I know there is probably another thread like this but I wanted to start a new one. I love Fall Out Boy. I think their lyrics are really meaningful. However I think they went a little too far with their new CD. They've turned into like a boyband or something. It's strange. They do have a lot of other great CD's though. My favorite song is "Music or the misery"(Japanese bonus track) off the CD "From under the cork tree". I also love all the songs on their old CD "Take this to your grave" When they made that CD they must have had a good year becase that CD just makes me want to smile. The music is so happy and jumpy. (Bad way to explain it I know  )

What is your Favorite FOB song?

Okay first off, I'd like to say that Fall Out Boy is not a bad band... at least they used to be good. But I also just got their new CD. Here's what my latest Facebook Music Review Note had to say about it:

"Fall Out Boy and their new CD:

I will put this in terms that the band uses to describe everything in life... in other words, I'll try my best to use their slang to explain my feelings towards their new... album. There's a term in emo-speake, Sell Outs, which is used to describe bands that get overly caught up in their own popularity and become well... obsessed with themselves. It doesn't take a genius to see the problem with a band being fans of themselves... no matter what music they'll write, they will still think it's amazing, and in general the best music ever written.

Fall Out Boy are sell outs.

There are exactly two metaphors used throughout their entire CD: ships, sinking ships, planks of ships, ships ships ships, and speakers, radio speakers, bedroom speakers, speakers. "I can't stop feeling sorry for myself." You should feel sorry for yourself Pete, considering you even made me feel sorry for myself, cuz you made me listen to your music! In fact the only good thing about the lyrics on this CD was the constant usage of the word "we" in choruses - likely rip off of Jesse Lacey's writing style. I know I'm biased here, I listen to Brand New a lot and it's unfair of me to assume that FOB would listen to Brand New and learn stuff from them... but it's just something I have to believe in. I have to believe that at least one of the guys in FOB still listens to GOOD MUSIC and not just to themselves.

Lyrics aside, we get to the music. Anything new here? Nope. Power chords, palm muting, the usual, which wouldn't be bad... if the band didn't try to stick to the pseudo-hip hop riffs. I get it, you want to be more pop, but this isn't the way to go. In my opinion at least.

Applause at the end of the CD? Are you kidding me? Are you really that full of yourselves?

I suppose I could stand this CD if I wasn't a lyrics-listener. Too bad I am. "

The new CD is the worst music ever written. Only decent songs on it are tracks 4, 5, and 10, and even those don't quite cut it.

With that said, I loove their previous CDs. I Got A Dark Alley And A Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth is my favorite song probably, maybe Sending Postards From A Plane Crash Wish You Were Here though.

I see where they're coming from but I think we should remember FOB from their old music. And I don't think the new CD is that bad. :( I actualy enjoyed the lyrics. Especialy in Thriller and Fame<Infamy. I think they were just trying to change it up and do something diferent. Tey're big on that. Every new CD they've had has been really diferent from the last, going from Punk to pop to rock to R&B. They even said in their song Thriller. "Make us poster boys for your scene but we are not making an exceptance speach. I think that kind of shows that they don't care about being famous. They just want to do what they love the most. play.

I agree with you ketchup. The song called "I've Got A Dark Alley And A Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth" is one of my favorites. here are the lyrics:

Joke me something awful just like kisses on the necks of "just friends"
We're the kids who feel like dead ends
And I want to be known for my hits not just my misses.
I took a shot & didnt even come close

At trust and love and hope.
And the poets are just kids who didnt make it who never had it at all.

And the record wont stop skipping And the lies just wont stop slipping
And besides my reputation's on the line
We cant fake it for the airwaves force our smiles, baby, half dead
From comparing myself to everyone else around me.

Please put the doctor on the phone 'cause im not making any sense.
Blame everyone but me for this mess
And my back has been breaking from this heavy heart
We never seemed so far.
I'm hopelessly hopeful, that youre just hopeless enough
But we never had it all...

