View Full Version : Erica's acting in this episode

I know this thread is probably just an invitation for Erica bashers, but I thought she was excellent in this episode, particularly in the scene with Wes Keenan when she was trying to get him to remember her.

I am a big Clois fan, but I usually think that Erica's acting, although good, is slightly subpar to Kristin's and Allison's (which is as it should be since they both have far more experience), but I thought she did a very good job in this episode.

Any thoughts?

I think Erica is actually a very good actress. Much like Kristin, the writers often place the characters in stupid situations or come up with ridiculous lines. Even Allison and John Glover, strong as their characters are, have had to try and make weak lines and/or scenarios work.

It all comes down to writing.

Erica can't act in serious and dramatic scenes. Shes good for comedy but everytime she tries to play the drama card, it comes off forced and laughable.

I thought Erica's acting was better than usual in this episode. Yeah, I agree she did very well in the scene where she was trying to get Wes to remember her. I was very happy with her performance.

I thought her acting was predictable and wooden. I don't blame her though, her lines were dull.

Erica was amazing in this episode- in the scene where Wes died, Erica gave a brilliant performance, and combined with Clark's reaction it affected me more greatly than any other scene I have watched on Smallville.

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes of the season, and the series as a whole.

i thought most of her acting was very good. :)
the scene in the barn w/Clark and Martha where she says "so you can walk in on me in the shower again?" just didn't seem to fit in and seemed a bit forced, odd, and didn't quite work. Again, probably just bad writing... :\

Her acting was pretty good. Better than usual. The crying part seemed a bit forced. But I enjoyed her interaction with the Senator.

I liked her acting...

*best part*

The end with the "Lex is going to regret this!!!" speech where she strides off in an angered & determined manner

But the 'remember... this?' speech was awesome. And so was the death scene.

I thought she was about as good as she always is. She had her moments in this episode, but her performance wasn't as impressive as some of Allison's past ones or some of KK's recent ones.

I thought she did a great job in this episode, and furthered her character development with the Superman mythology of Lois Lane. The nosy, determined reporter. Her hair though, the 80's called and they want their mall chick look back.

The scene probably woke up memories of Crimson, and that plus Clarks mom was there.

I think Erica is generally a mediocre actress.
Same with her acting in this episode.

It was believable, I guess since I know I'm supposed to believe it, but it was nothing special.

I suppose she didn't get anything interesting to show how good of an actress she is, you know what I mean?

Kristen gets a lot of crying/yelling/intense scenes.

She did such a good job for her first major episode like this. I'm looking forward to more episodes like this, but maybe with a little better writing?

Honestly Erica, and Allison aren't really comfortable looking when they have to cry. When Allison does crying scenes I don't find them very believable either.

Same thing with Tom, the only one who really pulls it off is Kristen.

Heck we should mention the knocked out scenes, I mean Lois really recovers way faster then Lana, and with a heck more adrenaline...is that signs of Lana's brain turning to mush?

To be fair, the only time I remember Tom crying was in "Vengeance" (when he saw Martha watching the video of Johnathan and he said goodbye to the camera)

Tom sobbed like a baby .. I believed every second of it.

Did he ever cry other than that episode?

He sort of cried when Martha was yelling at hime for marrying Alicia (I think).

I know he was teary-eyed, and he looked so hot sitting on that bar stool in that white shirt. His eyes were soo *drool*.........sorry what was the question again?

yea i def. thought she gave a good performance considering the lines she was given. she was convincing in how someone would speak to someone in wes's situation.

The actress just hasn't learned yet how to make the facial expressions for drama and serious scenes, but this wasn't a bad effort for her.

I thought Lois was great in all her scenes. Really good emotionality and my heart was wrenched seeing her suffer with Wes's re-appearance as a murderer, his later kidnapping of her, and him almost killing her before she made him remember who they were. The final scene where he's dead (again) was gripping, too. I really felt sorry for her. An old friend returns and is a murderer who kidnaps her and is killed again.

she did a very good job, but her crying was a bit forced. i agree with a poster above the only one who's really good at pulling off crying scenes is KK.

I though she was awful. SHe just can't sell it, I didn't feel she was really upset but rather going through the motions and I watch the clock every time she comes on screen. Her presence in the ep as the not-at-all-like-Lois always just slows the show down to a crawl. She doesn't have the acting chops to make me believe or care about what is also a very poorly written character and that's a real problem. A better actress might be able to garner some interest in a bad character but "Lois" is just dull and unlikeable. She's not funny, she's not dramatic and she has no chemistry with Tom Welling at all. There have been eps in which she's done better but Prototype was boring and dull and largely because it was "Lois" heavy.

If you ask for opinions, you should expect people are going to give them and it doesn't mean bashing because someone disagrees with you. She may be a very nice person but as an actress she's not that great, at least from what I've seen on Smallville.

