Lex's reaction to the miscarriage last night (and I'm thinking he caused it) reminded me of Bruce Campbell on the X-Files. He played a demon who was impregnating women, hoping to have a human child. Every time he found out they were carrying a demon baby, he'd cause them to miscarry.
But while he was burning the bodies, he was sobbing for what would never be.
Lex was up to something bad, but I believe he loves Lana in his own little way, and maybe even loved the baby, or the idea of it.
It's a tribute to Michael's acting that he can make someone we've seen do heinous things so sympathetic.