And the record wont stop skipping And the lies just wont stop slipping
And besides my reputation's on the line
We cant fake it for the airwaves force our smiles, baby, half dead
From comparing myself to everyone else around me

I don't own any of FOB's music, but I do like what I've heard on the radio. Unfortunately, when it comes to these guys I have to like the beat first, because I usually can't understand a word they're saying the first couple of times that I hear a song by them. Fortunately, I love "Sugar We're Going Down", "Dance, Dance", and "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race".

What I'm curious to know is, which tracks did Babyface produce on their new CD...I happen to be a fan of Babyface's old stuff, and because FOB and Babyface is such a random pairing, I'd love to hear those tracks.

idk I tried to figure that out too. It's like they're trying to keep a secret or something. It dosen't even say in the booklet that comes with the CD. It just says that they produced like two of them.

I'm going to FOB in concert in May. I went to youtube to see how they sounded live and I was pleasently surprised. Man Patrick can sing. And no one plays the guitar like Joe. I went to a website about Patrick and it says that he had never had any singing lessons, and he can play drums. Not to mention he plays the guitar. The only reason I love FOB so much is probably because of Patrick. He's so awsome at what he does. Not to mention he's funny and nice and not stuck up like Pete. You can learn a lot from hundreds of videos at youtube.

Glad someone else thinks Pete is stuck up...
Patrick is pretty good live, some people complain that he only sounds good on recordings... that's crap, he sings better than the singers of most bands I've been to. The FOB show I went to last year was probably one of the better shows I've ever been to. All American Rejects and Hawthorne Heights played there too. :)
As for Joe, he's alright, about as good as a pop-punk band guitarist should be, nothing incredible...

I used to be in absalute love with Pete then I was crushed when I saw a video on youtube where he walked up to these girls and said, "I bet you want autographs don't you?" I was so angry. Most of my friends still love pete just because of his looks. Looks don't matter to me though and I'd pick Patrick over pete any day. Patrick needs to go solo. I think he likes singing R&B beter too. Because when he warms up for his shows he sings usher and Neyo and stuff like that. I'm so excited for when I go see them. My parents are dreading it because they listen to stuff like hard rock and country. Basicaly everything but FOB.

I think this is my favorite song off their CD "From Under The Cork Tree" I just love the lyrics

FALL OUT BOY LYRICS

"Champagne For My Real Friends, Real Pain For My Sham Friends"

You are a getaway car, a rush of blood to the head
But me, I'm just the covers on top of your bed
You steer away in a rear view mirror, you make my head swim
I keep you warm and won't ask you where you've been

With your backless black dress soaked to the skin
When it's said and done they're all scrambling
And we're friends, we're friends
Just because we move units

Strike us like matches, cause everyone deserves the flames
We only do it for the scars and stories, not the fame
At least everyone is trying, everyone is shining
Everyone deserves the flames but it's such a shame
Such a shame

The sounds of this small town make my ears hurt (make my ears hurt)
Oh yeah, you caught me. But I caught you one worse
They say, "You want a war? You've got a war."
But who are you fighting for?
The tides out, the ship's run aground
We drown traitors in shallow water

With your backless black dress soaked to the skin
When it's said and done they're all scrambling
And we're friends, we're friends
Just because we move units

Strike us like matches, cause everyone deserves the flames
We only do it for the scars and stories, not the fame
At least everyone is trying, everyone is shining
Everyone deserves the flames but it's such a shame
Such a shame

Everyone is trying, everyone is shining
Everyone deserves the flames but it's such a shame

I don't particularly like FOB, but my friend Meredith is OBSESSED with them. Like horribly. She got mad at me and smallvilleobsessor17 when we said they weren't rock. Apparently she thinks they are. :p

AshRose62
03-11-2007, 03:02 PM
I don't think they're rock. Actually they don't even consider themselves rock Joe said that he always thought they were "Punk pop" lol. Whenever I watch interveiws I notice that people always ask questions like, "What do you think about people calling you an 'emo' band?" The band usualy reacts by laughing or saying something like, "A label is a label. We don't choose what we're called." lol. I love youtube. hehe

I absolutely love the way FOB puts the coolest things in their songs, like "In the mean time I'll just talk with my shoes, converse with my converse" or "The best part of believe is the lie" (Refering to how when you spell believe out lie is in the middle).

