Well, we know that Chloe's mom didn't become a freak when she was young since that was way before the meteor shower. That means that she had to have been exposed to kryptonite afterwards (like Gabriel's dad in Hidden). But, she went nuts before Gabe & Chloe ever lived in Smallville since Clark met Chloe in 8th grade and she was much younger when her mom left.
So that makes me think that Chloe's mom's powers are a result of Lex's drug. It's still uncertain if she can control anyone by touching their possessions or if it's only freaks.

Well Moira controlled Chloe when she was a little girl so it can't really be from Lex since he would be a boy or a teenager. It is also possible that Kryptonite can be found in other places than Smallville.

We all know to expect plotholes with Chloe's mom and her origins, it's nothing new. This episode being heavy into her family history and not just a throw-away reference should be taken as the official word unless they contradict it.

Moira could have been in Smallville during the meteor shower, or something happened when she stopped in Smallville right after it. There are plenty of explanations.

And obviously Chloe didn't get her powers from being around kryptonite during the duration of the show, since she had them 12 years ago...

More plotholes:
Chloe's family is supposed to have a mental disease that the women get. If she found this out according to Scare, then there must have been more than just her mother who had it (1 person doesn't make a trend).
Chloe's mom was also catatonic. If she were simply a freak-controlling freak, then she wouldn't be catatonic. She would be able to use her powers. Her reverting to a catatonic state is a plothole.
And when I said Lex's drug caused the power, it was a new drug and she had recently woke up. But now we know that they just built plothole after plothole. And I'm not one to ignore past episodes, so past episodes are no less official than this episode.

That makes so much sense, she had them before she even moved to Smallville. BTW, I'm not criticizing you, just the facts that the writers laid out that basically say that Chloe has been a freak for the last 12 years and still shows no powers, and became a freak before her or her mother ever moved to Smallville.
I don't understand how they can't do anything right when it's about Chloe's mom & family history. And where the hell was Gabe to see his wife?

I think you misunderstood the plot. Moira was in a catatonic state due to either her power or her illness, probably both. But even if Moira didn't have the illness that doesn't mean they don't still have a trend of mental disorders in other woman. It would just be coincidental, not a plothole.
Lex's drug didn't cause the power, it caused her to come out of her catatonic state. She went back into that state because a) she no longer had the drug and b) she no longer wanted to endanger anyone.
The plotholes are: when exactly did Chloe and family move to Smallville and were they there for the meteor shower. You're developing other plotholes that aren't there by trying to fill in these two plotholes with your theories.

The scene said 12 years ago, though they did not show them as soon as they got the powers, it showed her leaving. She could have had the powers for many years, mean she would not know until she was holding something of Chloes at the same time as she was telling her to do something.

So what if there is a family history of a mental disease? That means Moira was one of them, and maybe Moira's mother, and maybe Moira's god mother. Who knows? I don't see how that's a plothole.
I don't understand how her going into a catatonic state is a plothole. Obviously, she has a mental disease as well as being a freak, but used her mental disease as an excuse to go the hospital.
Lex developed a new drug to wake her out of her catatonic state to manipulate her powers.

The history of mental disease could have come after she left, triggered by the stress of leaving.

Who said they were in Smallville at the time? Maybe Moira was exposed to meteor rocks before they moved by passing by the town. It's happened before.

I wanted to hear the explanation of what Moira and Chloe were doing when they were infected in the meteor shower.
And, why Moira's hair color changed.
But, maybe they'll bring her back and explain more later?

Umm, Moira's hair was the same color in the flashback as it was in the present, wasn't it? Her hair color didn't change, it's always been that way.

The theory about Lex's drug causing her power was developed & posted before they revealed that she could control Chloe when Chloe was 8.
Based on what she said "I left because I did that to you" (referring to making Chloe scrub her hands) made me think that she was not at all catatonic and very much in control, yet feared what she could do. I don't understand why she went into that state. Perhaps they gave her something like a lobotomy and Lex's drug fixed it temporarily.
What I'm saying is that this episode just raised more questions and left things unexplained. And I'm pretty sure (and hope) this is the last we get about Chloe's family history.

They really destroyed the continuity in this episode with all things related to Chloe's background. They didn't even explain why Chloe was infected or when she was infected. And that hair color thing was atrocious, we just saw her last year with blonde hair and now she has brown. I know that it's Carter's natural hair color and she probably didn't want to change it for the episode but geeze, put a wig on her at least.

