In "Nemesis", when Clark was trapped Lex saved his life. At the same time, he is working on project Ares to save other people's lives from the meteor freaks. But while this is going on, he had the prototype kill probably dozens of guards at the beginning of the episode, and then nonchalantly said "get some fresh guards."

So how could he be so concerned about human life on the one hand, and on the other he could care less? I thought maybe he only saved Clark because he knew he owed his life to Clark, but that wouldn't explain why he is developing project Ares. I just don't get how he could conflict with himself so much.

i think what you are describing is true evil pyschosis. where some one has no regard for right and wrong, almost lex is multipersonality. one second lex is like , please lana love me , the next i need to build an army to either take over the world or protect the world from aliens.
A psychopath is defined as a person having no concerns for the feelings of others and a complete disregard for any sense of social obligation. They seem egocentric and lack insight of any sense of responsibility or consequence. Their emotions are thought to be superficial and shallow, if they exist at all. They are considered callous, manipulative, and incapable of forming lasting relationships, let alone showing any kind of meaningful love. They typically never perform any action unless they determine it can be beneficial for themselves.

Lex is obsessed with control and manipulation of others, as such, he does and says anything at the moment if it suits his needs and he feels he has something to gain, that is his character.

Do you think Lex cares about humans?

Not sure if he killed the guards. Lex said it took 2:18 to enter and disable his best guards...

my friend, like jimmyolsenblues says, that is true evil psychosis....and i love him the most when he is like that!:D ..he rationalizes all his evil deeds for the good of humanity, yet destroys humanity to do it!..gotta love the bastard....and if the MB is gonna go all soft soon, then it's time for MB jr to fill in the shoes...and then some.

BRING ON THE PSYCHOSIS:)

or it could just be that he believes in the whole idea that sometimes you have to sacrifice the few for the good of the many. yes, historically, the lex character is just a psychopath (evil genius). but, if we are to assume he has not quite reached that point yet and some of the old (smallville-style) lex is still there, then he may still truly believe he is saving/protecting the world and sometimes you gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet. however, this does not rule out that this is a baby step on the path to evil. it rarely happens all at once as we have seen, it is usually a process wherein you can find justification for things until you are just too far gone and no longer care.

i don't think he concerned about human life.
that was only a lie to get and keep the scientist to work at the project.

all lex wants is power.
so he needs an private army so he can rule the world one day.
and because of all the "meteor freaks", he also needs a strong "meteor freaks" army, just for one reason: to protect himself.

as clark said:
ares is the god of war.
lex is preparing for something and i don't think it's saving humanity

and yes he is a psycho.
but only in the way that he is obsessed with power. he wants more and trust's no one

It seems like anything goes if "the ends justify the means" for Lex.

Yep, exactly. He claimed to be doing this experiment with the aim of saving human lives to give others that impression, but that's obviously not his intention.