As emo as I am, I'm not that big of a fan of FOB, the thing is, mainstream. If you compare FOB to another band, I am sure FOB wins. But hey, everyone has a free opinion right?

*First post...:D *

Well, it looks like you guys all like their popular songs. I bought the Infinity on High album about a month ago, then I loved it so much, I had to buy the other two! Here are some songs I'd reccomend to anyone that doesn't have them yet. (My favorite is at the top, the rest are in no particular order.)

-The (After) Life of the Party. My favorite FOB song. If Patrick's voice doesn't give you chills, then there's clearly something wrong with you.

-Grand Theft Autumn (Where Is Your Boy). The song that made them famous! If you liked their newer singles (Dance Dance, Sugar We're Goin' Down), you'll love this one.

-Golden. Not as good as (After) Life, but still, Patrick's voice is amazing. If you don't like slow, piano songs, stay away from it.

-Bang the Doldrums. Sounds more like Dance, Dance and Sugar, We're Goin' Down than (After) Life of the Party does.

-Our Lawyer Made Us Change The Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued. I love it!

-XO. Once again, Patrick's voice...Not as good as the slower songs, but still great.

-The Carpal Tunnel of Love. Sort of dark, but so good...But I have to say, Pete's not a very good screamer...

-Saturday. Old-school Fall Out Boy is a little harder on the ears than their newer stuff, but I still love it.

These are just a few. Still, I'd reccomend checking out Take This To Your Grave and Infinity On High...Really, the only songs that are worth it on From Under the Cork Tree are the ones I listed and their famous ones (Sugar We're Goin' Down, A Little Less Sixteen Candles, and Dance, Dance.)

*Finishes fangirl rant.*

I think that IOH (Infinity on High) wasn't really they're best CD. Well it depends on wgat type of music you like. They started out as a rock band (When I fell in love with them) and now they're music has turned into R&B.

I blame this on MTV.

Ketchup

Yeaah, Infinity On High killed the band for me. Except Me + You and This Ain't A Scene (which are both OKAY at best...) the whole CD is awful.

Their first album was the best, Sending Postcards From A Plane Crash, Calm Before The Storm, and Saturday being the best songs.

As for the lyrics... much like Taking Back Sunday, FOB bases their lyrics on one-liners and verbal hooks. Although it's certainly difficult to come up with these "clever and witty" lines, overall most of their lyrics prove to be... well meaningless. I kinda got in the mindset that songs, to a degree, are poetry set to music, or music, set to poetry. Since FOB's one-liners do not by any means qualify as good poetry, I can't consider their lyrics even good. If u want good lyrics... Brand New, Silversun Pickups, Neutral Milk Hotel, some Radiohead, a bunch of acoustic/ballad bands... NOT Fall Out Boy.

And Ash, don't blame MTV, blame the record companies and the band. Record labels want to make more money, so they put pressure on artists to write more polished and generally accepted music. That's why in an absolute majority of cases, as bands put out new CDs, their sound gets more generic and unoriginal. Usually bands try to fight this to a certain degree, or as much as they can, but that is not the case with Fall Out Boy. I'm gonna go ahead and blame this on Pete the control Freak. FOB sold out, embraced their publisher's will for a beyond-pop punk/beyond-r&b washed out sound, and wrote this awful CD.
So I guess money's to blame... but then again, when is it not?

I don't know why you guys hate Pete and the new CD Infinity On High?

okay you have your opinions and I'm okay with it... but I want to clear some things up...

