yaris, and more.

No, it wouldn't. When real products are shown it adds to the plot by making the world more realistic and organic. It is the opposite of product placement, when all fake products and cans that are just labeled "Cola" are shown that detracts from the plot, because then the world is completely fake, without anything real in it.

i don't actually mind product placement. there are a few things that didn't hurt...but the line about 'take my yaris' just seemed clunky...

i guess i look at product placement neutrally. on it's own it's neither good nor bad. it just depends on how it's done...

i just thought it was funny that the OP hadn't noticed any of it. i guess it sorta proves your point about it not being all that bad...

There's been tons of product placement.
I remember those huge 'Old Spice' banners in the football stadium, in S4.....

My thoughts exactly fake product distract far more the real products do. Though they can go over kill by giving a character something they would never afford like every character driving brand new cars without any job at all to pay for them. They don't have to show them working every episode just add a comment abotu work from the different characters in random episodes.

Wow I see them all the time, like all the damn Toyota stuff lately. Chloes Yaris, Clarks new Tundra, Lois' new Camry, etc...

I agree, I like to see things that appear in the real world, although, I do think its funny how often they all get new cars.

Yeah, you kind of just have to accept it with cars, though. They can't have them driving the clunkers that most young adults would and still appeal to that same crowd. People want realism but they also want to see people living the fantasies of that realism (the real life that they could never have). I think it's fine, considering we don't really know how much money any of these characters have ever made except maybe Lex. Gabe could be loaded and we just don't know it as far as Chloe goes. :P

Yeah with Lois' Dad being a 4 Star General, I wont question that one, and im sure Chloe can afford the payments on a Yaris. I guess we dont know how much the Kents make at the farm but I guess Ma Kents new senator position could afford a $30,000 truck I just better not hear any complaints about them bein low on money like they used to when Jonathan was alive.

I remember in one of the Season 5 episodes, Lex kept using AOL e-mail and viewing videos through the AOL video player...it was so blatantly obvious.

See that's the kind of product placement that is completely harmless. In the show they had plans for Lex to check his email and view videos. He did it using a real service rather than something the show made up. It added to the show rather than detracting from it

No product placement?? There has been product placements? The contact lens in Season 6 in Vegence and Chloe's Yaris??

Who remembers Product Placement Pete?

They're usually okay w/product placement. Like in S2 when Clark was dropping a box off at the Talon that had the big Gateway logo on. Clark is always dropping stuff off there so it was good. I don't think they were as subtle w/"Go Remy Zero!" and the Talon Mix though.

I dont mind them using real life products.

What I hate is when they basicly have commerical for those products within the show.

Anyone remember last season when Lois distracted a security guard by basicly doing a 2 minute advertsiement for thr car she was driving?

Or who could forget Chloe saying "Acuvue to the rescue!" while they do an extreme closeup on the box?

Who actually carries around the cardboard container that the contact lenses came in anyway? Wouldnt peple just use those small plastic cases?
