Although Lionel wasn't as decadently diabolical in this ep, his ability to push his agenda even from a hospital bed is impressive.

Lana threatened to kill him (and started to try) and he coolly said just one sentence "I was protecting Clark" that both stopped her from proceeding and didn't give any information away! he is by far still a formidable enemy.

He didn't seem worried about his safety - does he not think Lana will try again, or push him for info on Clark to the point that he has to shut her up? In the old days, he'd just have her killed or thrown in belle reve!

Plus, Lex still looks troubled whenever Lionel reveals his secrets -like Project Aeres existence - even LEX doesn't know how dear old daddy discovers his skeletons! Lex is still waiting for the retribution for killing the doctor on his wedding day.

Martha reveals in the barn that she still doesn't trust Lionel. I thought for a while she was fooled.

Welcome Back MB! For however long, that is....

You're right but what did stop him in his tracks was the threat of suggesting to Martha that Lionel used her son as leverage to force Lana to marry Lex. That seemed to hit the mark. She found his Achilles Heel - well done on her part.

Oh yeah! Good catch! His eyes got really big when she said that. Don't want your grumpy daughter-in-law to ruin the good ole boy image he's building to woo the widow Kent onto a bale of hay... hopefully not in the loft, there is too much near-nooky up there... after all Shelby is got to be napping there or something.

I loved the part where Martha affirms how she feels about Lionel. That while she sees good in him she isnt completey stupid about his stripes. (y)

Lionel could care less about what Martha thinks of him now. Maybe for a period in season 5 he did since he didn't have his master plan at the time, but now he doesn't. Not only that, but Martha may even understand Lionel's logic for using Clark as leverage. I don't think she wants Clark getting entangled any more in the Lex-Lana web. If it truly was an empty threat, which remains to be seen, then Martha would have no reason to get mad. That's just the way Lionel is. He doesn't give a crap about what everyone thinks of him. That's how he became so successful.

I don't think it was his intentions, but he was also finally forcing Lana to completely carry out her bad decisions and deal with their consequences, no matter how bad Lex burned her. This will help her and allow her to be independent, though she doesn't yet realize it. Up until now, she has been blind regarding the world around her and relied too heavily on others to get her out of crap before paying for her mistakes (Lex saving her from jail in Commencement, Clark saving her from Adam, Clark saving her from Zod, etc).

Which is something he knows, and just another reason why Martha's rejection to him at this point will not affect him as Lana's rejection of Lex will do to Lex.

I agree that Lionel was being coyly terse with Lana, but I thought what he said was a bombshell. He's essentially agreeing to let Lana in a little deeper, letting her know and I think it is especially evident by their last exchange when she demands to know it all and he doesn't refuse. ( though we don't know for fact what was said )
A very interesting episode.

Well what I want to know is what Lionel told her in response to her Martha threat. Obviously he must have told her something, we just didn't get to see it. So does she know Clark's an alien? Had she already figured that out? Did Lionel mention it?

Lana has all the pieces of the puzzle, so I wouldn't be surprised if she had already figured out that he's an alien. Is she going to now stay with Lex to spy on him to help bring down whatever terrible thing he is doing?

I really liked this episode!

I doubt she found that out yet. That will surely not take place offscreen.

I think all Lionel did was feed her a bunch of lies. If Lionel was out for Clark and Clark's best interests, he would have told him what he's up to & work as a team like at the end of season 5 than hide everything. He probably told her what she wanted to hear.

He holds a powerful hand in whatever he's doing, and he won't divulge info to anyone, especially not Lana.

Martha reveals in the barn that she still doesn't trust Lionel.

But that does not stop martha from running after him, even after clark told her once lionel was in the barn when jonathan had the heart attack.
MB has some serious Austin Powers Mojo.

Nobody will get the upperhand on Lionel . Lana is way out of her league. Even though she showed real promise in this episode. The Luthors will always land on their feet!