First off the new album.. Seriously it's jsut pure awsomeness

1-Thriller: pure genius! everything they say with just the first sentence '' We dedicate this song to anybody that people said, they couldn't make it.'' man this one gives us hope!

''Long Live The Car Crash Hearts, Cry On The Couch All The Poets Come To Life Fix Me In 45'' This is probably my favorite sentence! cause it's totally what I'm living... some people don't know what they mean... I can say that the ''Car crash hearts'' are poeple or things in life that was hurting Pete and drove him to suicide one day. ''cry on the couch all the poets come to life, fix me in 45'' this means that hes been seeing a psychatrice(dunno how to spell it sorry) and usually everytime you see one it takes 45 minutes and when you're in therapie theirs usually a couch and each time that person is fixing his life up. So for everything he's been through he's able to make songs out of it and have inspiration. well thats how I see it.

I mean this song gave me hope a lot I'll keep it forever in my heart!

2- The Take Over, The Breaks Over: go see the video! it's really cute !!BUT!! What they basicly say is that ''ya we've changed... everybody changes! so what is the problem that we changed a little?' I guess people don't like changes... I don't like changes myself but hey they are popular now so let them sing what they want, what they feel cuz if they were listening to us they wouldn't be themselves...

3- This Ain't A Scene It's An Arms Race! Love it!!! I love how Pete put a part of his life in it.. with the scene where the guy says to put out his pants... and the pictures goes on the internet... I felt bad for him when it happened...:(:(

4- I'm Like A Lawyer With The Way I'm Always Trying to get you off(Me & You) wow this one is sooo intense! Explaining how Pete wants to get in a relation ship and have a life.. get married and all... I like the part of '' The Best Way To Make It Through With Hearts And Wrists Intact Is To Realize That 2 Out Of 3 Ain't Bad, Ain't Bad.'' those lyrics give me chills when I hear them!

5-Hum Hallelujah: this one is so sad I don't have enough vocabulary in english to explain it fully but with the lyrics '' A Teenage Vow In Your Parking Lot, Till Tonight do us part'' says it all :) it's really good song that you really need to concentrate on the wave of the music and lyrics....

6-Golden: really the sadest song I have ever heard it makes me think of how people make mistake and huge ones... and people won't look at that person the same way they used to even tho that person has changed and is good now but they won't changed their mind of whatever happened.... it's weird how you make one mistake and that your life changes a lot... hmmm also patrick's voice is outstanding!

7-Thnks Fr Th Mmrs: This one is sooo cool and the video sooo cute haha! some awesome lyrics in there and the music is outstanding!!! love love love it! means so much to me in many ways!

8-Don't You Think I Know Who I Am?: wowww this one represents me soooo much on how much people hurts us.. on how much they bring us down... we despertly want to just don't care about those people but we just can't and we are feeling sorry for ourselves.... thats the way life is for a lot of people and he really showed us that well... this one is one of my favorites.

9- The (After) Life Of The Party: WOW listening to this.. I just wanted to cry... with the beat... the voice and the lyrics are just sooo so sooooooooo intense!!! '' A Star Away From Falling Appart'' and '' Cut It Loose, Watch You Work The Room'' those are my favortie part of it! but all the song is amazing to me!!!

10- The Carpal Tunnel Of Love: love that one too soooo cool!!!! okay I'm not sure to understand the lyrics I've heard that it basicly says that it's 2 people that are about to have their first relation... ya know but just aren't ready... that's the ony thing that made sense. and I just LOOOVE the screaming part!!!:D it's sooo intense!

11- Bang The Doldrums: aawww I find this song sooo cute love the '' I Cast A Spell Over The West To Make You Think Of Me The Same Way I Think Of You.'' I don't know who he loves but I don't know why the hell it dosen't work cause he's just sooo special... anyway great great great song!!!!!

12-Fame infamy: theres just so much to say about this song.. but writting when its 2:00 am is not a good idea... but if you read the lyrics it really tell what he's going throught in his life!

