I would have thought he would have joined Lex and Lana's party.

I thought it was EXTREMELY bizarre that Lionel wasn't at HIS SON'S ENGAGEMENT PARTY. Imagine how even more awesome it would have been if he was there when Clark said all that stuff about Martha!!!

He was also very strangely absent from last weeks episode? Do you think the writers are planning something for him? Or will they just explain it away saying he was out of town on a business trip?

I was very surprised and disappointed he was a no show.
He was too busy crying that he didn't get an invitation to the engagement party.
Naw, I'm totally kidding, but it definitely is a theory. ;)
I kind of hoped he would be there, too, especially since Clark pretty much hinted that Martha's been spending a lot of time with him and such at the party.

Lex invite Lionel to his engagement party? I'm surprised that people are surprised! They've never been that close. Did we even see Lionel at Lex's wedding with Desirée, in Heat?

Yeah, but if you look at his choices for best man, Lionel would probably be the winner now. Or maybe Lucas, though, I don't think he would want a psychopath who would make the wedding guests play a game with guns loaded with blanks.

Last week he wasn't there. This week he wasn't there. I mean, why did Martha go to the dinner when Lionel wasn't there? It didn't make much sense to me.

Yeah I was like "Where's Lionel?" I mean you would think he would be invited, at least Martha would have taken him. THat scene would just have been much more interesting!

Very weird not to have your father at your engagement dinner.. even with their strange relationship. Probably just a case of nothing else in the episode written for him so why bring him in for one scene.

Well, hopefully he will be in the next episode cuz it seems like it will be centered around the mansion.

maybe he had business, or was in the bathroom and just magically went blind again so he couldn't find his zipper when all the commotion happened. Or the bathroom was really far from where they were.

I think TPTB our like us. They have no clue either and keeping him off screen solves a lot of the problem.

There will probably be an excuse he was out on business when really hes checking for JLA attacks on the 33.1 facilities or something. Or maybe since he can write kryptonian he oculd be doing more research. :D
Those are my theories though yeah they're wrong

I wish lionel would have been at the party when clark said something about jonathon only being dead for a year and I bet lionel would have tried to do what lex did and get clark to stop talking and I bet clark would have said somethin to him to make him look like stupid lol

A more practical reason for his absence is he's been doing other work. He's appeared on an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Numbers. The Law & Order episode ran the same week as "Crimson." Granted, they were filmed months in advance. But that's probably why he wasn't there.

lionel is probably trying to figure out why the writers made him write power in zod and than didnt bother explaining what it meant

I agree, rather odd for the father of the groom to not be present.

I thought it was werid he wasn't there... though maybe they're working up to killing him off later in the season.
Hopefully he'll be there for the actual wedding if indeed there is one.

it's one big weird family!:) but maybe Lionel is planning to do something against Lex or doesn't approve Lex's marrige with Lana and that is why he's not showing up

I wasn't surprised at all that Lionel wasn't there. Lex and Lionel have anything but a friendly relationship. I remember Lionel telling Lex that he wasn't holding his breath for an invite to the Lex-Hellen wedding, and he didn't get one. I think the same thing is applying here, Lex only associates with Lionel on buisness and in regards to 33.1, not for any personal reasons. For Lex, his father is already dead.

Actually it is not all that difficult to understand why Lionel was not present. Him and Lex have not made up. They are only working together becaquse of Lionel's blackmail of Lex about 33.1. They have mutual understanding. The announcement party was for close personal friends of the two. If Lionel would have been there at the request of Lex then it would cast suspicion as to why Lex, who everyone knows hates his father, would have him there. Now if Martha had invited him which she could have it might have taken the focus away from Red K's entrance at the behest of Lois. I think one party crasher was enough for this episode.
