View Full Version : Clark & Lois at The Daily Planet

So, contrary to the oh-so-sure naysayers (http://www.kryptonsite.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=2776135#post2776135), Clark and Lois were at the Daily Planet in those screenshots that people believed to be Ollie's "bedroom". Pfft. I know the Smallville people are stupid sometimes, but I can hardly believe that they'd screw up that much.
What's even greater? They were kissing in a phone booth and then the camera moved outside to have the large Daily Planet logo in clear view.
And how can I forget the rooftop? Standing on top of the Daily Planet logo right next to that famous globe, Clark Kent and the real Lois Lane sailed through the air over the iconic city of Metropolis.
Hey, even Chloe dropped an anvil!

Regarding this topic, the first thing that I want to do is give a shout out to Sunflowercyn who examined the trailers and came to the conclusion that Clark and Lois were going to kiss at the DP. Everybody disagreed with her, me included, but sunflower, kudos to you! That's a job well done.
As for the scene, what can I say as a Clois fan. TPTB came through for me by having their first kiss be at the DP. That was an excellent touch. This was an awesome Clois episode.

I remember that, and I supported sunflower. And I just have to quote khufu from a few days ago:

So... we have never seen Oliver's bedroom, right? And in the scene where they are kissing, there is a bright white light (http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/4462/uvs070128003rw6.png) coming from a window behind Clark, right? Well, the DP does not have ANY bright white windows - it's the basement and the only windows are stained glass. But we have seen one place that has the exact same decorated wooden borders (http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/4701/uvs070128002do8.png) and a bright window... Linda Lake's office (http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/4187/uvs070128001ah3.png). :\ Sorry to crush your hopes, but they are reusing Linda's office set as Oliver's bedroom - they are not at the Daily Planet. Like I said, that's Chloe's set :p
Hmm. So, are you still laughing your ass off? :)

Or maybe about how in Labryinth, Clark was going to kiss Chloe. Or perhaps how it was the raging jealousy of Clark to Chloe about being with Jimmy.
Hmmmm.

There was absolutely no Clark jealousy in that scene where he went off on Chloe. He was going off on everyone for simply being at the party having a good time. Back on topic, to top off the DP kiss, that superjump was the ####. Awesome stuff.

Blech. This stepping back to season 1 for characters with the Clana and the Chloe pining, is just inane.
ETA: To keep it on topic, all the stuff at the DP rocked.
And man oh MAN! what a lot of anvils. Great stuff for Clois fans....well for awhile. But that's to be expected, right?

I know people have a tendency to see Chlois/Chlark anvils even when Chloe breathes, but there was next to none of it in this episode.
I forgot to mention that even the woman who sold Lois the lipstick (who says she has a "sixth sense") said that she believes Clark and Lois' destinies are more intertwined than we think. :)

As long as Chloe is breathing, the optimism is alive :D But that's just the thing, I also don't want her to be killed off.
Anyway I forgot about that gypsy line too. Another great foreshadowing.

Go Routh!! I have to say I was laughing my ass off when I watched the episode... whether the 'naysayers' were or not. (More than likely, they were wiping their tears.)
That was an AWESOME Clois episode. Totally lived up to the hype. There is no way TPTB could have been any clearer that they're fully aware that -- no matter what happens in the present -- Lois is Clark's future and the love of his life.

Dueling anvils?? :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
There were no anvils for Chlark. It was all about Jimmy being angry at Chloe for choosing Clark over him and Chloe telling Jimmy over and over again that she loved him, not Clark. And Clark was taunting Chloe in a sleazy way at the party -- not coming on to her. In fact, the only person he's remotely nice to is Lois at the party. All he says to her is that "this is the present" when she says she's his future. And, guess what? She IS his future and he was right -- this his present. Both of them were right when you look at the Superman mythos in relation to "SV". And it's interesting that even RED-K Clark didn't deny that she's his future or that she could be. He could have been mean to her, but he's not. Can't get more of an anvil than that.
And what is his description of Chloe at the end to his mom? "So I want to kiss Lois, keep Chloe in my back pocket, all while I love Lana?" *ahem* Keep Chloe in his back pocket... interesting choice of words. Oh yeah, Chlark's alive. I'm sure Chloe was secretly pining for Clark while she was holding back her tears because Jimmy took a break from her. I'm sure she didn't love Jimmy at all & that Clark was secretly wanting to be with Chloe the whole while he was making out with Lois & kidnapping Lana. She was the one on his brain, I'm sure. :rotfl: :rotfl:

He didn't even negate her when she said "I'm your future". That's very outstanding.
I've watched enough RedK episodes to know that Kal being Kal, he'd immediately take the bait and taunt her with something like "Don't flatter yourself" or "How presumptuous of you".
But he simply stated the obvious: "This is the present".

