No question how Clark afforded it--Tundra paid Clark big bucks to push it! Everyone in Smallville will want the truck officially endorsed by Clark Kent!

LOL - Made me what a big red truck (with Tom inside) lol......

But at least Clark didn't get out of the truck and say something like 'I'm glad I'm driving my Tundra so that we could get through the mud like that'

or Chloe saying 'Clark, your Tundra is so awesome but I love my Yaris'

At least it was just visual. I for one - love the new truck.

I was also wondering. That comic they threw in there, wasn't that supposed to be an ad slot? And at the end they had the little Yaris bit. It would be cool if they did that kinda thing more often. And if that's the case, I'm gonna go buy a Tacoma (actually I already was anyway).

I'm such a sell-out. lol.... But a Tundra is a tough truck and Clark had a nice suped version of the truck - not your basic model - so I'm sure that truck can handle anything that Clark throws at it....lol

Tundra's are freaking expensive, and wasn't that a full blown SR5 4WD? Probably top of the line. The farm was going broke...probably because of the debt they incur with tractors and trucks flying all over the place :D

And Chloe must be doing OK, too. Where's the cute orange New Beetle? What was she driving now?

SV is certainly turning into a huge product placement gallery!

The Tundra is fine to me, though the new Chevy truck looks a lot better. I don't understand why Clark needs to drive around in a truck that gets like 10 MPG, when he can be anywhere in the world in under 5 minutes for hardly any energy?

BWOracle
04-19-2007, 11:07 PM
Obvious product placement. Toyota has spent billions on the new truck plant in San Antonio so they're really pushing the Tundra (their display at the LA Auto Show was huge).

The most glaring examples of product placement on Smallville have to be the Ford Fusion scene in Solitude and the Accuview in Vengeance where Chloe actually said "Accuview to the rescue".

They also had an Old Spice ad in Jinx.

As long as it pays the bills and keeps the show going...I don't really mind.

The Tundra starts at $22K. I know people that make half what senators make and they are buying cars in that price range. This seems resonable to me. I just dont think they can afford to insure it or any vehicle with all the accidents they have had with thier trucks. (But I guess that could said for so many people in Smallville).

I think Clark's new boy friend Oliver bought it for him. CLark asks Oliver for favors every 5 minutes now. Its all about the Cliver. I love how Clark was like "I will give you a ride to the Planet" instead of superspeeding. Doesn't Clark know about the world's oil crisis? Hasn't Jor-El been trying to get Clark to save us from our problems but instead he is part of the problem :p

Yeah, that's what I figured.
[The Smallville producers need everybody on the show to drive new cars to get $$ from VW, Toyota, what have you; they always have used Dodge cars & trucks, though -- interesting ...]
It actually makes sense, though, because the Kents always drove old Dodge trucks & fixed their tractor while the farm was their primary income, but now Martha being the Senator makes up for their losses. Chloe either gets her new cars with her computer-hacking-skills or she's up to her ears in debt, either of which would fit. Lana always has a new SUV, too; could be she's way in debt, or maybe she got inheritance from her mom & dad, or maybe she sued NASA for letting her parents get hit by meteorites ...

Who cares, really? Other than Lost, just about every popular TV show has product placement - it's a major source of revenue for networks. The fact that it occurs on SV attests to ithe show's popularity and pumps dollars into the show's budget.

If it pumps money in, I wouldn't care if they did have lines vaguely endorsing the product.

Martha could afford it on a senator's salary. Besides, how many dealers would give a senator the car at cost because they are a senator? Damn near everyone of them.

I like the new truck - what does it matter that Clark's driving one with poor gas mileage - it's tv.....I'm pretty sure he didn't look into consumer reports before jumping into it and driving it down the road. ;)

hmmmm......well let's see - a lot of the parts are made in other countries and then some of the vehicles are assembled in the US - so it's at least part US....give the truck a break :p

Of course - Chevy's and Ford's are very nice too - any truck would be fine by me.

Yeah I noticed that Clark had a brand new Toyota thundra. I guess Toyota felt Clark would get the only one who would drive a pickup since Lois, Chloe, and Lana always driver SUVs or little cars like VWs. Lex would only drive a pickup when Porsche starts building a pickup.

Kansas state senators must make good money for the kents to afford a brand new pickup like that.

I guess Martha could afford it, but the truck begs this question--why would they buy it? Not only they don't need it, but people who were raised poor don't just go spending money on things they don't need, just because they have it. JK wouldn't have approved.

I like how, even when Lana was loafing in the Talon and not working at all, (or when she lived with Chloe) she could afford a brand new Jeep Liberty every episode. I'm guessing it's a new one at least--if not, I'm buying one--that thing got blown up every episode and still shone!

Now since there doing that Justice and Doom thing online like, sponsered by Toyota. So, did anyone notice Clark got a new car? And, the special-effects...they don't look the same as they used to be. This was funny.

About time he got a new vehicle, Martha has been at the job long enough for this to happen. And remember, he still has to use his truck to pick up large items, like when his truck bed was full in Splinter and he crashed and stuff went everywhere.

At least it wasn't nearly as repetitive as the Old Spice one. They didn't stop with just showing a zoomed in shot of it in Clark's locker, they also had the announcer saying something about it and I think there was a huge banner in the stadium for it too. As annoyingly obvious as the Acuvue and the fleet of cars have been, the blatant repetition during those two minutes was almost too much. If they're going to repeat ads, I think they need to find a way to span it out at least over the entire course of an episode instead of cramming them all into an extremely short period.

I agree though that as long as it means more money for the show, I'm all for the occasional product pushing. I don't think SV's budget is getting any bigger.

Yeah, if you work for the state, you make a lot of money. Pay for state legislators is always more because they have to afford two homes. One in their district and one in the capitol city. They have to have one to remain a representative of their district and one to do the work for the legistature.

But I think that Martha just takes the Luthorcorp jet to Topeka every day, so that's more money for them. And Clark is going to sell the land on the farm, so they've got the cash.