Her mom alone doesn't make a history of disease. But I'm guessing you meant to say her mental illness came after she left, which I may be able to understand.

You misunderstand me completely. I am pointing out a plothole--they said she got her powers by being exposed to meteor rock while researching for the Torch, etc. At least they implied it. But now we know she's had the powers at least since she was 8, since her mom could control her.
EDIT: I think some people are missing that Linda Carter wasn't supposed to be mentally unstable or retarded in this episode. She had been faking it to keep Chloe safe. I'm actually kind of disappointed--the most interesting part of this storyline was Chloe's mom having mental illness. Yet on this episode she seemed perfectly sound, until she went into a coma.
Was she supposed to be in a coma on Tomb? I'm trying to figure that out--she didn't speak, but she moved, albeit mechanically. But if not catatonic, why wouldn't she talk to Chloe and explain that she wasn't really mentally ill?

I know...I took it to mean that they wanted her to look like she did when she was wonderwoman so people would recognize her, but the bottom line is that it's a plothole that her hair was brown and not blonde when it was blonde back in Tomb.

She didn't speak in Tomb because it's either a plothole or she developed the disease after she left. And if the latter is true, then they shouldn't have made it seem like the only reason she was away was that she was afraid of what she would do to Chloe.
I think it could be implied that she went catatonic afterwards and that the disease in her family is still real (it would have to be since a history of mental disease doesn't include 1 person).

What went on was that they just retconned Chloe's backstory, along with lots of things concerning her mother.
Chloe and Moira were driving through Smallville either on the way to or from her grandmother's house in Granville during the first meteor shower in 1989. That's how they both got infected. According to the original spoilers from SAM, there was supposed to be another flashback to them driving through it, but it seems they cut it out. Likely for budget or time. But they should have explained it. Maybe it'll happen if Moira comes back next season.
They changed the 'hereditary insanity' thing too. Moira institutionalized herself because she was hurting Chloe. Controlling her and she couldn't stop it.
Basically, what happened in Tomb, has been changed. Chloe still went to see her mother, but she was catatonic at that point.

Well if they changed all these things, then there's nothing stopping them from doing the same next year if they bring her back (which I hope they don't).
And as I recall, Chloe used to live in Metropolis, not Granville. This is the problem when they retcon the story every time they mention it.

I guess this isn't really a plothole because Moria didn't really know this, but if she had been lucky enough to have gotten something that belongs to Lex, technically she would have been able to control him, being that Lex is meteor infected as well. Too bad she is catatonic again, could have really used that power to bring Luthor down.

Lana was 3 years old.
Here is a history of what was revealed about Chloe's mom:
Lineage:
Chloe: I know where she is Clark. The difference is, she's not interested in me.
Chloe: She left when I was five, so I came downstairs and, there was my dad, trying to make waffles. He never even really explained why she left. It was weird.
Scare:
This is from Chloe's worst fear:
Chloe's Mom: I’ve been waiting for you, Chloe.
Chloe: Mom?
Chloe's Mom: You can’t escape this, Chloe. None of the women in our family ever have.
Other lines from this episode:
Chloe: I found my mom, Clark.
Chloe: Yeah, I mean I put my feelers out for years and something; three months ago finally came through, so...um, it turns out she’s, um...not exactly MIA, so to speak. She’s in a mental institution.
Chloe: The real kicker is it’s hereditary.
Tomb:
Clark: You know Chloe, the doctor asked if you had any history of mental illness in your family. Should we tell him about your mom?
Chloe: No.
Clark: Chloe, she...
Chloe: Clark, I don't know what's happening to me, but I don't want anyone thinking I'm like my mom. So just don't say anything, all right?
Chloe: Or maybe there really is something wrong with me, like my mother.
Clark: What is wrong with your mother, exactly?
Chloe: I don't know. I mean, she left when I was 12, so that was before... I don't know.
Clark: But you do know where she is.
Chloe: Yeah.
Obscura:
Clark: You know, I remember the first time I met her. It was 8th grade. She'd just transferred from Metropolis & I was assigned to show her around. The 1st thing she wanted to know was where she could buy a copy of the Planet so she could keep in touch with civilization. When she found out I lived on a farm, she insisted I invite her over to experience it first hand. I think she thought I was Amish. When I brought her up here, she just kissed me, right out of the blue.
--------------------------------------------------
So you could see the contradiction with the age. In Lineage she said her mom left when she was 5. In Tomb she said 12. Based on what she said about Tomb, she left about 2 years before she moved to Smallville & met Clark (a year before starting Smallville High according to Obscura).
What I want to know is something she said in a line of hers:
"I mean, she left when I was 12, so that was before..."
My question is, before what? She was about to say something. But does it really matter that there is so much contradicting info?