Word. No matter how much some people detest her character and we're still trapped in the Clexana web yet, TPTB is sending the message across loud and clear: ED's character is indeed the real deal, and she is indeed having the future as Lois Lane that we know from the mythos.

I don't even feel like arguing against the Chlois theory anymore. Stick a fork in it. It's done. Over. Dead. IMO, it never had any credence.
There are no dueling anvils, because "Chlois" anvils can't be considered anvils if it never comes to fruition. TPTB are outright saying that Lois Lane is Lois Lane, the woman destined to be with Clark, and Chloe will always just be a friend.
So what do I use when I want to argue to Chlois theory from now on? Two words.
Crimson. Destiny.

And if the Chlois keep trying to preach their stuff, I will refer them to Crimson over and over and over again. Did you not see the promo poster? The legendary love affair begins tonight." Cool, lois' first ingress into an office at the Daily Planet was when she was about to nailed on a desktop in an empty office.
Don't think the other real Loises earned their stripes laying on their back on the top of the desk. In this case, it didn't quite happen for this version of lois either, even with an aphrodisiac and RedK to help her attract Clark temporarily.
The natural chemistry and pheronomes just isn't working with these two. He left her high and drive like Oliver did. Poor thing.

Excellent post Routh! And kudos to those that guessed right. I loved all the significant touches you pointed out in this episode. I also loved how Martha was there for both the Lois/Clark scenes at the house. Reminds me of the Lois and Clark eps like The Green Glow of Home where Clark's parents see Clois coming before Clark does. Martha's got her eye on them, and senses that she's seeing the beginning of something extraordinary, so she's pushing Clark to move on. :D

The scene in the phone booth was terrific. Just them being together on the roof of the Daily Planet was enough for me. ;) This ep had so many great things about it. Is it just me or did they write redkClark to be a bit softer towards Lois? I just don't remember seeing anything other than being an a@@ in the redk eps before. It felt different, at least part of the time.

I thought so too. That's what I've been saying since the trailers and the DC came out. Usually he just gave me the impression of an agressive horny teenager who wanted to get laid as soon as possible.

It was a tough fight :) The arguement that the TPTB were recycling a set and not changing any of the ART DECO/Mayan stuff to use as Ollie's bedroom when we can clearly see that Ollie loved "modern age" furniture and didn't jive at all. Not to mention this former Vancouver girl knows her favourite building that inspired the set designers. Nice try :p
I guess "he"really loved the part where Lois drags Clark into the Phone booth and kisses him there and transforms Clark into REDK Clark aka Lois's newfound superman and then they superjump off the roof of the Daily Planet.

Now this is the way it should be. Finnaly got some ppl backpedeling and ducking. But thats EXACTLY what the writers want. Keeps us in tune with the show for the long haul. Now the DP scenes were great! And I may have missed sunflower's findings of them at the DP and all the debate, but to be told that ur wrong to find out ur right is a great feeling aint it? That balcony scene screamed SM 1 and SR's. Clark (mind u still in the SV version of the SM suit. And to me that alone says a lot) up on the ledge looking down to Lois. And the SV version of the Lois SM music was awesome.

eas had summed it up perfectly on why TPTB had put so many anvils regarding Clois in Crimson:
"Look, yes, we are focused on Clana right now. Hell, we might even throw in some Chlark here and there to mess with your mind. But, trust us, we KNOW he ends up with Lois Lane. We know that Lois and Clark are destined to be together. We may not go there often, but we KNOW. Now shut up and watch the Clana for the rest of season. It's not time for Clois, yet, but it is end game."

