I thought is was pretty cool to see Clark speed off in the wine cellar without all the special effects. Lana seen that he's there one second, and gone the next. Faster then a speeding bullet I don't think so, light speed maybe.

At first I thought that was an error in the effect, until I realized we're seeing from Lana's eyes.

Umm can someone say Lord of the Rings?!

I noticed that too. It was a great idea to show him speeding off like that through Lana's point of view.

I liked it too :D

I actually laughed out loud 'cause my Mom was like, "Cheap special effects!"

And I was like, "Mom, they're showing it through Lana's eyes."

And then she stopped laughing and went, "I knew that."
Silly Mom. Haha.

I wasn't paying complete attention due to the attractive woman in my house, but I thought it was an error at first too. Took me a minute to "get it" and I felt pretty lame for missing that fact.

So who's eyes are we supposed to see it through all the other times? It seemed as if he vanished.

most of the time, we're suppose to be seeing it through "t.v." eyes...supposedly at the speeds that clark can do the human eye cannot process them fast enough...this is why everyone claims he "disappears" before their eyes..which is logically pretty much right...every other time they just show the "after image" speed effect to show that Clark is actually runnin- otherwise some ppl will think he has the ability to vanish - just as you thought. < there are some ppl who can't catch on to those kinda things :p

I knew what they were trying to show with the scene... but I think it was cheap looking. It didn't look quite right.

I thought it was awesome. Especially that there was no sound for anyone to hear.

i'm sorry it still looked like they messed up. they don't do that when Chloe is looking at him. and in the past 6 years they have had plenty of people looking at him when he does it and they didn't show it this way. Also if you will remember even the cameras at luthercorp or at the musuem at least caught a blur. The camera even caught a blur when flash broke in to the plant in mexico. And we all know he is faster.

Last night had a cheesy look to it and it looked like the messed up.

It would have been cool if he super sped out of his clothes, just leaving them there in a heap !

I thought that was cute, I'm just happy Lana didn't suffer from sudden memory loss after seeing Clark superspeed away.

That's the way it should always be. I always got annoyed when they showed the superspeed "blur" effect. Superman can move so fast that you shouldn't even see a blur. He should appear to us slow polks to just vanish. Just like through Lana's eyes.

Current Superman in the comics can reach 99% the speed of light. He's between the age of 29 and 35 though, which means he's had a few more years of absorbing solar energy. (The more he absorbs the more powerful he becomes.)

I believe Clark is 19 in Smallville? So he's not quite up to the 99% speed of light just yet.

I believe the editors goofed up on this one. I've already killed the show on my TiVo (too painful for me to keep at this point), but I could swear there was a 'swoosh' sound when he was first shown leaving Chloe. From Lana's view there was no sound, but I can't believe that she wouldn't have heard something. Think about it...he's moving faster than the eye can see, faster than a bullet, correct? I'm not a physicist or scientist, but I'd think that, when something occupying a physical space the size of a human being is suddenly taken out of that space, there would be a sound of air filling that now empty space. Anyone nearby would hear it, perhaps not as loudly if you were further away from it, but still...

It seemed strange to me, in any case.

So that's what it looks like through Lana's eyes? I really REALLY thought they were just being cheap.

But it makes me wonder, if this is what superspeed looks like through her eyes (which makes more and more sense every second I think about it) why bother do the effect at all?

You know, aside from the fact that I didn't like it at all.

^ to answer your question... the reason for showing the regular dash effects is for the same reason you didn't like it. No one would prefer to see Clark dissapear in a flash off sequence over seeing and hearing him zoom in and out to different places. Its visibly more tolerable and less confusing (like j-kent stated in a post):
otherwise some ppl will think he has the ability to vanish

Haha, at first I thought they were being cheap by not doing that effect, but then I realized it was from Lana's perspective.

Yeah in real life we would not see a blur at all from that close up, we would just see Clark there one second, and to us he would appear to disappear.

Of course going that fast like that would cause the building to shake badly and the air to be sucked out of the room, but it is a TV show.

blow lana's cloths right off would be a pretty exciting scene. But chloe can keep her cloths on. No one wants to see that.

Yea, I didn't get that until reading this thread. :) That sure clears it up a little (what about the sound, though?)

Kinda felt like 'Fight Club' when you would see Tyler for a split second.

LOL ....hey now 'this ain't no damn cartoon ya know' -

I liked that they showed it from someone else's point of view - and I guess that is what it would look like - here one second and gone the next -a tad LOTR but more like you blink and he's gone - makes more sense that Lana being able to see the red trail Clark normally leaves for the viewers benefit.

That was totally wicked-awesome! :D
For ages, I was screaming, "That's it! That's how everyone else would see it!"

There was still a faint swoosh sound, you hear it a split second after Clark vanishes.

I thought it was awesome. The only thing that ruined the end of that scene from me was that the dialogue was changed from the time that scene was played at the beginning of the episode and when it was played through Lana's eyes. I don't know if it was more than just one sentence, but Clark said "then you don't know me like I thought you did" or something close to that in the first time the scene was played and later with Lana he said "then you don't know me very well". A small detail, but I think the changes in showing the superspeed was a great idea. Finally, after six years, we can see what it really looks like!!! :)

Yea, what was up with the change in dialogue? That really confused me, and I wasn't sure if this scene was still a dream or what.

Can anyone explain this?

I didn't catch the first scene's "whoosh/after-image" effect because I was doing some homework but when I saw it again 'through Lana's eyes' I just assumed that he was so distraught over Chloe's insistance that he simply RAN instead of a light jog (Super-job mind you).

Kind of like "The subject is closed" effect. Chloe kept on harping to stop the wedding and he's so conflicted he just runs like hell.

I liked that we got to see what everyone is really witnessing when Clark superspeeds away right in front of their eyes. Lana's point of view was different then what we, the TV viewing audieunce, is used too but for a change I didn't mind it.

you're just nitpickin now. they've never set things up like this in the past really. In this episode, they we're really emphasizing that it was from Lana's perspective only.

also for the camera...the blur is only seen in playback format using technology where frames can be divided catching anywhere from a split second or mere tenths of a second or so...human eyes aren't able to do that sir sorry

super speed seen from someone else's view looks lame, but it's very interesting point of view. I get used to see normal superspeed and I was pretty shocked. Positive.
