Lex: "I swear on my unborn child's soul"
Notice how he never said anything about its life. Assuming the child gets born, do you think this means the child will be evil, just like dear old dad?

Haha, how funny would it be if the baby gets taken away by the Devil?

I did not hear that.
I have to go back and watch.
Lexana scares me so I look away at times.
Soul is more powerful than life in a way I suppose - it's the essence of a person afterall ( if you believe in such things lol)
That child has no choice but to be evil - either that or be experimented on with fragments from meteorites.

he swore on it... being wrong... and knowing she knows. Either he's a bad liar or knows there isn't a baby so nothing to swear on.

maybe the baby has no soul.....

Lex choses his words carefully. I wouldn't be surprised if this was symbolic in some way.

Then again......Lex obviously used the baby as a way to make Lana marry him. And she's not showing yet....at all. Perhaps when he said it wasn't a normal pregnancy, what he did was make her think she's pregnant.....or have the baby conveniently miscarry sometime after they're married. If they meant to have the baby live, they would have had Lana start showing by now I'm sure.

He's a better liar than Clark or this child has no soul
Yeah, it was definitely symbolic.
Unless I'm mistaken, I'm sure he put emphasis on 'soul' ...
THE BABY HAS NO SOUL!
Or wait ...
THERE IS NO BABY!
Heh ... it sure doesn't look like it.
Some guy in my university said he doesn't want to watch 'Smallville' anymore because Lana's getting fat.
She's not even showing, you moron. Hehe.

Funny,I just read an interview with MR about his directing that said lex doesnt lie to Lana like Clark.Guess MR is a liar too,or he wanted to trow us off,for this ep?

According to my speculation, there is no baby! (I've thought that the whole time and I'm sticking to it).
So I think Lex is making a promise on nothing.

I don't know. I think Lex knows there's a baby, but there's something bad going on with it. We still cannot be sure if the spoilers are right or not...There might be a freak baby afterall.

I'm not sure the baby will be "evil" but the doc did say to Lex something about "you know it's not your normal pregnancy but she's fine" a couple of weeks ago. That right there is a red flag that something is up with this child.

Yes - it's symbolic of the fact that you shouldn't marry people who lie *right in your face* and I think Lana knows it.

The baby will never survive. The writers will very predictably have something tragic happen to Lana.
She will ultimately survive, to mope around & cry about it for the remaining seasons. :\

you guys are looking to deep into this. I think he just said that to really prove he was not lying. I still don't think Kristens character believed him. She saw the doctor there. I still can't figure out the looks she makes whenever Lex touches her. She always wants to vomit. I am not sure she has feelings for him. I still think that this could end up being a big plot twist. I would not put it past the writers. It just seems weird that the producers go out of their way to show the faces Lana makes. They want you to know something.

I agree with that.
I think she was basically thinking this bastard has the nerve to swear and lie on our unborn child!
being born Luthor means being born without a soul anyway:p

Maybe the kid has NO soul whatsoever. Maybe it's been so badly warped by 33.1, that it had no conscience. It's pure evil. Lex made it (the baby) to do what Lex could never achieve. The baby could be like an experimental test platform for 33.1 R&D.

hmm... sounds like the type of lie someone says while they're crossing their fingers behind their back.
i think the line lex said about swearing on the soul of his unborn child was just meant to be in the same factory of saying, (lana's baby doesn't have a soul because (a). baby is not human or (b). she's not really preggy, so if lex is swearing on an baby that doesn't exist then he can get away with not telling lana the truth.
because if the baby DID exist and was human, then even mr. evil luthor couldn't say that because it would be too low even for him.

that line was symbolic. I believe that because of his "oath" it reflects that the baby is doomed to die. But don't take me for 100% because I tend to keep most of my ideas linked to keeping true to the comics and that has never given me great success for guessing how Smallville will go with their stories.

No, he knows there is no child. So he has no problem to swear...

I noticed this too. He lies very convincingly to her face. He is manipulative. To me, that is deceitful and near to lying. He uses just enough truth in what he says to make his dishonesty seem honest. Now, that's a real good liar. And Lex is good at pretty much everything he does. Lex lies to promote Lex's interests. Clark lies, but his lies usually are not from selfish motivation. But, when you think about it, a lie is a lie regardless of the motivation.

He said 'like Clark' though? That could just mean that Lex is lying but in a different way than Clark lied. It's clear to everyone that Lex lied right to Lana's face and then sworn on their baby's soul. :p

It just shows that Lex is a sly, lying SOB. And technically, Lana can't hold him to his promise because Lex is swearing on nothing. Supposed to be, if recent spoilers are to be believed there is no baby. No baby, no soul to make promises on.

Rather that there isn't a child--wouldn't it more on there won't be.
That would explain the un-born part.
But as he said that notice Lana's face--I half expected her to jump up and scream "SECRETS AND LIEESSSSS!"
Very Significant! I remember when Alicia swore on her life that she would never reveal Clark's powers and we all know what happened to her.

it was more symbolic of lex's ability to BETRAY his loved ones (both lana and his 'unborn child')

Everyone who is claiming there is no baby in the first place or that the baby won't ever be born needs to go back and re-read the first post. The question proposed is meant to be answered "assuming the child gets born"... which means the responder is encouraged to assume the baby is real and will be born, regardless of any spoilers, rumors, or speculation one may have heard previously.

Thanks for sharing that spoiler with me. I really, really appreciate it. </sarcasm>
Personally, I believe that line is symbolic... not just in the sense that Lex is betraying his loved ones, but in the sense that the unborn child will be cursed (assuming it lives). However, since I'm assuming that Lana will have a miscarriage, and thanks to ShelbyKent's unmarked spoiler, I guess it's safe to say the baby won't live/exist at all. But since this topic is assuming the baby is born, none of that is relevant.

i think there will be no child born. if one is, it will be evil, but not because of that line. so i voted no. i wish there was an option for "no, and i don't think it was worded funny." i would have voted for that.

I think it was an omen but only an oblique one in the "there is something wrong here" not so much that Lex "knows the baby is going to be a bizzaro" - more a hint for us the audience than an intentional implication on Lex's part.
