He was alive in the future version after the same explosion. I doubt being in space would've made that much of a difference. And besides they would have made it clear if Peter was about to die.

A: peter is the most powerful on the show. he`s not a `worm.`

B. he can heal himself, even if he cylinically died, he`d just regenerate and come back to life.

I don't see how a person's power could make them kill themselves. If Peter or Ted's power is to explode, then there would probably be an explosion around them and not them actually exploding. In "Company Man," when Ted started to explode, he didn't set on fire, just everything around him.