I hate it how they're coming up with these far-fetched plotlines (even for Smallville) and are basically just pulling the storylines out of their a**es. It seems like they haven't thought about it at all, they're just filming the first thing that comes to mind. They're changing everything around on Smallville that's already happened and I hate it. Okay, Chloe's mom did NOT leave her b/c she's a meteor freak or whatever--she left her b/c she's a coward. That was established in Season 2 ("Lineage"), and I can't stand how NOW they want to give another explanation for it. Why don't they just rewrite the first five seasons if that's what they want to do?! And I absolutely HATE the Chloe is a meteor freak storyline--just complete BS.
BAD EPISODE--stop with the ridiculous plot lines and stupid action scenes and get back to the heart of Smallville--the characters! /:(

Yes. This is why so many of us have issues with her being a freak with actual powers from the shower. Because it was 18 years ago and she hasn't shown any signs of abilities in those years. None of the prior freaks on the show have ever had 'latent' abilities, so it all basically sucks. But this is what they chose to do.
As for her ability, apparently we'll find out in the finale.

Well, I'm not sure. Remember Chloe's tombstone in Gone said she was born in 1987 (Lana was born in late 1986, like October or November given the events & setting of Craving). So Chloe was 2 when the meteor shower happened. I'm guessing her birthday is early 1987, like January-March. That would make her 8 in 1995 and 20 today (which is correct). But that means that we have another age at which Chloe's mom left her (5 according to Lineage, 12 according to Tomb, and now 8 according to Progeny).
And going back to the opening flashback scene from 1995, why would Chloe bring her school newspaper to show her mom if she was at her grandmother's house and it was her grandmother who lived in Granville? I never heard anything about this, so I think it was implied by Progeny that her family lived in Granville, which is not correct according to Clark's statement in Obscura.
EDIT:
I just read again that you said it was in spoilers. I wouldn't regard anything that is deleted or appears in spoilers but doesn't happen in the episode as official. So based on the scene with her coming home from school and showing her mom the article, I would have to stick to what I said that they lived in Granville according to this episode.

All that Lineage/Tomb stuff? Has been retconned according to this episode until we get further notice.
Her family DID NOT live in Granville. As in Gabe, Moira, and Chloe. Her grandparents did. Chloe and her mother were either coming back from or going to her grandparents house during the original meteor shower in 1989 which is how they got infected. You have to drive through Smallville to get to Metropolis from Granville. The scene to explain it all likely was cut due to time and/or budget. Or as I said before, maybe they'll explain it if Moira comes back next season.

It never said in this episode that her family lived in Granville. The paper that 8 year old Chloe was holding said "Metropolis Elementary Gazette"... so how could they live in Granville if she goes to a Metropolis elementary school?

It was played very weird. Didn't it seem to you as if she brought that paper (even though it was the Metropolis Elementary Gazette) to her mom as if she returned from a day of school? There was no grandmother around. The scene was done wrong. If they wanted to make us believe it was the grandparents' house, then why not show them or why show Chloe bringing her mom an article that she would have shown her back in their own place in Metropolis? It didn't make sense. Her mom I think even said that she told her to wash her hands, but Chloe instead went to play on her computer. Why would her computer be at her grandparents' house? IIRC, the day in the flashback was the same day she made Chloe scrub her hands. And if it wasn't, why did she take her to the grandparents' house before calling the doctors to take her away?