Others are hitting on my same thoughts....Erica was good at trying to get Wes to remember her, but the Wes death scene seemed too forced. No tears, I don't know how emotional Erica's range is. She is good at comedy and coming off like the tough chick, though....

The crying was a bit forced, but everything else was a pretty good. She's a wonderful comedy actress. She fits the funny tom boy role quite well. She needs to work on the drama stuff, though, if she wants to get into drama roles.

Lois Lane in all adaptations has always had problems showing emotions. It always appears force no matter which one your watching, and most of the times you'll notice that they avoid crying scenes all together.

05-11-2007, 09:33 AM
I think tptb, just don't know much about the characters they are writing.

Though Allison has done some horrible crying scenes yet I don't see anyone else bashing on her? I mean the one with her and jimmy "breaking up" that was extremely horrible and looked forced, but no one said anything about that.

If you can brush it off with Chloe not being an emotional person like Lana--why can't you do the same for Lois?

05-11-2007, 10:58 AM
are we making this another Chloe vs Lois vs Lana thread again? ....

anyway, i found her acting to be great. Smallville has a strikingly talented cast that work well together on screen..most likely because of the bond they have off screen.

i didnt think her "crying" forced at all. what i did find corny about the scene with Wes was that almost every writer uses these lines (or something like them) for a death scene: "Stay with me; You can't leave me like this; I won't let you die; Don't leave me; I promise, I'll get you out of here, we'll get help" etc...

but that wasnt Erica...that was bad writing. I would like to see writers use a different combination of lines for scenes like that...it just seemes so overused in television:lol:

i think Erica has been pretty consistent in her portrayals. there are certain body actions that i see throughout that are very much "her"..for lack of a better word.

she does this "stiff shoulders" thing when she is asking her questions...if you look at the scene in the back alley with the Senator, her shoulders are quite stiff there...as is her stance. i've seen it throughout..and it is quite interesting to study..i dont know if it is an ED thing or a Lois portrayal thing...maybe a bit of both...

i say this for all of them: once they are given good scenes and scripts...they bring their A-game and deliver

Erica is growing into her role. Compared to the rest of the cast, she still seems just a bit out of place and sort of "thrown-in", but more and more with each appearance she's starting to mesh well with the others.

She did a good job this episode.

:) Erica is always great as Lois Lane, we know Lois isn´t an emocional girl, she´s not the type of girl that is sentimental and likes to spend the time crying her heart sufferings and writting love letters. I think she is a great actress and I love how she plays Lois, I believe her that she´s Lois Lane.:D :)

I do like the line "remember me", she delivered it well, but the dying scene was a bit forced and actually I thought the Wes dude was wooden, so that didn't help ED much. She really needed a better actor to feed off from.

Anyway, I agree with Meggy, how many more times to we have to hear the same lines over and over again. The "don't leave me" has become the national anthem for all death scene in all movies from all over the world.

I agree. I don't like Allison's crying scenes, they turn me off (except for mom reunion in "Tomb"), and Erica's crying I'm indifferent to (except for "Commencement") but Kristen gets me every time from S1-6. Maybe that's why the writers inflict all the tragedy on her. Oh yeah, Micheal's a good crier too! Tom.....doesn't cry, even when his face is wet.

I don't care for Erica's acting. Like someone else said...she's ok with comedy...but when it comes to anything serious or with a little drama...she's not very good. She acts with forced emotion and passion...it never appears natural like with KK and AM.

Lois Lane always has problems showing her emotions, let alone cry tears. I think Erica has always been spot on when the scenes needed her to be emotional, and still trying to hold back and choke her tears like in Commencement, Tomb and Justice. Prototype is no exception.

i liked erica in the episode.
i am happy they played her as a character , not a sex pot.
she is very pretty and i am all for gorgeous women on my tv, but on smallville, its uncomfortable sometimes watching tv with my 11 year old son.
so i am happy , lois was treated in a different way then just her looks.

I can't think of the epi name at the moment, but I thought she was very convincingly creeped out and scared in that Supernatural-like episode of Chloe's (last season, you know, inhabited with a ghost).

I agree with another poster, the writers give Lois some really crappy lines sometimes!

The problem with the way they've written Lois is since they write her as a joke most of the time, people can't take her seriously when it comes time for her to do a dramatic scene. I was not emotionally invested in her past relationship with Wes. so I really couldn't feel too much for Lois. Plus, it seemed silly. They got drunk once and kissed? So now Lois is driven forward to do bigger and better things, whatever. Big deal. The whole plot line is dumb. The thing is, its not really Erica's fault, its the writing. If Lois had been more than just comedy relief since the beginning I think she would be alot more believiable as the character.