They already started the ship since Crusade. Heck, it's already started 70 years ago. As for substance, you're forgetting the loft scene. And notice the difference of RedK Clark this time, he's softer around Lois compared to how he treated other girls.

We know that Lois and Clark are destined to be together. We may not go there often, but we KNOW. Now shut up and watch the Clana for the rest of season. It's not time for Clois, yet, but it is end game."

I noticed that too, like when he came up from behind to cuddle her to nuzzle her neck. Or how he lifted her onto the ledge. That lift was reminiscent of the way Kal-El lifted her in Crusade when she stood between him and the door. I also think it helps that Lois isn't a shrinking violet. They look great together. :D

Not to mention this former Vancouver girl knows her favourite building that inspired the set designers. Nice try :p
As soon as Lois showed up at the DP, I knew that scene was going to be in Lake's office but I was thinking, I don't want their first kiss to be in a random office, I want it to be somewhere near the DP logo and sure enough, it was not only next to the DP logo, but it was in a phone booth! That was a great touch by TPTB there.

That is one of my favourite scenes. Clark goes from sexy guy on the prowl to holding her from behind 'cause she is troubled by her decisions about men in the past.
Lifting her on the ledge!!!!! Wow!!!
I luv how Erica is tall so when she does these scenes with Tom they look great together!
myankskent...yeah TPTB really didn't let us down with all the DP stuff. Leave it to Lois to be like a "pitbull on a pant leg" and lasso Clark into a phonebooth and show him there are more things to do in there then use the phone.

Yup, that was awesome and I'll tell you what I liked most about the Clark/Lois scenes this episode. In every scene except for the party crashing scene, he was wearing his red jacket, not his black one. IMO, the fact that he was wearing red alone made Clark seem much "softer" than his usual redK look in black. It really helped to make Clark appear to be less "evil" in those scenes and more comforting toward Lois. It was just a nice touch by TPTB.

Hey!!!!!! That's right! RED AND BLUE!! So many people thought the minute REDK zaps him he'd lose the farmboy outfit and go shopping for leather.
But no. Instead he was more interested in being with Lois and trying to impress her. Clark on REDK was mostly pretty good with Lois. You know...not mean and vindictive but fun and sexy but still dealing with his self-consciousness of how he thinks Lois perceives him.

And remember, ClarkMan (undrugged) decided not to keep the symbol of lois' luv, her White Snake Mix, when they shared that (ho ho, he was laughing at her internally) moment in the Barn. Gave her the CD 'cause he didn't want or need her luv. (Think of Jimmy if he gave his bow-tie back to Chloe).
lois' token has no meaning to Clark, nor her tattoo, nor her temporary phase of being nice, if overly easy. (sounds like an egg)

Wow! IMO Clark was reverting to his "comfort zone" when dealing with Lois Lane. Tease her and try to get the upper hand and it began with the comment with the tatoo. Since he was the only one that "knows" what happened he was having fun seeing her squirm at the thought of what they may have done. The return of the CD was more chance to "get" Lois so to speak.
It wasn't here have your crappy CD back I don't want your declaration of love. Clark is not mean like that (only when he's on REDK ).
If Clark had absolutely no attraction to her he would have used his super strength to keep Lois away from him at the Kent farm and in the phone booth no matter how much she is coming on to him. This is his friend for crying out loud. That's what friends do when their good friend is not herself. Instead he makes like the roadrunner and then doesn't fight her off in the phone booth.

Clark running away like the roadrunner and not fighting her off in the phone booth was VERY telling (not to mention LOL funny).
He could have knocked her unconsious with one tap of his finger (like he did in Hypnotic) at any time if he really wanted her to stop. ;)
Something that Clark in the comics says about Lois during a story when he's lost his memory or something (my recollection is sort of foggy about all of the circomstances) and he meets Lois who trying to get him to remember who he is is that Lois both frightens and excites him. And I think we saw that in those two scenes expecially. :)

Well, remember that Red K, as Martha herself said, doesn't change Clark, it just makes him lower his guard and be himself more openly. Pretty much all he said and did in this episode pointed to his real motivations, even going as far as busting on Martha for seemingly being interested in Lionel.
It's been obvious, especially including his reaction and look after Lois kissed him when he was wearing the GA outfit, that he felt -something- for Lois. And remember Oliver's words when he saw Lois and Clark together, about them disguising their feelings with sarcasm and pinging each other? heh.. Neither one of them said much to that, and Lois biting her lip when he gave her the CD back seemed to further compound (if any was needed) that somewhere they recognize what's there, just don't want to really admit to it.

yeah...why was he so eager to make himself be seen as more then a dorky farmboy when Lois was sincerely saying she didn't care and found it attractive?
He was very jealous of Oliver and didn't want to be seen as "normal" in her eyes 'cause he's more then that.