13-You're Crashing But You're No Wave: This song made me fell bad for all of those person that are in prison that made an error but just can't get out of it know.... they won't ever get out... their lifes are ruined! and he just explained that well in those lyrics!

14- I've Got All This Ringing In My Ears And None On My Fingers: Aww just love that one!!!! all the lyrics are awesome... it's so perfect! very cool ending for a cd!

and finishing of with 'Now Press Repeat ''

here's what I got from a site

'' it's a song dedicated to emo scene kids hence "now press repeat"
it sells, they make money, emo kids are...well...satisfied. & FOB take the piss by sayin "now press repeat" - coz they probably were gonna do that anyway.... ''

I just said what the songs means to me basicly... but they all mean more then anyone think... check out www.songmeaning.net they say pretty good stuff there!

ok so on Pete now...

He's my hero... everything he creates, everything he has gone through (and still here) ect... I admire him so much... he kept me going in life when I was about to fall... I even painted my room all in black and wrote in white paint lyrics and song titles on my wall.

here's some pics

so that's how much I love this band!!!! it's my life and even if they change... it's thei music and I'll follow them whenever they go! of course I like their other albums but I felt that it was more important to take about the latest one cuz a lot is criticing it! :(:(

anyway thats it I hope your opinion changed about the band and Pete :)

I very much doubt Pete wants to be in a relationship that lasts more than a late night. Writing a love song and meaning it are two very different things.
All this entire CD shows is how dominating he is, even though, aside from mediocre one liners, he contributes little to nothing to the band. Pete is NOT the artistic force behind FOB. It was Pete's idea to take the band in a pop'ier direction with the new CD, and this decision turned away so many of FOB's older fans. Pete can't sing, he can't write music, he can barely play his bass (probably the easier instrument of all time to learn), and he can only come up with recycled versions of his own cliches for lyrics. So tell me again why he's in the spotlight as the headliner of the band, or why he can't shut up on stage and let even one of the other members squeeze in a word? Because he's full of himself, more full of himself than perhaps any other artist that's out there right now.
So no, I haven't changed my opinion about Pete.

Okay first you don't know him... and ya I don't know him too... but I think we have to stop thinking that just because he's in the spolight dosen't mean he's just a jerk or think this about like any super star here... he's like us and has feelings and like almost everybody, he wants to be in a relationship... I mean why would he write those lyrics and don't mean it? It's just not a song out of no where... unless you find me an interview about HIM in video that tells that this song is inspired from a movie or whatever....

second How do you know that he isn't good with his Bass? A video?? a text on the internet by other mean people? I mean for exemple 'Dance, Dance' We hear perfectly the Bass and it's pretty good! Without a Bass FOB would be nothing ... without a Drumer they would be nothing... without the guitare it would be nothing... whitout the lead singer even worst...
Cuz ya FOB wouldn't last long if Patrick was not there... Pete has a pretty face but not exactly a pretty voice so it won't save his band or make it on the top again if Patrick is not there... so it's NOT all about HIM!

They are different then the other bands... usually the lead singer is the popular.... well they choose to do it the other way... I like it that way cuz Pete is the writer in this band and its his creation... he deserve his spolight for that... but all of the rest of the band has theirs ...

okay for the Pop thing... Ya and? it's their band and if they want to make it more pop ... (it's more Rock than pop to me but anyway)... it's their choices.... if the rest of the band wouldn't agree with that.... they would of simply go and quit. I like both their past albums and this one.. they are very unique! They maybe lost fans for this... but they abviously were not listening to the band for the right reasons... but anyway people change it's normal and if they are happy to make those kind of song let it be! just because we don't like it dosen't mean they have to change them selves to be what we want them to be... I hate that and I respect them for any changes they are making... it's their dreams and they are the lucky ones who made it! and I'm super happy for them.... it's funny how when people get too famous theres more people who'll hate for nothing.. cuz I don't see possible reasons why to not like Pete? I mean WHY would he not deserve this.... everybody wants to be famous and say or sing their mind off... but why HIM can't have that? we don't know whats going on out there and it must be pretty hard for all of the artists I'm sure.

