It would be a shame if it doesn't pull off great ratings as it was the best one this season IMO. Too many great traits.

There hasnt been a Clana centric episode this season yet.
Nice ratings, Episode 15 always brings good numbers since season 4 (Sacred,Cyborg) and now Freak. :)
Im glad this arc is getting better, surely deserves it after the crap that we had to go through from the first 9 episodes.

The trailer was weak as heck, and just cuz the trailer involved a ten seconds Clana scene (that wasnt even that interesting IMHCO) it doesn't mean it was a Clana centric episode.
If anything, this just prooves people are liking what they're seeing this second arc.
Im thinking Promise will get lousy ratings if they promote Lexana again, so I wonder what they're gonna come up with in the trailer, since episode 16 has been one of the lowest rated episodes for years now.

Well, it is good to see people understanding that that high quality, well written, and strong episodes bring in the ratings and not one particular person/ship -- except for if that person is Clark Kent.
Now, have we learned anything boys and girls?

These ratings prove to me once again that good, well balanced episodes will do well, less well balanced, poorly written episodes will do worse. That besides scheduling are the biggest indicators of ratings, good or bad. It's less of who might be featured, people want action, mythos and good writing. Not too surprising :D and I wish Goughlar would take note.

Not to be disrespectful to Chloe as she certainly is a good character for the show...but don't you think there could possibly be other explanations?
This was an epsiode where Clark used all of his powers, a first if I'm not mistaken. There was also the Clark/Lana moments which it seems everyone agrees were some of the best ever with even some die hard Lana haters saying they actully disliked her less after the episode.
And for me, I always like the episodes where Lana (or someone) is on the trail of Clark's secret and is almost but not quite able to connect the dots. "Perry" comes to mind here.
Anyway, just my two cents.

The Valentines episode they pushed Clark and Lois in the trailer.
The last episode they pushed Lana hanging around in the barn and Lana getting closer to Clark's secret in the trailer.
In this episode they pushed Chloe being infected in the trailer.
This is why the last episode was called "Trespass" about Lana and this episode was called "Freak" because of Chloe.
Go Chloe!!
Bosrudorfer
02-16-2007, 03:39 PM
It's because it was action packed... I don't think Chloe brought all the viewers. I came because of Lana getting close to finding Clark's secret (Clana) and because I liked the past few episodes.
I think every character advanced their growth in episode and it was well round per each character.

Of course, there's always the theory that after the last episode more people were curious about Lana's "search" and so tuned in for that. After all, to have high ratings a show has to look at not just the trailers, but the shows that led into it.
It's kind of the same with shows with bad ratings. Was the individual episode itself or the ones leading up to it that caused them? Kind of hard for an individual episode to have bad ratings on it's on merit because how would people know it was bad unless they tuned in for awhile and watched it? And if they tuned in wouldn't that increase the ratings?
I'd be more apt to look at a string of episodes as influening ratings rather than a single episode by itself unless it was a repeat that people had watched fondly before and so tuned in again.
Polomontana
02-16-2007, 03:49 PM
Of course single episodes attract viewers like Jonathan's death, Zod or Justice. This is why you push things in the trailer and the title of the episode. If this episode was about Lana finding out more about Clark, they would have called it "Closer" after the show "Trespass." They called it "Freak" because Chloe is infected and that's the hook of the show.
Just like the hook for the Valentines show was Lois kissing Clark. I like Lana this season and Trespass was definately a Clana episode, but this was Chlark all the way. Like I said Lana is 100% better to me this season and I think she's tougher with Lex but Chloe is still the cream of the crop!!

It was never advertised that there would be a Chlark kiss in that episode ... I watch it religiously and I read the spoilers ...they blind sided us with that Kiss - they really kept mum about it but if they had ..maybe the ratings would have been higher
- Anyway I know that one of the reasons I am a huge fan of the show is because of Chloe - Don't get me wrong I am a huger superman fan but I know the story like the back of my hand - all the different itterations of it - but I like her character ... I have a bias for strong female characters and I think she is one of the strongest in there ...

Yeah. The episode wasn't all about Chloe. I would say that 33.1 was the reason, since this was the most 33.1 related episode till now. We got to see Lex's methods into looking at freaks and how to find out their differences.
Plus this episode was non stop action and very unpredictable. I listed a bunch of great qualities about this episode in the "Best episode of this season" thread, most of which had nothing to do with Chloe. All the characters were great and played their parts very well. I wasn't interested in this episode until I saw the director's cut and the freakvision and started wondering if it would be used on Clark.
AM did a great acting job in that scene with the GPS chip that Clark took out from her. But this episode was great for several reasons, not just her.

You can't compare the Vessel kiss to anything as a source of ratings because it was a complete surprise. They didn't advertise it. People here on the spoiler board barely heard about it one day before the episode aired so the millions of people who only saw the trailer for the episode had no idea it was coming.
This episode on the other hand was advertised in the US almost exclusively to be about Chloe so it is a great sign of her popularity that the episode did so well.