I agree, I like how they've laid the groundwork for their feelings and they are building on it. Before, Lois and Clark could just brush it off but now they are aware of those feelings. Those feelings have been voiced for the first time by Lois and Clark themselves rather than a third party. "I must have really liked you", "I want to kiss Lois". And it's interesting that it's mutual, you can see their story arcs running along right beside each other. And you can see why they end up together. Right time, right place, right people. They aren't going to leap into Clois but they are steadily moving them forward. Hopefully we will get many more scenes of Clark being flustered around Lois.

Clark never reached for the CD saying he was giving her the CD back. Lois asked for the details of what happened and Clark reached for the CD saying he remembered something. What he did was rather sweet because he gave her back a bit of her memory which was what she wanted. And in turn Lois shared something personal with him with her usage of Whitesnake. A very heartfelt exchange of gifts here.

Mercy, mercy me. Lois and Clark at the Daily Planet were freaking hot! :D
While I was watching this scene (for the umpteenth time :p ) Lois's tattoo reveal kind of reminded me of Superman's classic "shirt rip" to reveal the "S" shield on his chest. I think it's a neat correlation.
Anyways...the way she pulled her shirt to the side to reveal the strategically placed heart tattoo was hilarious!

Great visual comparison. They could have done the superjump from any other building or other location, but they specifically chose the DP and the Metropolis skyline, and at night too.
I also love how Lois didn't go all gaga and fell on his feet and lavished him with praises even after he had took her soaring in the air. She simply described it as "leaping buildings in a single bound". I think it's a very significant hint that Lois would definitely love and accept him as a whole and every side of him, dorky farmboy, Boy Scout and a superpowered alien from another planet.
Other things I've noticed how their body movements were all so perfectly in sync in mirroring each other during the V-day lovefest scene, after Chloe pulled Jimmy away to discuss the "Lois... and Clark".
Also it's funny how his whole life he wants to be seen as normal by other people, but when Lois herself said to him she's happy that she has found a normal guy, he snapped "What do you mean, normal?" I swear, this guy is the perfect example of self-contradiction.

Yes, I agree. I loved how Crimson showed how Lois can love all aspects of Clark Kent. As much as Lois teases Clark for being a simple farmboy, the red K lipstick of love revealed that deep, deep down, she just adores that side of Clark. You just know that she totally digs how he drives a tractor. And you know she admires those big, strong farmboy arms of his. :D
And thanks for the link to the iconic moments comparisons, Routh. The visuals are lovely. Got my vote on the huge freakin anvil seacrystal. I'm the first one to admit that Clark is still hung up on Lana Lang and he obviously needs to work through that before SV could REALLY ever have him start to recognize feelings for Lois Lane.
The look on Lois's face when he says "this is the present" and yet he doesn't dismiss what Lois says at all. Clark on REDK wouldn't hesitate to do that as we have seen in the past.
This is not over by a long shot. Clark remembers everything and something tells me that everything that happened in CRIMSON will have long lasting effects. Even what happened with Lois Lane.

hey that's pretty cool Routh, thanks! There is alot of stuff in that scene that's similar to the other Clois flights. One of my favorite parts was Lois on the edge of the DP roof, she does a double take peering down at the city from such great heights. There's a similar scene to that one in both STM and SR.

You know something I did not think about (and may have already been pointed out on this thread) and I got this from someone else: Clark's inhibitions are lowered on Red K and he still did not tell Lana his secret (even though the signs are showing she will find out this season) he took Lois up in flight thus not hiding his secret from Lois (and she forgets most of it anyway but that is certainly something else Clark should chew on).