This is the last time I'm explaining it.
1989, Chloe was 2. Moira and Chloe were driving through Smallville either on the way to or from Granville visiting Chloe's grandparents when the first meteor shower hit. That is how they both got infected. This scene wasn't included in the episode, but was supposed to according to the spoilers. It was likely cut for time or budget. Or maybe they'll explain it further if Moira returns next season.
1995, Chloe was 8. This is the scene we see in Progeny. Chloe comes home from school with a paper in her hand of an article she wrote in her school's newspaper (Metropolis Elementary Gazette). Moira tells Chloe she has to leave. She admits herself to an institution.
There were no grandparents there. That was in the first meteor shower in 1989. It wasn't at her grandparents house in Granville, it was at Chloe's house in Metropolis.
The story about Moira making Chloe wash her hands was before Moira left. It was one of the factors that made her leave in the first place, because Moira controlled Chloe to wash her hands until they were clean.

I thought they lived in an apartment in Metropolis. It just didn't seem like a house in an urban environment.
I still say that until this scene of the meteor shower is shown, it remains a plothole. And I would think it would be major retconning since Chloe would probably have some memory of the event and would have mentioned it to Clark by now. Something much less crazy than a meteor shower shown in the Pilot happened to me when I was not even 2 and I still remember it.

I'm sorry but hair color is our biggest worry for a plothole? She dyed her hair or some kind nurse did it for her. Big whoop there.
re: Chloe's infection - there was no need to explain it, we know she was infected by the original meteor shower since she was infected so long ago. The how would be cool but it's not a plothole to leave it out.
re: Moira's mental illness. She faked it to protect Chloe but she didn't fake being catatonic. Her catatonic state could easily have been brought on by the mental illness that truly runs in their family. Lex brought her out of that state with the drug but it wears off. Her powers and her catatonic state were not shown to be related.
The plotholes are the ones that we've had for a while with Chloe, in that she originally said her Mom left at a different time of her life and that they moved to Smallville at a different time. These things can currently be seen as either plotholes or open to interpretation, but all these other "supposed" plotholes I just don't see.

Moira was born in Granville, it was stated on the computer info Chloe and Clark read in this ep. It was very likely that she met Gabe and moved to Metropolis and the family made trips to Granville regularly to visit Moira's parents. And Chloe and Moira could have easily visited Smallville at the same time and became infected when Chloe was real young.
For me the only discrepancy is when the mom left.
Also, Chloe was very young and may not have remembered everything like her conversation with her mom, she just woke up one day and her mom was gone, like she stated in Season 2.
And I agree about the hair color, big whoop, people change it all of the time.

I assume all of the meteor-freaks ever shown to have powers who didn't have their meteor-shower experience shown or talked about were also plotholes by this reasoning, right?

I doubt they let the supposedly crazy people in the institution dye their hair as they please.

Okay, first off, Smallville, not real life. Second off, they're already crazy, why not let them (with assistance) dye their hair? We're talking a teeny-weeny-tiny little detail getting blown into plothole proportion and that's just silly.
And for good measure,

Well I hate to break it to everyone with all of these ideas about Chloe/Moira's past but ALMiles never put as much thought into this episode like everyone here. They probably never even seen Tomb. Besides its just a show so no one really has to get worked up about it. By the way to throw some fuel on the fire, maybe Moira dyed her blonde while in the crazy house since she had black hair in the flashbacks :p

It's different. This is a major character we're talking about, not some 1-time appearing freak. Until I was told about that spoiler (which I do not read), I was very confused. Shows should never depend on spoilers of scenes that never happened to explain events. Someone who watches this show and doesn't go to fansites like this would also be very confused.
I expected that for a character that has been developed as much as Chloe has that they would at least take a couple minutes and show the scene. We have seen footage of every other character and where they were during the meteor shower except for Chloe. It's obvious a major retconning being done. If she was a freak, then her power should have been apparent by now. No other freak has gone 12 years from 1 meteor shower plus be exposed to more kryptonite as time went on, plus be exposed to another meteor shower without still showing powers. Don't you think that's strange when they're trying to sell the idea that she's a freak?
I know from right now that this will be an episode that will be difficult to re-watch on tape or later when I buy the DVD set for this & many other reasons. After such a long break, I expected much better.

I agree, good episode but showed no real continuation and concluding factor like omg it all makes sense no.. like in memoria

Memoria did make sense. The continuity with Lex's brother and the twist that Lillian killed Julian were incredibly great. This episode ignored so many established facts as other episodes that have dealt with Chloe's (and her family's) past.
Even with all the plotholes aside, the plot was just bad. Chloe's mom being able to control freaks? A wasted episode...one that could have better been spent getting into Lionel's plan.
