LOL, the purpose of the experiment was to have Tobias identify Meteor Freaks, kidnapping them, basically taking a DNA sample for study...

Tagging them, erasing their short term memory (either through some artifical means or through a meteor freak), and releasing them back into the public.

Releasing them could have been to observe them, discover if they have a useful power that warranted further study, discover if any lanent meteor freak would later developed an ability which would warrant further study, etc etc.

I think the DNA the extracted is suspose to help identify what their powers are and maybe how/why the meteors infected them. The GPS was meant as an easy means to keep an eye on them. They put them back probably because it's easier to "observe them in their natural environment" as Clark put it, then would be to hold them hostage and force them to reveal their powers - if they in fact even knew they had powers and knew how to use them. Plus, if 20 peeps go MISSING the authorites would get called in, so it's really better to just erase their memories and put them back.

I got the impression they were only killed because it was a way to erase the evidence after Clarkie stole the doctors laptop.

It was all Clark's fault, for stealing the top secret info. on the project. :\
They had to cut it short, & destroy evidence.
(Evidence meaning "the freaks" themselves.) ;)

Yup. And then he wanted to kill them all. Notice how all the freaks he killed were good guys who wouldn't go along with his plans. He even tried killing Tobias (also good) but failed due to Lana & Clark. To Lex, the only freak worth keeping are the ones who would do his evil bidding.

The one thing missing from this episode-Clark not confronting Lex and Lex not thinking Clark is involved interfering with his plan.

i aslo think Lex may be making a super freaky baby using all the >juices< from the freaks