It was stated in the show, more than once, and in this episode yet again by Martha, that red-k doesn't change doesn't change who Clark is, but strips away his inhibitions. So, what does that say about his relationships with the 4 women in his life (his mother, Chloe, Lois and Lana)?
1. He is angry and hurt because Martha chooses to be friends with Lionel. This we know since last season, and we were just reminded again this episode.
2. He keeps Chloe as a romantic possibility, never letting her truly go, because if no one else appears, he can always start a relationship with her. This was the worst revelation of the episode, to say the truth. Chloe has been a really good friend for him over the years and hearing him admitting it made me want to beat him. I really hope that, after that Chloe sincerelly moves on.
3. He is still in love/obsessed with Lana, or at least believes himself to be.
4. He wanted Lois to know the truth about Oliver, and that surprised me a little. I mean, at the begining, he insisted on Oliver about telling her the truth, but he still covered for him and in Hydro he actively helped him. I guess it only makes sense when we think on terms of Justice, when Clark tells Chloe he regretted helping Oliver to deceive her.
5. He also is strongly attracted by Lois. The PTB had hinted this sometimes in the show, but we never saw Clark admitting him. There were only two scenes this season that make that attraction clear to the adience: the kiss in hydro and Clark's face right after it, and the scene with lingerie in Justice. In Crimson the attraction is clear even before he is under the effect of redk when Lois goes all over Clark in the farm (his body language, his gigles, his smile and the way he holds her makes it clear). Then, under redk he is all over her and it is clear that he wants her. Afterwards, we learn Chloe clearly stating what we already know: the aphrodisiac doesn't affect Clark, what affected him was the redk. So, once again, Clark without inhibitions acting on what he wants.
6. We also learn that Clark is jealous of Oliver. The scene in the Daily Planet is clear about that. Gough once said that Clark was jealous, but untill that episode, this jealousy was so subtle that it wasn't clear to audience. But now, in that scene it was clear: the way he keeps saying that Oliver is not in his league and how he mocks Oliver's costume and his gadgets and even his show off to Lois at the roof and the fact that he chooses Oliver's appartment to make out with his previous girlfriend.
7. And, the most surprising revelation of the episode: Clark wants to be seen as more than a farmboy by Lois. He wants it so much, that in order to impress her, he reveals himself to her in a way he has only done to the people he trust and in a way that he never revealed himself to Lana, not even under redk.
Just a side note, in an episode full of anvils, had you got that the gipsy is called STAR? This was the name of Lois's psychic friend in the 3rd season of Lois and Clark.

Awesome post liana! And this anvil, is quite clever! I loved Star on LnC. Something else that was similar was Lois using music to express her feelings. Lois does the same in STM with her "Can You Read My Mind". This time Lois saved us and used a Whitesnake mixtape instead. Both equally cheesy but sweet. :D

^^ Great post liana. I think your points pretty much summed up the whole episode.
^^^ Excellent post, Liana. I agree with you 100% on all counts. The fact that Clark wanted to reveal his secret to Lois almost immediately leapt out at me, as well. It was impossible to miss. In the same episode, he could have easily told Lana everything in the loft, but something held him back. Pretty interesting considering that he's still in love with her -- but, yet, still can't trust now anymore than he has for years. On the other hand, Lois (who he has only known for a few years and isn't in love with, yet) is someone he feels compelled to tell all his secrets & even wants to show off about it and have her be impressed. That was the part that really stood out for me in this episode.

Liana is completely dead on with her analysis of this episode. She summed up everything I have been thinking in her post.
I actually didn't notice the psychic reference to Star from Lois and Clark! That is great that you picked up on that!
This was a great episode for learning exactly how Clark really feels about everything that's going on around him.

Great episode, hopefully the show will keep this upward spiral and not suddenly crap out--like the next episode seems like it will do....
yeah I hope they keep the momentum going.

I also think it was important for Clark to hear that she loves the farmboy side of him.
he needs to know she would love the man not the costume!

I like that part alot too. Lois Lane in the end will love Clark Kent no matter what. Farm boy, reporter with clutz issues....or in super hero costume. She doesn't need to be impressed but Clark seems to think he needs to impress her. Hmm.....