All I'm saying is that just as Clana fans are wrong about that ship causing the success of this show, Chloe fans are equally wrong to think Chloe made this episode be a ratings success. I would definitely attribute it to speculation & interest of the 33.1 storyline as well as a vast improvement witnessed in the last few episodes over the 1st half of the season. The story is really progressing now. And I think there may be a trend of increasing viewership from now till the end of the season.

02-17-2007, 12:48 AM
The trailers are fast-paced and intriguing enough to make the casual viewer tune in. Not to mention they advertised Chloe (a regular cast member) being a freak. That would be totally out of the blue for those viewers and would give them all the more reason to tune it, unlike us who already know the spoilers way beforehand. There's also the 33.1 angle to consider, as well as the buildup to Lana's knowing Clark's secret. This is also the first time MR directed.
So there are many things that could bring in such a high rating, not necessarily because of Chloe or shipper stuff alone.

It doesn't make any sense that the ratings went to 4.76 million. The ratings from 8-830 were 4.83 and 5.30 for 830-9pm. They should average out to somewhere between those two. But in the end, the individual ratings don't matter that much anyway. What keeps Smallville on the air for another season is consistency in the ratings, which it has had all season.

The reason for the ratings to drop is quite simple.
On Thursday, Smallville was pre-empted in a few markets.
For example, both Indianapolis (#25 market) and Lexington (#63) aired basketball games which are included in the overnights and the fast nationals for televisions viewing the CW, (station viewership not the individual shows).
Since a higher percentage of televisions have on the CW in those markets, the total viewer numbers and demos are skewed.
The final numbers take account the markets that didn't air the show and those markets are taken out of the equation to come up with the final total viewers and final demo numbers. Taking those markets out of the equation lowered the total viewers.

It's funny how when the numbers were high for this episode, people were saying Chloe brought the numbers in, better than Clana-centric episodes, etc. And as soon as the numbers turned out to be low everyone quiets down about Chloe-centric episodes bringing ratings in.
I think it's the opposite about Chloe centric episodes bringing in high ratings, but that's just me.
The numbers always say as much about present ep as about the previous one.

Trespass went up against the season premiere of Survivor which got 16.44 million viewers and a new Ugly Betty which got 14.28 million viewers.
Freak faced both shows this week.
Survivor - 16.08
Ugly Betty - 13.66
So those shows lost viewers from a week ago. Freak ratings remained consistent with the season average while suffering from preemptions in some of the bigger markets. Without those preemptions I would think that Freak would have received higher ratings.

Trespass netted 4.74 million. So that's just a slight increase of .02 million. I guess Survivor is still trumping us in the ratings
The 2nd highest rated eppie so far is Labyrinth (5.00 million) which is Clark-centric.
I guess we should have more Clark-centric eppies for good ratings :\

Gee Whiz, Lana's starting to finally get Clark in focus, it only took how many years? I think she should be blonde instead of Chloe. Chloe has displayed such marvelous growth that she deserves the credit she is getting. She is IMO the best and most popular actor on the set.

There might be several reasons why the episode was so good and got good ratings, but the commercial trailers were what led the viewers to watch the program and those trailers were about Chloe. No one knew in advance, among the general viewership, that the episode would be action packed, flow, or to be excellent.

I agree...not the whole of success of the show is because of Chloe....but the point is that in each and every spoiler...the producers show us that there is going to be some hook-up or something exciting about Chlark.....not a doubt that the episode turns out to be interesting and cool...but the thing that we watch it for...its never ever shown.....and more importantly......AMChloe is NOT given the credits she should be....I mean its been 6 seasons now...and she has served a lot more purpose than just a sidekick..then also, we see her after EDLois Lane in the credits..just because of the mythos.....this really is pissing...!!!!
Rest...BOY......I LOVE SMALLVILLE.....more importantly.............TOM WELLING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he is hotttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought the preview was horrible. What really got me excited was the director's cut and seeing freakvision. The preview looked like just another episode where Lex puts someone on a metal table (happened already twice before). As soon as I saw freakvision in the director's cut, I got excited because I started wondering if he would look at Clark and what he would see. I think they should have put that part in the preview and should have advertised Tobias as having that power. It would have gotten people a lot more excited about the episode.
It might have been Michael's directorial debut that drew so many viewers.
Anyway, I enjoyed this episode very much. Yeah Chloe!

Doubt it, how many people knew he directed the episode? Besides the people on the net....

Compared to the ratings of previous episodes this season this Chloe-centric ep didn't do that awesome. So I guess it is safe to say that people thinking that ratings are based on an individual(outside of Clark) or ship are totally off base.

The reason for the ratings to drop is quite simple.
On Thursday, Smallville was pre-empted in a few markets.

Thanks for the updated, correct, info. This is making a lot more sense.
So, basically, this episode got average ratings... not "soaring" ratings. So, essentially, it's always about the story. Whenever they have an 'event' episode, the ratings go up (like "Justice") and when it's just a typical FotW episode, the ratings stay normal.