Okay what I hate the most is people loving just Pete cuz hes hot... I can't lie I'm totally obsessed with him LOLL but of course when I first listen their songs I think it was Dance Dance I looooved the lyrics looooved the voice! I didn't know there was a Pete Wentz in this band.. so I diged up their other songs and was totally in love... and thats when I found out of the whole band and fell in love with pete... I watched almost every youtube video about him when he was in it and what he says it's really amazing and he's a really good guy and so kind and full of imagination.... and have his moment of... well stupidity:rotfl: he's normal what can I say:p

well see, it was the opposite for me. i heard Sugar We're Going down and Dance Dance on the same day, and i thought the songs were great. when i got more into the band, however, and looked up the members, even, i still had no problem with Pete... i just didn't know that he was the "headliner." i even saw a few music videos and saw that Pete was the biggest part of most of them, but i just figured that that's normal. a lot of bands choose their less-popular members to be the main focii of their videos.
but then i saw them live. Patrick, who tried to speak at first, was constantly cut off by Pete, until Pete took over the entire show. the other members didn't say a word. at this point i still had no idea that it was Patrick who the song. so basically it was Pete blabbering about random stuff, and Patrick doing all the singing. i tell you now, when they break up, it will be a conflict between Pete and Patrick.
the thing is, though, you can't call Pete the "writer" for the band because, well, he doesn't write their music. he writes lyrics, and most definitely not ALL of the lyrics. and when i say lyrics, i means just the words, not the vocal melodies. now that's the facts, moving on to my opinions. i don't think Pete's lyrics are great. they are decent for a pop-punk band, i suppose. with the exception of a few excellent songs (most notably I've Got A Dark Valley), the majority of his lyrics are repetative, cliche, one liners. and, for the record, that's not a bad thing, i don't listen to Fall Out Boy for artistic or lyrical inspiration. they are just a fun band with catchy songs that i can put on during a party and most people will recognize. my only point is that he's not an incredible lyricist, he's simply... okay.
and i know that he can't play the bass well because i play the bass and i can play his parts in my sleep. he's got no excuse whatsoever for messing up constantly live.

having said all these bad things about Pete, the only thing i have to say about Patrick is that he oughta lay off the doughnuts

My boyfriend explained something similar to me the other day. His words were, "Pete plays bass. Bass! Fall Out Boy could kick him out and they'd probably sound exactly the same. But if they kicked him out, people wouldn't listen to them anymore. It's because all the girls are in love with Pete and not the band it's self."

And about reusing the same lyrics, I hear you there. All I hear is Bridges, Bridges, Bridges, Ships, Ships, Ships, Car Crash, Car Crash. It's like a friggin broken record.

One thing they do got though is the fact that they sound awsome live. When I saw them a couple months back they rocked the hell out of the place. But then again some of the other bands I saw there were just as good and some, even better.

These guys are in town next month, maybe I'll go see 'em.
(It's at a large venue though - 20K seats.)

I saw them live in October. Pete was definitely the more dominative one on stage. I can't remember Patrick hardly saying more than 4 words. (besides his singing).

But yeah Infinity on High wasn't my favorite of their albums, but really wasn't horrible. My favorite track was 'Hum Hallelujah" or 'Thanks for the Memories'. This CD definitely sounds more poppy than their others.

My sister is a huge FOB fan, she has let me listen to the cds she has, and they are pretty cool. My favorite song - no matter how emo she tells me it is - is "Golden"; I really like their radio releases, but whenever I want to be by myself or just think, I listen to that song. I love it!

---P.S. Speaking of covers, I heard an FOB cover of MJ's "Beat It"- I liked it.

Fall out boy are playing a show in Antarctica soon to be the only band to play a show on all seven continents. Personally I think it's a lame idea, just another way pete wentz is trying to grab some attention.
